News at 11. Another monument vandalized.
This time the Iwo Jima statue, what police say they
discovered in the suspect's hand when they responded.
Plus, one of Virginia's most powerful
Democrats indicted. The major accusations,
the latest reactions, and what's next in the federal
case out of the Commonwealth.
An outrage at a local high school after a student is robbed at
knife point inside a bathroom.
How parents are reacting tonight. Fox 5 News at 11 starts now.
Breaking news right now at 11 out of Arlington.
Shots fired on the same block where a man was shot last night.
This is a live look at tonight's scene
on the 2400 block of South Lowell Street.
Police were called out around 9.30 p.m. after neighbors heard gunfire.
So far, no injuries reported,
but there is damage to several cars and a home.
Detectives are trying to determine if this is related
to last night's shooting that injured a man.
That victim is in stable condition.
Stay with Fox 5 for the latest.
New details in a sledgehammer attack
on a prominent monument outside Marine Corps Base Quantico.
A man in custody tonight accused of vandalizing the Iwo Jima statue
last night, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages.
Fox 5's Joshua Zinthal is in Quantico with the latest.
This statue is meant to honor Marines
who've given their lives to this country.
But now, take a look.
A soldier missing his head.
And there's damage on the other side of the statue as well.
It's a terrible thing.
You know, this is a hugely important statue to our service members,
to our veterans, particularly to our Marines.
According to Prince William County Police,
this man, Miguel Soriano, is responsible.
They tell us officers responded here to the intersection of Richmond
Highway and Fuller Road a little after 10 p.m. Wednesday night.
We're told the officers found Soriano on top of the statue,
sledgehammer in hand.
He's accused of knocking the head off one of the soldiers.
There are gouge marks elsewhere on the statue.
And police said another one of the soldiers
is missing the bayonet from his gun.
They say at this point they aren't sure why Soriano did this
and that he's given them multiple contradictory statements.
Damage is estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I want you to hear from two people we met out at the statue Thursday.
One says her dad fought in the Army in World War II
and her husband served in the Marines.
The other, who you'll hear from first, is the art curator
of the National Museum of the Marine Corps, which is just up the road.
It's really devastating. I don't know what else to say.
I mean, our responsibility is to try
to preserve the history of the Marine Corps.
And you see something like this, and it's just a blow to your gut.
This is un-American. To me, this is terrorism.
It's like they blew up something on the base.
This is a slap against America.
Police say that the suspect, Soriano, is being held without bond.
Fox News reports that he's in the country illegally.
The Commonwealth reacting tonight
to the indictment of Virginia State Senator
Louise Lucas, a longtime and powerful Democratic lawmaker
accused of helping operate a multimillion-dollar criminal enterprise.
Today, the Justice Department unveiled that indictment,
accusing her of drug trafficking, money laundering, and wire fraud.
The indictment also accuses family members
that involved FBI raids at cannabis businesses connected to Lucas.
In May, the feds executed search warrants and court-ordered wiretaps.
During her time as Virginia State Senator,
instead of enforcing the law, she was actually breaking the law,
as alleged in the indictment,
and then using her position of power and public trust to deflect
and defend against her own criminal enterprise.
Truly the epitome of hypocrisy for a public official.
Lucas denies any wrongdoing.
The vocal Trump critic released a statement saying,
I grew up under Jim Crow.
I've seen what happens when people in power
try to silence those who stand up to them.
I spent my life fighting back, and I'm not stopping now.
The state Senate majority leader questioned
the timing of the indictment.
I think a lot of people have questions about the Trump administration.
They indict people for throwing sandwiches at people
and for picking paint chips off the floor of the reflecting pool,
but they pardon people that assault federal law enforcement officers
with hockey sticks and flagpoles and bear spray.
So, you know, this office just doesn't seem to be a credible office.
The 82-year-old state senator will remain free.
Arraignment is scheduled for November 16th in Newport News.
Lucas is expected to formally enter a plea.
A retrial possible for D.C. Councilman Trayon White.
