“Off the Desk” is a non-scripted, podcast-style show where morning anchors Kaelee Collins and Julia O’Keefe talk about a range of topics in a more casual setting.
Good morning. Happy Friday.
Thanks for joining us for Off the Desk. I'm Kaylee Collins.
I'm Julia O'Keefe.
And I'm Chris Pazakis. Finally, Friday.
Yes, we made it. Yes, we made it.
It's a kind of a weird weather Friday, though.
I mean, walking out this morning
felt like you could have told me it was August
and I would have believed it.
Yeah, it felt gross.
Yeah, it felt like a summer morning.
We had temperatures out there that were in the 60s,
even some humidity. Dew points were in the 60s as well. So
Pretty crazy for this time of year.
Not typical for November.
Yeah.
By any means.
Usually we're talking about frost
or maybe even snow this time of year, you know?
Um, so yeah, I guess enjoy it
because today is kind of the last day of this really warm weather.
We'll begin the cool down tomorrow, uh,
still in the sixties tomorrow, but, um, by Sunday,
you'll definitely notice that fall,
like weather coming back and it'll hit us through all of next
week. It looks a lot cooler
and I see a good amount of frosty mornings next week.
Oh, get ready, Julia.
Wait, speaking of snow. And again,
this is the weather app, so you never know,
but I was looking ahead.
It said the snow's like for, yeah, Friday and Saturday.
Don't think it's going to happen.
It was just crazy to look at
that and see that it was almost
70 degrees. We're going outside now
and the humidity is hitting us.
I think it gets quite cold
or chilly next week.
Like, um...
Could there be
some precipitation around? Yeah.
I think for many of us here in the valley and stuff,
no matter what, it would be rain.
Could the Berkshires maybe get some flurries out of it?
Or up in northern New England like Vermont,
New Hampshire, maybe get a little bit of some wet snow.
Can't be ruled out.
But I will say
there's only one out of many models
this morning that haven't showed any chance
of snow next week. So no measurable snow.
Got it. So even if we were
to see anything, it would be more
just maybe some wet flakes mixed in with rain.
Okay.
Alright. So I will keep an eye on it. I'm not saying
it's a 0% chance of happening.
I'm just saying it's very...
I'm not concerned by it right now.
I know we've talked before
about the last time that it
had snowed on Christmas,
but what about the last time it snowed
on Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving?
It's been a while. Me
personally, I remember, I think it was
2014.
Uh, we were a little delayed going to Thanksgiving
because, uh, of some snow.
Really?
Yeah.
And I remember that.
Huh?
I can't remember.
Yeah.
And when I was really young, um,
I don't really remember it, but my mom has always mentioned
it, that there was a Thanksgiving that, yeah,
we didn't really have anyone come over because
it was snowing and it was, I don't know,
2003, 2004, something like that.
Okay.
So it's happened.
It's happened for sure.
But it's been a while.
It's been over 10 years, for sure.
That can kind of be a cozy feel, too.
Even if it wasn't a lot of snow,
if it was just a little bit of snow falling on Thanksgiving.
Some people might disagree, but...
I agree.
Travel logistics would make things...
That's true.
Because it's always a busy travel time.
It was snowing.
That's a good point.
Yeah.
I would like to see another white Thanksgiving.
I feel like that'd be kind of fun.
Yeah.
We've seen the white Halloween.
I honestly, I'd have to look into it,
but there's a chance we might have seen a white Halloween
more recently than a white Thanksgiving.
I don't know.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's true.
2011, yeah.
So I'll have to look into that.
Back in the Berkshires and the mountains,
it's a different story.
They can have a good amount of snow by now.
Or by Thanksgiving.
But for the Valley, I don't know.
I'd look into that.
I'll get back to you.
Yeah, let us know.
Cool.
Rain today, though, you said?
I don't know if rain.
Yep.
It's going to be really hard to snow out there today.
Not snowing today.
Yeah, today.
No.
In this 60-degree weather.
It's tropical out there.
You got humidity, temperatures in the 60s.
