Well, just eight days until the midterm elections
and the city of Detroit breaking a new record
for the first day of early voting.
Fox 2's Amy Lang joins us live from Detroit's West Side with
more on a really impressive voter turnout.
And that is really interesting to see a huge audience
coming out to vote. Yeah, it's really great,
Ruth, obviously, to see people out and exercising
their vote and their right and their civic duty.
And on Saturday, you know, they had this big
block party here at the Northwest Activity Center
and throughout the city they had a really you know
robust early voting presence they had about 2,300 people
and so that was great it's more than in
2024 and one of the things that we found out here today
that's been really fun is the number of
first-time voters and I want to let you hear
from a few of them what did you just do I just voted
For the first time?
Yeah.
I just encourage them to make a difference, make history.
I realize how important it is to vote, to make a difference.
And pretty much today they made their voice be heard,
and I'm so excited for them.
She really got me into wanting to vote, so it's kind of nice.
I like it.
I enjoyed it.
It was my first time.
First time voting?
Yeah.
What did you think?
I was a little scared.
Just a little bit.
But it was like, it's like my civic duty to do, so I got to do it.
What's your message to other young people?
My message to other young people, come out here and vote.
Come out here and vote.
It's important.
It's important.
That's my message.
So these first-time voters really seem to enjoy themselves.
Now, the girls said there were a lot of questions,
so that was a little long on the ballot.
But, you know, great to see them out here.
And the reception everybody gets is so enthusiastic.
Like, every time there's a new first-time
voter, everyone starts cheering.
So we talked to the city clerk, Janice Winfrey.
She's so thrilled to see this happening.
And, you know, she's encouraging everyone to make a plan,
get out, vote early, make it happen.
We're doubling our record in 2024.
So, so far, every day has been double what we got then.
And so this is going to be a very, very exciting next few days
as it relates to early voting in the city of Detroit.
We're open from 9 to 5 early voting.
But if you find yourself in line at 5 o'clock, it's okay.
It's all right.
We're going to take that.
You're going to process your ballot just like you're
at the precinct on Election Day.
So this early voting center is now closed.
5 o'clock, they closed the doors, but
obviously everybody still in there
is finishing up their ballot
and some of the first-time voters who got a very enthusiastic
applause today, Caitlin
and Reggie, first time, what'd you think? I think it's important everyone
tells us to get our voice heard, get into that habit early
so I just think it's important and
just my responsibility to do. Yeah, that's wonderful
and Reggie, what did you think when
they realized you were first-time voters
and everyone started cheering? I was really excited
because I didn't think they were going to cheer for us like that,
honestly.
But I was really, like, also just happy to be here, you know,
happy to, you know, put my word out.
Happy to be part of it.
And, you know, you can't complain, right, if you don't vote.
Exactly.
Even if you're young, you still got to get out there.
Especially, I think, if you're young, you know.
So congratulations, guys.
You have your stickers.
You're putting your stickers on.
All right.
Get your stickers adhered.
Fantastic.
So that's live from the Northwest Activity Center
with some lovely first-time voters, Caitlin and Reggie.
Big applause for them.
Back to you.