The U.S. attorney for the district, Janine Pirro,
says prosecutors will try to make
a bribery case again after a mistrial last month.
Pirro says the government has video showing cash being handed
to White as part of a $156,000 bribery scheme.
White, who has repeatedly denied wrongdoing,
has asked the judge to toss the case.
Let's turn our attention to the weather here at 11.
A live look now at National Harbor from our Fox 5 Sky Cam.
Sounds like a broken record.
Another picture-perfect fall day,
but a bit of a cool down is on the way.
Did that rhyme, Mike Thomas? It felt like it did.
Yes, it did, Kenneth.
Yes, it did, Kenneth. Yes, it did.
You know what I mean? Because I'm a broken record.
Yeah, but we get to hear your voice, so it's okay.
Right, that works.
We're doing those cheesy jokes.
That's how quiet the weather is across the D.C. region here.
Yeah, look, it has been a week of just perfect fall weather.
Cool mornings, nice, pleasant afternoons, and just ample sunshine.
I've barely seen a cloud go by all week long,
and that's probably going
to continue right through the upcoming weekend.
That is how kind of intense this area
of high pressure is that's come down from Canada.
Under high pressure, you get sinking air that prevents cloud cover,
and that's what we're seeing across not just the D.C. area,
much of the northeast,
much of the Midwest, the Great Lakes region,
all dealing with what we're dealing with.
70 degrees, 45-degree low temperature this morning,
so sweater weather to start.
Nice, pleasant finish this afternoon.
The big difference over the next couple of days,
slightly cooler temperatures,
some colder nights ahead
but as mentioned just a moment ago that sunshine expected to continue
live look outside at the National Harbor camera they're
not far from where that shot is being
taken Reagan National Airport sits where
the current temperature is 53, Dulles down in the 50
BWI, Joint Base Andrews 46
and already have a lot of suburbs down in those 40s tonight including
Beltsville down in the 43, Bowie 44, Germantown
at 46, West Springfield 45, La Plata still hanging on the
50 degrees, Colonial Beach 46, Montross 43, Leonardtown.
I think you actually came up one degree.
You were at 43 last hour.
You're up 44 right now.
As we take a look at overnight lows,
some of these I think are a little off.
You see, like, Leonardtown, 50.
Nope, they're already well down into the 40s.
I've got to drop that number.
40s and even upper 30s possible in the mountain zones out to the west.
Skies are clear.
Josephine basically gone.
Quiet conditions taking over ahead of your weekend.
So high pressure in control for tomorrow.
There's your planner.
Sunshine continues.
Have the sweaters handy, though.
You'll likely need them for, I'd say,
much of the day, with highs only in the lower 60s.
Kenneth?
All right, Mike, thank you.
See you in a bit.
New tonight, parents and students reacting to a knife point
robbery inside a high school bathroom in Prince George's County.
Fox 5's Shamari Stone is at Bowie High tonight
with the latest on the investigation.
Tonight, some students and parents tell me
that they are upset that this happened.
Other students saying that they're concerned about safety.
Tonight, one Bowie High School student
is in jail being charged as an adult.
Police tell me the two Bowie High School students walk up
to another student in a bathroom on campus around 12:30 this afternoon.
One of the two suspects allegedly pulls out a knife,
demands the teen's cell phone, and forces him to transfer money.
After the alleged robbery,
the student tells a school resource officer what happened,
and police arrest one student,
and the other has not been arrested as this investigation continues.
Officers removed both suspects from campus.
Tonight, we talked to a student with his father's permission,
and you'll also hear from a concerned mother
who does not want to be identified.
It's really unsettling, and it's unfortunate for the kid
who was a witness to that.
As a parent, how are you feeling tonight about this?
concerned concerned and prayerful for all of our
children yeah that's my my deepest like my honest
response right now um my heart is heavy tonight
the principal sending a letter home to parents
saying in part quote the safety
and well-being of our students remain our top priority no students
or staff were harmed in this incident we
are working closely with local law enforcement and
the PGCPS security services team to ensure a safe
and secure learning environment. Police have not
released the names of the two teenage suspects.