Yeah, there's...
Uh, showers, some downpours, just kind of a,
a yucky day, but I'm actually excited.
I'm excited to go home later
and kind of just get in the cozy clothes on a rainy Friday.
That's my plan too.
Relax.
There you go.
And do nothing for my Friday night.
Yeah.
We can get into our weekend plans
because that is on my agenda too, to start off the
weekend.
So what else do you have going?
Yeah.
Tonight?
I don't plan on doing much.
I'm going to chill.
Uh, tomorrow kind of hanging out.
My brother's coming down.
He's going to stay the night at our house
because we have a baptism on Sunday morning
we're going to actually here in Springfield.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, so going to that
and then going to watch football all afternoon.
That's great.
There you go.
And yeah, right on.
Get prepared for next week.
Matt and I are heading to South Carolina next week.
Oh, nice.
That's fun.
So.
Be warmer there than.
Yeah.
This time next week.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Although we just hit 80 degrees of the day.
Yeah, this is South Carolina weather, right?
It's honestly true.
Yeah.
But no, I don't know.
Pretty laid back weekend.
All we got going on is, yeah, that baptism on Sunday morning.
Nice.
Cool.
Nice.
What about you guys?
What about you, Julia?
Thank you, Julia.
Not a very laid back weekend.
She's an amazing girl.
Girl.
After work today, I'm going down to New York City.
Thank
It's one of my friends just celebrated a birthday,
so she's having a little get-together,
and I haven't really been down there to see.
A lot of my college friends are there,
and I haven't seen them in a bit, so.
Fun.
Yeah, gonna hang out with them tonight,
you
and then the birthday party's tomorrow.
We're decorating cakes, like little mini cakes.
Oh, that's so fun.
so
Yeah, and then Saturday night,
we're hanging out with Noah's friends,
because he also has friends in the city.
much.
And then Sunday, if all goes to plan, I might go to a Broadway show.
We're trying to see The Lost Boys.
I don't know that one.
Is it like Peter Pan?
No, it's not.
It's based on a rock musical.
It's okay.
Honestly, I used to think it was too.
So, um...
Not a Broadway gal.
That's okay.
Okay.
But yeah, we'll see if that ends up happening.
And then if not, if not, we get to head back
on time to watch the Patriots game.
So it's really like either option is fine with me.
I do want to go to the show.
So we'll see.
But yeah, I'm excited.
I haven't seen these friends in a little bit.
So it should be fun.
That's fun.
Yeah.
I feel like going out in New York City is fun, too.
I haven't done that in a few years.
Yeah, Patriots game is later this weekend.
It's 425.
Yeah.
Which is a big one.
Yeah, Packers are coming to New England,
so that'll be a really good game. And it's Tom Brady's
first time commentating the Patriots.
Yes, which will be so weird to see.
You're going to hear Tom Brady commentate
the Patriots game.
It's the first time, though, I'm thinking.
It just hasn't lined up.
Yeah, it has lined up.
And then Gronk is getting inducted into
the Patriots Hall of Fame, which is also
cool, so they'll both be there.
I'm sure other former Pats players will be there, too.
Oh, yeah, they're having a 2016 night.
Oh, they are?
Like the Super Bowl team from 2016 when they beat the Falcons.
Oh, that's awesome.
So they're going to do like a,
so you'll see Edelman,
you'll see Gronk,
Amendola.
Oh, yeah.
They planned all that because Brady was commenting on this.
You know,
he's going to be there anyways.
Get the gang back together.
Yeah.
That'll be fun.
Cool.
What are you up to?
Um,
tonight,
like you said,
I'm just going to hang out.
Bobby and I are going to try to do a,
like at home date night.
We put Ava to bed.
So we'll see what time we actually get her to go to sleep.
But,
um,
Yeah, going to order pizza, maybe catch up on Love is Blind.
Yes, please.
So we can talk about it.
Yes.
So I need to do that.
I'm trying to not see spoilers,
but like I have to like scroll past them very quickly online.
But yeah, so we'll do that.
