King tides over the next few days could produce the highest on record
and cause some coastal flooding.
Yeah, here we go again. Mario joins us live
from Newport Beach with more. Good morning.
Yeah, Jen, Bob, we are on this massive sand berm, 20,
maybe 25 feet here along the Balboa Peninsula and Giovanni, right?
Yes, yes.
You and your family live here. You're just a block away, you said.
Talk to me about how you're feeling with the king tides coming up.
Well, we're nervous, but I think the city's doing a good job.
They're proactive. They're notifying everybody what we need to do.
we have sandbags i actually bought bladders
the bladders seem to work a little bit better
um but we'll see i mean we're going
to experience this three times today's the first
of three different big high tides
that are coming you know i'm not sure how well it's
going to work because we still have the bay
on the bay side there's no berm so we might get we
might save ourselves from the ocean
but on the other side this right you know few yards on the
other side is the bay and the water's coming over the little wall there
so and this is constant work
that we see with this sand berm and it's not going to stop
because we have never seen this
this is new this is like the great wall
of newport beach they're doing a great job um i think it does
help people with their anxiety
but we'll see, we'll see in the next few hours what happens
um but i think the big one is coming in november
and that one they're saying is like eight feet so
So that one, this won't work, you know.
So you're saying your kids live here in Newport Beach?
Where do they live?
They saw flooding too, right?
So I have a, my son lives here on 9th Street,
and that got impacted the worst
because they got from the bay side and the ocean side,
there's no place for the water to go.
He had about maybe eight inches of water inside the house.
My house, I built it three feet above grade,
so you would have to have a 12-foot tide to get me.
But it's a newer build.
It's an older home, a newer build,
and it sits above the ground three feet.
So we'll see.
Yeah, kind of on edge, right?
Like I said, it's scary.
I know this calms people, their nerves.
And they made two.
So we actually have two walls.
You see one here.
But between Island and 15th Street, there's a double berm.
But when the water came on that Friday, it was kind of strange
because where you see waves, that day the water just kept on coming.
And there's almost like a mini tsunami, because the wave did not stop.
But it came in like a river.
I mean, people are on bicycles and knock people down.
So we'll see.
Like I said, we'll know in the next two hours how this holds up.
You've been here your whole life?
I've been here a long time.
We used to vacation here and now I live here,
but I've never seen it like this before.
Never, ever, never, nothing like this.
During COVID, but there was no berm.
During COVID, this all flooded out.
I think even boats washed up on shore.
But that was expected where this is kind of different.
This is what that that little tide underneath, you know?
Yes.
Appreciate it, Giovanni.
Thank you.
That's one local.
We're hearing from several here throughout the morning.
We'll keep checking in, but that's the latest here.
High tide coming up at 9:15 this morning.