Meanwhile, detectives say that today's robbery
is not connected to a separate alleged robbery
that happened on October 8th near Bowie High
School. Both cases are still under investigation.
I'm Shamari Stone. Back to you. Four people
detained in the North Bethesda shooting
that locked down schools have been released. Police
say they were victims, not suspects,
as they continue to hunt for the gunman. The shooting
happened just after noon yesterday on Rockless Drive
and triggered lockdowns at seven nearby
schools. Police say the gunman shot at a group of four people,
then ran away. Officers detained
three teen boys and a man based on witness descriptions,
but later determined they did
nothing wrong. A D.C. man has been charged
in connection with a deadly 2024 overdose. Anthony
Winslow was arrested yesterday.
He's accused of supplying the fentanyl that killed 20-year-old
John Hargreaves, Winslow allegedly
also drove to a fire station with the victim's body in
the passenger seat.
I think anybody needs to understand that we're serious about this.
And you can't just sell a pill
and think that at most you're gonna get charged for possession
or sale.
We're gonna charge you with something equivalent
to a homicide if we can make the connection.
And you see behind me people who are determined,
we worked on this case for two years to make
sure that we can prove that connection
and we will prove it beyond a reasonable doubt.
Winslow is now charged with unlawful fentanyl distribution resulting
in death. Arrest tonight
for two Landover murders.
Police say two of the four men charged connected to both deadly
shootings.
The first happened in October of 2024 on Old Landover Road.
18-year-old Keshawn Pollard
died at the scene. Nine days later,
Treshawn Sparrow Bay was killed along Attlee Drive.
say these are two separate shootings.
The first was part of a dispute. No word of a motive for
the other. An update on the Prince George's
County grant controversy tonight. Executive
Aisha Braveboy says $7.6 million has
been returned by the Edward Charles Foundation.
The money was meant for the non-profit community
on the front lines to serve people in need,
but questions remain about the grant's approval
and the foundation's ties to the council chair.
The county expects another $5 million back soon.
Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar attacking the Trump administration
tonight after a D.C. home was raided by federal agents.
Investigators are looking into whether Omar and her family lied
on immigration paperwork when they arrived in the U.S. in 1995.
Omar denies any wrongdoing
and says the probe against her is politically motivated.
There are also allegations she married her brother to help him become
a citizen, which she calls a conspiracy theory started by Somali blog.
Somebody put in there that, you know,
that he had to have been my brother or something to that effect.
You were not related to him at all.
There's not some weird kernel of truth that she was something.
Not to my knowledge.
The congresswoman says she's planning to move out of the D.C. home
that was raided, saying she no longer feels safe there.
A Fox 5 health alert tonight.
A new mutation of the flu virus is raising concerns
as the season gets an unusual early start across the U.S.
Health experts say the changes could make it harder for some people,
especially younger people, to have immunity.
Doctors are urging everyone six months and older to get a flu shot,
saying it can help prevent serious illness.
There's a certain marker on some of the most common virus types
that one of the six cells that the body attacks it
might not work as well against.
That's only lab data, so we'll have to see.
But right now, what's clear is flu vaccine works.
Last year, about 32 million Americans had the flu.
390,000 were hospitalized and 24,000 died.
When we come back here at 11,
an update tonight on the president's arch
at Memorial Circle,
as construction may be getting underway sooner.
than expected. Stay with us. The State Department
is telling some diplomats and their families
to leave Saudi Arabia and plans to do the same
in other countries in the region.
The New York Times reports
the U.S. and Israel have drawn up potential plans to hit Iran hard
after the midterm elections.
The U.S. now has about 20 ships in the Middle East,
and a third aircraft carrier strike group
is expected to arrive in early November.
When the United States was flying wing to wing
with the Israelis, that's actually when the
president had the most support here at home too,
because you could see the military competency
and what the United States military was able to do.
We've got our military strikes warmed up in
the bullpen ready to go if we need to.
Iran has warned that any new attacks from the U.S. or
Israel will be met with devastating strikes.
New diplomatic efforts to try to end the war
between Russia and Ukraine.