And then tomorrow,
one of my best friends from high school who lives in Philly,
she and her boyfriend are coming to my hometown this weekend.
So my other friend and I are going to hang out.
With her family, and her boyfriend hasn't met Ava yet,
so I'll bring her over there and we'll all hang out.
And then, I don't know what else I really have going on on Saturday.
I might go to my parents' house in the morning beforehand,
just have breakfast with them and hang out.
And then on Sunday, I think we kind of have just like a free day.
Nice.
So maybe I'll get stuff done around the apartment.
We'll probably just hang out, maybe get together
with a couple of my friends and watch football or something.
But no set plans on Sunday, so I'm kind of...
I'm looking forward to that, having like a chill day.
So yeah, low-key weekend for me.
Julie, I, I, you, you do a lot of fun things on your weekends.
She's always, she's always doing something every weekend, like
I'm going here, I'm going there.
I try to make the most of my weekends.
Which is good, guys.
I'm just like, no, I'm not talking to anybody.
I'm not seeing anybody except for my dogs.
So, um, yeah, I try to make the most of them.
And I always say like living and working in Western Mass,
obviously I'm a little biased cause I grew up here,
But it's a great location.
Because I have friends in New York and Boston, you know,
we go to the beach in Rhode Island and New Hampshire
and it's two hours away to get anywhere that you want, which isn't bad.
New York's a little bit harder, but I'm taking the train.
So it's like, whatever. Yeah. But yeah, it's not, I can't,
you know, I got to take advantage of living in New England. Yes.
And like, this is something at this point of your life, you're going
to be so glad you did this stuff on your weekends and stuff.
When you look back on it, you have maybe a child that won't
Remember the good old days of, you know, going,
going out on your weekends, you know, but yeah, lots of fun stuff.
Yeah. All right. We can take a break here
and then talk about what's on the national day calendar.
Oh, yeah, it's a good one.
All right, welcome back to Off the Desk on this Friday morning.
Thanks for being with us.
Today is, believe it or not,
you might step outside and think it's August, but it is November 6th.
And on the national day calendar, it's National Nachos Day.
A good day, a Friday, to go have some nachos or,
you know, you can extend it to the weekend for
football Sunday watching and stuff. I'm a pretty big nacho fan.
Me too. I love nachos.
Yeah.
I need jalapenos on them for sure.
I like the kick on them.
Okay.
I like all the works.
Yeah, it's got to be loaded up.
Multiple kinds of cheese, bonus.
Guacamole, for sure.
Any sort of chicken or steak?
Yeah, like if you're ordering nachos out
and they ask if you want any protein,
what do you typically put on top?
Chicken.
I think I do chicken too.
I do beef.
You do beef?
Usually beef.
I like beef, but I feel like when I'm out,
I'm more prone to ordering chicken.
Yeah.
Steak nachos are good too.
You put some steak on it.
Yeah.
Or like a carne.
A carne asada.
Yeah.
There's a bunch of variations.
Then the flip side, dessert nachos.
I don't know if I've ever had those.
I don't think I've ever had those.
I've had them one time, but it's, I mean, it's a lot.
Like, it's really sweet.
Yeah.
It's like cinnamon.
I did it with cinnamon sugar pita chips.
Yeah.
And, like, I guess it was chocolate on it.
It tasted good.
That sounds good.
If you have like a group of people
and you want to split it up,
that's pretty good.
When I was a kid,
I used to come home from school
and make like the homemade ones,
just get a plate,
put some Tostitos on it,
spread cheese on it,
and in the microwave.
I thought it was the most delicious.
And I thought I was Chef Boyardee.
I thought I was making
the greatest thing ever.
Like I could cook.
Guys, I still eat nachos
quite frequently.
It's a great snack.
It's a great snack.
Yeah.
It's quick and easy.
Some microwave nachos.
Gotta love it.
Gotta love it.
Oh, yeah.
Have a nacho.
Have a nacho.
I guess we can look ahead to Christmas.
Why don't we just throw it all in there?
