James Kaufman, World News Report Today.
Ladies and gentlemen, the USGS is reporting
a magnitude 6.4 earthquake just offshore near the Philippines.
Now, this originally came in as a 6.7 magnitude earthquake.
There was an associated tsunami warning with this earthquake.
Numerous aftershocks.
This came in as a 5 on the DYFI, a 6 on the Shake Map.
and the USGS is nailing it at about 35 kilometers
of depth now remember the USGS doesn't cover
quakes over 4.0 that are out of the country
but as you can see we've had numerous aftershocks
larger than 4.0 including this 5.5 all near
this plate tectonic boundary the main quake really was
not near a plate tectonic boundary this in fact
is a well a inactive volcano not dormant but
inactive and i will show you that in just a moment there are no active
or awakening volcanoes
anywhere in the area now if it looks like there's
a bunch of earthquakes on the map it's because
there are remember we're in a simultaneous superior conjunction
with mars and venus opposite
it the moon earth and jupiter behind us all lined up
with our sun i wanted to point out the west
coast and how active it is incredibly active it looks like
the biggest quake over there is a 3.7
we have one decent sized quake here
in yellowstone oh they're calling it a negative 0.3 earthquake
right at 1.1 kilometers
and we have two here in the new madrid a very dangerous situation
there although they're very small
and fairly shallow earthquakes over to volcanoes and
earthquakes.com you can see the mess we have down here uh see
if we can pull there's a 4.3 there
on the aftershocks see if we can pull
that 6.4 looks like USGS can be the main source
again this is volcanoes
and earthquakes.com uh 35 kilometers of depth as we discussed
we have two other sources here we have Raspberry Shake that came in
at a 6.2 magnitude earthquake a default depth of 10 kilometers
and the indonesian government that came
in at 6.3 magnitude earthquake at
77 kilometers now we're going to get some detailed
information on this earthquake but before we do let's
take a look at all the aftershocks all right
this quake just offsets this
plate tectonic boundary so a lot of plates that don't
correct properly here you can see the problems in blue
and black throughout this area and a lot
of small plates
and plates that are just not connected at all as you can see here again
right offshore and well there's been a ton of aftershocks
but i'm going to go ahead and show
y'all that there is a volcano right next to this area
but although still considered active i.e it
has gone off the last 10,000 years.
It is not currently in unrest or showing any type of
activity whatsoever. I'm going to put all of them
on so you can see that there's been so many
aftershocks that it'd be impossible to determine how many there were.
Again, this is the Philippines
here, and this is a lot of shaking going on.
Over to VolcanoDiscovery.com, we see it was a very
strong magnitude 6.4 earthquake and this occurred
on january 7th today and well get some more
information below this 35 kilometers of depth about 22 miles as i said
when the quake originally
came in it came in at magnitude 6.7 as seen here same quake
and they had it 10 kilometers of depth
the default depth all right earthquake details
of 6.4 35 kilometers of depth main reporting source
USGS 3.8 atomic bombs worth of energy released
with this so it was nothing to play around with
especially considering all the aftershocks
are associated with it i did look for some video that
had been released maybe on Twitter
and no one has released any video of this particular quake or any
of the aftershocks here
is the final shake map here you can see reports coming all the way from
this far away really all the way from way up here
of people that felt the quake pretty unbelievable
uh they got it at 6.4 after downgrading it
from a 6.7 wow what a downgrade that was right comparing
quake data from different reporting agencies first off we have
the USGS at 6.4 35 kilometers
followed by Germany at 6.5 25 kilometers
of depth RaspberryShake a 6.2 default depth 10 kilometers
the asterisk of depth given as 10 kilometers often means
the depth of the quake cannot be
determined with sufficient accuracy at least
by RaspberryShake the Indonesians came in at a 6.3
77 kilometers of depth we have the Europeans coming
in at 6.4 53 kilometers of depth we have
the French coming in at 6.32 which makes me think
this was much stronger plus or minus 0.17 so again
which makes me think that this was much stronger period
the French are also at a default depth of
10 kilometers the Incorporated Research Institute
for seismology came in at 64.35 kilometers i
I think they follow the USGS.
And Australia came in at 64, at 64 kilometers, twice as deep.
So the Australians are always a great source in this area.
Now, we did have an associated tsunami warning with this quake.
And these are the Philippines through here.
We have no buoys whatsoever in event mode.
This is the National Data Buoy Center operated by NOAA.
So, in summary, it looks like the simultaneous superior
conjunction with Venus, Mars, our moon, Earth,
and Jupiter actually did cause an uptick in seismic activity.
I will look into any volcanic activity that's new after this,
and it looks like it hit pretty hard around the globe.
the big story of the day of course is going
to be the 6.4 originally a 6.7 and all the aftershocks
in that area and quickly mention the quake we had
in Yellowstone the two we had on the New Madrid
and how well busy the west coast of the United States has
in fact been that said god bless each
and every one of you guys please give us