President Trump's special envoy met with Russian President Vladimir
Putin after talks with Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky in Norway.
Putin claimed he wants new
talks but just hours later unleashed
a massive attack on Ukraine's capital the American
administration is doing a lot to help
a peaceful settlement this is all set up very well could
could we have peace day after tomorrow no but we could have
for the first time a break in this log
Zelensky says he's open to a ceasefire deal
that freezes territory at the current front lines
of the fighting thousands of protesters are back
on the streets of Paris a court overturned a ban
on demonstrations. Protests demanding school
reforms turned violent last week. Today's
demonstrations were peaceful. Curfews are still in place.
More than 2,400 people were arrested
last weekend. Another demonstration is planned for Saturday.
Meantime, safety concerns are
canceling NFL events ahead of the league's first ever game
in Paris this weekend. The Pittsburgh
Steelers have decided to nix
their scheduled Steelers House fan event in the city's Bastille
neighborhood. Despite this, the NFL is pushing forward,
confirming its own official fan events
and Sunday's game against the Saints are still on.
Construction on President Trump's 250-foot
arch could begin as early as two weeks from today.
The Washington Post reports federal
officials filed court documents stating work could start immediately
on the project at Memorial
Circle, following a key vote
by the National Capital Planning Commission next month.
Lawsuits from veterans groups
and local advocates are trying to stop or relocate
the controversial project.
New video tonight of the president's ballroom project. It was
shared by a White House deputy chief
of staff showing an overhead view of the East Wing
construction. This project has also faced legal challenges,
but the Supreme Court allowed it to
continue in August. Let's turn our attention back to this weather here,
a live look at the White
House from our Fox 5 Sky Cam.
I want to address something with Mike Thomas here. Oh, please
address whatever you'd like. You really haven't had much
to talk about this week. You're still
important. I want you to know that.
I feel like I need to give you that boost, that affirmation.
You too, Kenneth. But you seem sad.
You're like, there's no clouds in the sky. As I tell people,
if I wanted to be a weather guy that did this,
I'd work in Arizona or, you know, California.
You want the action. Right. We like a little action.
Now, the fun action, not anything that
causes any sort of destruction or anything like that.
But it's fun to be able to at least change
the forecast a little bit around. Right.
This has been Groundhog Day. Sunshine, mild afternoons,
Cool mornings. We've been stuck in this pattern all week,
and the only reason why I'm like, oh, here we go,
is because it looks like much of next week
is going to be about the same here.
If you're loving the weather, then you're loving the forecast.
Week does wrap up just a little bit cooler, but that headline
probably makes it seem a little bit more dramatic than it will be.
We're talking lower 60s instead of upper 60s.
We're talking overnights in the 30s instead
of the 40s in some of our suburbs.
but a lot of what we should be doing, again,
during the second half of October here.
Live look outside.
Beautiful shot.
Love this shot from our Skycam network.
Beautiful view of the city.
53 degrees now, Reagan National Airport.
Nice and clear once again.
Barely seeing the cloud go
by the sensor all week here in Washington, D.C.
Down to 45 is what they are in Gaithersburg.
50, Dulles.
55, Martinsburg.
50 for Cumberland.
Culpeper at 42.
Manassas, 41.
London Town, Fredericksburg.
We're checking in at 44 in Annapolis,
though 10 degrees warmer there at 54 degrees.
There it is.
Look how quiet we are across really the whole East Coast
and then heading back to the Midwest, the Great Lakes, this region.
Big zone of high pressure.
I'll show it to you in just a moment.
That's just not moving,
and it probably won't move for much of next week either.
We're tracking all week that tropical cyclone that was off the coast,
or subtropical cyclone, I should say.
We explained that it's all about whether
or not the storm is warm core or what meaning it's warm throughout.
I won't get too technical with you.
Anyway, it's no longer a tropical storm here.
It's working its way to the north and east subtropical system,
and I'll just show it to you on Futurecast here.
Racing away to the north and east, leaving us alone,
and this will dominate the weather pattern for the,
in the short term, foreseeable future here.