Why not?
You're talking about Thanksgiving.
August.
We're in...
It feels like August, but we're in the holiday season mode.
So, yeah, Chris, you were saying the other day
that Freeform has announced their Christmas
countdown.
Yeah.
I don't need it.
It's fine.
Program.
Programming, which Freeform used to be back in the day,
ABC Family, which we're kind
of used to.
What they would play leading up to the holidays.
Those graphics are in my mind.
The green and the elf coming through.
Oh, yeah.
And then the red Christmas ornament.
25 Days of Christmas.
And the classic ABC Family Santa Claus.
Yes.
That's how he looked.
Yeah.
Back in the day.
But yeah, they released their Freeform 25 Days of Christmas.
And a lot of other channels do it now, too, like AMC, TNT.
They all do.
25 days of Christmas things, but
obviously, everyone used
to know ABC Family, and now it's free
for them. But yeah, they have some good
stuff. I mean, they only list
a few of the evening stuff
on their list, but if you go on their website,
you can see the actual entire day
of what's actually on. Cool. But they
have marathons. One day
they have all the Grinches,
from the original to the most modern
one. Okay.
Um, they have, uh, the Santa Claus movies,
like the Santa Claus movie marathon.
Um, then they got like a, they got some of the old ones,
like the classic Frosty the
Snowman, the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
Those are classics.
Those are my favorite.
I love those.
Love it.
Yeah.
And then they got like a Miracle on 34th Street.
Um.
That's a good one.
Another good one.
Uh, Home Alone marathons.
So good.
I love the Home Alones.
Um.
Have you guys ever seen the fourth Home Alone movie?
I don't think so.
No.
I always only watch the first two.
It's not any of the original actors.
No.
So I do like the third one, even though it's different actors.
Actually, Scarlett Johansson is in there as a teenager.
Yeah, which is kind of funny to see.
But that one I like.
The fourth one, I am not a huge fan of.
And it was kind of like a more modern, almost like smart house.
Not smart house, but it had, I guess, a little bit more tech.
It was on Alexa.
Yeah, yeah.
For the time, it was, you know, a smart house.
Yeah, kind of
not my favorite of the franchise, but obviously
the first two are like the classics.
They do this every year
and I don't know if people think it's a Christmas
movie or I don't know because it's toys
but they have Toy Story.
I think there's like a Christmas scene.
They've had like Toy Story and stuff.
I don't know the first one though.
They have Frozen on here.
Okay, I can see because it's wintertime, but...
A Very Jonas Christmas movie is in here, too.
Have you guys watched that?
No, it's not...
Yes!
I actually...
It's a guilty pleasure.
It's so funny!
It's December 7th at 9pm.
It's a freeform premiere of A Very Jonas Christmas movie.
Well, it twists my arm.
I mean, my calendar's marked.
All right.
Another one that I like, I don't know if they...
It's hard to find just a very Brady Christmas, the Brady Bunch.
Oh, my gosh.
I've definitely seen that, but it's been a while.
The Brady Bunch is great.
Yeah, I feel like it was a Brady Bunch.
Sure, Dan.
But I was saying in the break, I'm a little upset.
They only got Polar Express like one or two times.
Oh, no.
Two or three times.
It's okay.
But like I said, I have it on DVD.
No worries.
And I don't have any.
And with this, I've.
You know, this comes with commercial interruptions.
That's true.
By having it on streaming or on DVD,
no one interrupts me as I'm sobbing at the television.
Oh my gosh.
I'm hearing the song with the children
singing in my ears right now.
Yeah.
Do you guys, what's your favorite Christmas movie?
A Christmas Story.
Christmas Story, that's a good one.
That's a classic.
Yeah, it's so good.
It's so good.
Actually, I only watched it for the first time.
I remember we watched it when I was in middle school
because we went to go see it in New York on Broadway.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, and my aunt...
One of her friend's kids was the Ralphie understudy, yes,
and so we went to a night that he was performing, and he took us,
like, backstage and everything and on the set. It was so cool,
and then after that, I just, we've watched it every year,
and it's still my favorite movie itself, even with that set aside,
but I have really cool memories associated with it.
