Gas South stepping up
to support Metro Atlanta families after inclement weather.
We're speaking of Hurricane Isaias forced
the closure of many local food pantries.
So our Caitlin Pratt joins us live now
with more on what families can expect today.
Caitlin, they are hoping to feed more than 250 families,
which is some good news here.
Some great news.
Good morning to you, Jasmine.
Yeah, I'm here.
This event is about to begin
in about less than 10 minutes time here at Chapel Hill.
Church in Atlanta. I want to switch the camera
so you can see exactly what the volunteers have prepped for here.
All right, we're entering the auditorium
and you can see just the expanse of
tables set up. More than 250 families expected here. Carts ready to go.
These families will be able to go station to station and gather
groceries for their families.
A helping hand, right? So you mentioned Gas South.
They're teaming up with the Atlanta Community Food Bank,
providing all these groceries and household essentials to neighbors,
our neighbors, in need.
It's a pop-up grocery store opening at 11 this morning.
It goes to 1 o'clock this afternoon, and it gives the chance to shop
for items they need most, some nutritious, good food, vegetables.
Organizers have prepared all these supplies,
including 10,000 pounds of fresh produce,
things like we're seeing right here,
$20,000 worth of supplemental groceries.
And the goal in all of this is to give families
a grocery-style experience, right, allowing
shoppers to choose fresh food, healthy food,
household essentials for themselves.
And the Atlanta Community Food Bank
also partnering on this effort as well,
helping to connect families with the food
and with the resources when they need them most.
Now, organizers say community donations also help them get the job done
and help our neighbors in need.
The church here, they do a drive-through food pantry twice a month.
This, though, is significantly different
because it is sponsored by Gas South
and in partnership also with the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
So they're expecting 250-plus families.
You did preregister a lot of families,
but they're expecting walk-ups too.
So if you're watching this, you're streaming with us,
yes, you can still come here
and load up your cart with these fresh foods and groceries.
I'm going to catch up with the pastor,
and we're going to play what he has to say about
this amazing effort in the next hour here.
on Fox Local. In the meantime, I'm
going to send it back to you, Jasmine.
Wonderful. Thanks for showing us this.
We'll let you check in with the pastor, guys. I love to see
the fresh produce being offered to families across the area.
And you can still attend this event,
even though it was pre-registered.
You had to pre-register, pre-register, that is, to get
involved. So glad to know that you can still walk up
and be a part of this event.
