Life in prison. That is how long this man,
who's responsible for the Halloween mass shooting
in downtown Orlando, will spend behind bars.
Jalen Edgar was convicted back in August of
two counts of first-degree murder,
seven counts of attempted first-degree murder as well.
Fox 35's Marie Ettinger was in the courtroom for today's sentencing.
It was an emotional day in the courtroom.
Even the judge got a bit emotional saying
that this mass shooting was callous,
incomprehensible, inexcusable. Victims
and family members of victims all spoke saying
the impact that this shooting had on them.
Also in the courtroom, Jalen Edgar had
family members there supporting him,
and he even spoke expressing his remorse.
Jalen Edgar will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
But as victims' families pointed out, he still has a life.
No apology, nothing in this court could bring back my son.
Tyreek Hill's mother looked Edgar straight in the eye
and told him he needs to take
accountability. Timothy Schmidt's father said
his son was his best friend.
It's been almost exactly two years
to the day since gunfire sent crowds scrambling in downtown
Orlando. On top of the two killed, seven others were shot.
And that impact doesn't simply
disappear within the edits.
Jalen Edgar himself acknowledged this impacted an entire city.
There were a number of things the judge took into account
when considering the sentence called
mitigating factors, things like Edgar's youth,
upbringing, and mental health. The defense called
a psychologist to the stand to emphasize those influences.
The developmental status of a juvenile
our brain is vastly different compared to adult brain.
Edgar was 17 at the time of the shooting.
He's 19 now. He told the judge
and his victims he didn't have any intention of hurting anyone.
He claims he doesn't remember the shooting.
Defense attorney Junior Barrett and the psychologist he called
to the stand argued Edgar can be rehabilitated and should
be offered the opportunity to rejoin the public down the line.
The judge did not agree.
Edgar does have the opportunity to appeal his sentence.
I asked his attorney about that.
He says he'll have that filed in the next 30 days.
He was not eligible for the death penalty
because he was a minor at the time this crime was committed.