That's good.
That is really cool.
Yeah, I like that a lot.
Mine's kind of a toss-up.
A Christmas Story kind of reminds me of my family.
It was one of probably my dad's top favorites.
His absolute favorite that we just
watched so many times is Christmas Vacation.
It's the best. And it's so funny.
Every time. That's the same kind of feel.
It's just nostalgic. More modern
though, I think I would have to go with Elf.
Elf is a classic too.
That's actually not on here at all. Really?
I don't see Elf or Christmas Vacation
in their lineup. Interesting. I think we might have
talked about this before, but there was a recent
interview that Will Ferrell did
that he had expressed when he did
Elf that he thought it was going to be the end of his
career.
I did not think that it was going to
bode well with the audience, that it was
too kind of corny
and I don't know, it wasn't
that funny. And obviously it had the opposite effect
and everybody loves it, but
most people love it. But then after it was
such a big hit, they offered him to do another one
and he said no, because he didn't want it
to take away from what it was.
Just leave it how it is.
It's just so quotable. It's so
good. Yeah, Elf is good.
Uh,
obviously mine is poor express,
but I love Christmas Vacation too.
And I've watched it so many times.
I've memorized the entire line of his freak out scene.
I know it completely.
That's so funny.
Can't really say it on here.
Cause that's some bad words in it,
but I,
I've,
I've memorized the entire thing.
Oh, I love it.
I'm excited to watch some Christmas movies.
Me too. They're so comforting.
Yeah, but I gotta wait a little longer.
I know. But like we all were saying,
a lot of them have some type of association
with your family or
the holiday in and of itself being
certain traditions and stuff.
And then there's some of the Christmas short
movies or shows. Have you guys seen The Prep
and Landings? No.
You guys should have to watch The Prep and Landings.
It's a cartoon, like a Christmas cartoon,
but they're kind of newer and they're good.
Especially the first one.
Check it out.
Especially for kids, like, it's fun.
Yeah.
But it's kind of like a cute, funny, like,
even I kind of laugh at it a little bit.
Okay.
That's good.
It's a good Christmas movie.
Another one that...
I love and this is a debate.
Last year, actually, Max and Dustin for Simply Cinema.
I was I was on their show one day and they wanted to talk about movies
and argue whether they were Christmas movies or not.
And of course, we did Die Hard.
And that was a Oh, yeah, that was movie or not.
And then this one wasn't the debate.
But I said my favorite on their show was on
Love Actually, and that is another one.
I do love Love Actually.
It's so, I would put it in a different category
of like The Elf and Christmas Story
and Christmas Vacation, but it's so good.
It's so good.
That is a movie I forgot about.
That is such a good movie.
I think it's a Christmas movie because it's
like the Christmas time of year.
I just love...
All of the different points of view
coming together. It's funny.
It makes you feel good.
It's so good.
I think I've mentioned it to you guys in the past, but no one really
either you know it or you don't.
It has Mario Lopez in it.
It's called Holiday Handcuffs.
Oh, wait. I know that one.
It's kind of an older one, like an early 2000s movie.
Yes.
She, like, kidnaps him to be his boyfriend.
Yeah, like, that's her boyfriend.
To bring to her family for Christmas.
Because she didn't have anybody
and she wanted her parents to think
that she was so exciting.
And he has to go along with it.
And he goes along with it.
I forget under the guy, like,
why he went along with it or, like, what.
The whole plot was there?
Yeah, you have to watch the movie.
She, uh, I'm not...
She gives it kind of like an ultimatum.
Just go through with this and then I'll let you go
and I'll give you all this. I don't know. You have to watch it.
But then, of course, you can kind of get the idea
how it probably goes.
That's with, what's her name, the girl who played,
the woman who played Sabrina the Teenage Witch?
