News this morning in Brooklyn, at least six people
are dead after a fire engulfed a home in Sunset Park.
Officials this morning saying
a lithium-ion battery was found on the scene.
Let's get right to Good Day's Jessica Formoso
with what we're learning so far, Jessica.
Good morning, Dan and Rosanna.
So we now know that three homes were affected by this fire.
One of the homes where the fire started completely destroyed.
A second one that you see behind me
there partially destroyed.
Mostly the second floor there is where most of the damage is. And
then a third one, it has a sign that says vacate,
the building department vacating that home.
We do know that there is some damage, minor,
but there is damage to that third home.
At least six people are dead in here at the scene.
It's still a very active scene. We have the medical examiner
on the scene as well as a number of firefighters still here.
The buildings department and the hazmat team was requested
because of the presence of lithium ion batteries.
Now, let's go to that video that shows the flames engulfing the home.
According to the FDNY, the call came in just after.
1 30 this morning for a fire here on 58th street between 6th
and 7th avenues. The two-alarm fire
quickly became a three-alarm.
Two homes engulfed in flames and a third also damaged according to
fire officials here on scene. At least six people have died.
Four were pronounced on scene. Two died
at the hospital. Two others are in the hospital right now
with non-life-threatening injuries
and three firefighters also hurt with minor injuries.
The fire marshal will be investigating
We're investigating the cause of the fire, but we do know
We know that the hazmat team did respond
because of the presence of lithium-ion batteries,
which could be an indication that such batteries may
be responsible for this fire.
You guys may recall that fire
in the Bronx last week at the Patterson Houses.
A lithium-ion battery was responsible
for that deadly fire that took the lives of four
people, three children and a mother.
Now, here we did speak with a neighbor who lives...
Two doors down, he says that he heard fire, fire, and he ran out.
Take a listen.
Somebody said fire on the house, so we came out the room.
We see the fire start through the door and up and up and up, yeah.
And then everyone come here to save the people, yeah.
So he tells us that by the time he got out and saw what was going on,
he never saw anybody from that house where the fire started come out.
He says he did see paramedics bringing out people,
even doing CPR on one of the people, but no one came out on their own.
We do know that the staircase
and the floor of one of these homes did collapse.
We know the staircase of the home where the fire started did collapse.
So now the question is,
Were people trapped on that second floor, unable to come down?
Those, of course, are questions we have for the fire department.
We are awaiting a press conference in the next,
I'm told, in the next 30 minutes or so.
We also know that the mayor is on his way here.
So once he arrives, I believe that is when the presser will start.
But, of course, we will bring you
the very latest within the next hour or so.
Dan Rosanna, back to both of you.