Notice how it just kind of gets stuck and sits across the northeast.
And I'm now running it all the way out through Sunday night.
And it's likely going to get reinforced as we get into early next week.
So that means for you, these pleasant conditions are going to continue.
Bus stop tomorrow morning.
Kids will want the sweater.
51 D.C. by sunrise.
That's 7:26 in the morning.
We'll likely be in the 40s briefly here in Washington.
But for bus stop time, a lot of 40s out in the suburbs.
After school, about 65 degrees.
Not a bad day.
I mean, plentiful sunshine, light winds, that'll make things feel good.
Sunsets bright and early on your Friday at 6:19 p.m.
Heading into your weekend,
cool kind of start there at 62 on your Saturday.
And then by Sunday, we're back to about 65 degrees in the afternoon.
Both days, count your clouds because you probably won't
be counting many of them with plentiful sunshine
and those temperatures in the low to middle 60s.
Now let's jump ahead.
We're going to head into next week.
This is this upcoming Tuesday.
This red circle you see right here is a high pressure, and we're going
to let this run through your Tuesday, your Wednesday, your Thursday.
It's still hanging out.
It does get to the north and east eventually, but then it gets
reinforced by yet another one as we work our way into next Saturday.
That's the noon hour, so right now, Halloween outlook,
and this is, again, next Saturday, Halloween Saturday.
Still looking pretty good here in Washington.
Finally, though, some moisture gathering to the south.
And sometime between November 1st and November 3rd,
models are starting to suggest that we'll
have to deal with our next rain event.
But we could possibly go through the rest
of October without a drop of rain here in Washington.
So we'll watch that for you.
Otherwise, I'm sure you're loving seven days like this.
A little cooler the next few days, but we're back right around 70
with sunshine continuing
and then mixing in some clouds as we head into next week.
Kenneth?
All right, Mike, thank you.
Some new technology to help people stay safe from gators and crocs.
A South Florida startup is developing a croc alarm.
It's an AI-powered sonar system designed to detect alligators
and crocodiles underwater.
The device would use green and red lights to signal a threat
while sending alerts to nearby residents and property owners.
This is still in development.
No word when a prototype will be released.
After the break, early voting getting underway today in Maryland.
We'll tell you what you need to know
if you plan on heading to the polls.
for Election Day.
We're back with newly released images
tonight in the search for two suspected
thieves accused of targeting data center
construction sites in Culpeper County. The
sheriff's office says over the past month,
the pair has hit the site of Germanna Highway three
separate times. They allegedly stole more than $200,000 worth
of copper piping and a large
amount of power tools. All in the county is suing
the Trump administration to block federal law
enforcement from polling places.
Officials argue this is an illegal effort to intimidate voters
and is costing taxpayers.
DHS claims ICE is not targeting polling places, but agents could make
arrests if a public safety threat endangers a polling location.
Early voting is now underway
in Maryland ahead of the midterm elections on November 3rd.
At stake this year, all eight
House seats in Congress, as well as Governor and Attorney General.
There's also question three,
which would allow partisan redistricting for congressional seats.
Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily through October 29th.
The University of Maryland's men's basketball
is bringing back a piece of championship history.
The Terps will wear replicas of their 2002 national title uniforms
for three home games this season
as they celebrate the 25th anniversary of their first
and only national championship.
The season begins November 2nd against Bucknell.
A special celebration tonight for the legendary Kramer's Bookstore
and Restaurant is celebrating 50 years.
The event brought together community leaders and longtime patrons
to honor the bookstore's rich history and impact on the district.
It was founded in 1976 in the heart of DuPont Circle.
Since then, it has served as a gathering place for readers and writers.
When we come back, the force is strong with this one.
R2-D2 called in to save the day.
You'll see how it all unfolded after the break.
High-tech help making a big
difference for one very lucky
kitten in West Valley City, Utah.
A public works crew rescued a kitten trapped inside a drain pipe
with help from a remote control crawler nicknamed R2-D2.
The crew's first try using a camera to find the cat.
