We are following breaking news this morning in Plano where
a late-night apartment fire sent one man to the hospital.
Police believe that fire was intentionally set
and they have a person of interest in custody.
Fox 4's Dan Godwin live to explain what happened. Dan?
Well, Shannon, the flames are out, but moments ago,
firefighters started dumping a lot of water
on one section of the roof of this apartment building.
Presumably, they spotted a hot spot there.
The call to the Plano Fire Department came in right around midnight.
Officials say this fire has caused extensive damage
to one building at this sprawling apartment complex.
We do have some drone video sent in by Yaman Maida.
This gives us an aerial view of the firefighting effort.
Before the flames were extinguished,
at one point a roof collapsed onto firefighters.
Fortunately, none of them were hurt.
A spokesperson for the department says
the cause of this fire believed to be arson.
Police have detained one person described as a person
of interest in connection with the arson investigation.
The apartment building that burned has 10 units,
all of them said to be uninhabitable, at least for now.
There's no word yet exactly how many people were displaced.
another person had to be rescued off
a second story balcony we spoke to someone living on the
first floor who watched that scenario as it
was happening as i was jumping they had to
get the ladder um it was an older man up older man on top of me
and he's like help help and uh
so he he they got the ladder
and thank god for these uh these uh guys these firefighters out
here the person who was rescued was transported to the hospital
but their injuries are
apparently minor. We're not getting any details yet as to why police
and fire officials believe
this fire was deliberately set.
We expect to get more information to come out later today.
Management at this complex along
with the Red Cross are helping displaced residents
find temporary housing.