What's her name?
it's uh let's see who's in here
because i think that was melissa joan hart yes melissa joan hart
yeah mario lopez that was the movie he was filming
when i met him when kaylee randomly
ran into mario lopez in connecticut
in west oh yeah in blueback square so funny that's
crazy but uh it's a good one i always like watching
that one too that's a good one
This is not the last time we'll talk about
Christmas movies leading up to the holiday.
Maddie's already watching some of the Hallmark stuff
on TV.
Is she like, she really likes the Hallmark movies?
She's a Hallmark fan.
I feel like you either love them or you hate them.
I'm not a fan.
I'm not afraid.
My mom and her sister are definitely Hallmark people.
I don't think my mom would say that.
She wouldn't really be like,
no, I won't put it on.
She used to. If it was on, she'd be like,
Well, there's nothing on TV these days, like,
and it's, it's cute and it's family, like, friendly.
They're all the same story. They all are, like,
and they're just the corniest, like, cringiest acting.
Oh, yeah.
And I'm like, she likes them, but I can't watch them.
They are so predictable, you know, down to the minute.
Everyone is the same when they're going to break up,
when the first kiss is going to be, which in their saving,
it's all the same thing. Like, go to the holiday college.
Leave the real estate broker in New York City,
fall in love with the lumberjack, and save the inn.
Yep, that's what it is.
Every single one.
But yeah, you have to pull your boat.
All right, we'll probably take another break here, right?
Yeah.
And come back for the end of the show.
Sorry, we're back from the break,
but we're talking to our news director through the hall.
We'll talk to you later, Kara.
Anyways, we're kind of bouncing all around here.
We were talking about Christmas movies.
It feels like it's August outside.
Why not talk about a little more Halloween-related news?
I don't know if everybody saw this, but there's a certain celebrity
who's getting a little bit of heat for their Halloween costume.
This year, it was Martha Stewart.
She dressed up as a homeless person.
And she got some pushback, obviously,
because it came off as very insensitive.
She's somebody that clearly is very wealthy,
and yeah, she then was trying to backpedal.
She did issue an apology in a statement
and said that she shouldn't have, you know, dressed up.
It came off as very tone-deaf,
but then I saw the other day, and I don't know if this
is something she's doubling down on,
that she ended up kind of placing the blame on
Craig Melvin from the Today Show, and she explained that.
Apparently she was there for an interview or something
and that Craig Melvin spilled chocolate on her sweater.
And so then she had no other choice but to, like,
use the stained sweater to then turn into a costume or something.
And that was her excuse.
I thought that was a little interesting.
Has Craig Melvin come out about anything with that?
I don't think so.
I don't know if he's even responding.
Why is not Taylor?
Why would you?
It's such a ridiculous thing.
So random.
I feel like it's been a few years
since there's been real controversy
over a celebrity Halloween outfit.
Yeah.
Which like, obviously this one.
It did spark some commentary, but it wasn't as extreme
as maybe some more problematic ones have been in years past.
Because there was a ton of other celebrities that got dressed up
and had parties and made headlines,
but nothing that was super controversial, really.
Yeah, it was.
Yeah, the hot chocolate thing is, I mean,
there was no mistake in seeing what she was trying to do.
She had a cardboard sign and it was like, it was not great, but.
Yeah, I did even, I did read the sign too.
And like what it said was, yeah, not the best.
It was kind of like.
Especially for somebody who
has a lot of money.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We're not having any problems
with money, for sure.
I think there could have been, if that
was really the case of the spilled chocolate,
there were probably some other options
that could have been. Just get a different sweater.
Different sweater, cover the stain.
Okay, you could make it,
you're running late, you know,
mess your hair up and then have a
coffee cup that you spilled on yourself.
I don't know, or something like
I don't know. Martha Stewart
is funny, though. She has a
cooking show that I've been
like, I'll put on on Netflix.
And just like the way that
she comes across even on that show, sometimes
it's just, she's very
into what she's doing and what
she's saying. And she'll have guests on
and stuff, and she's got some great recipes.
Martha, she does. But
she just seems like an interesting
celebrity or, you know, public
figure. Person.
Yeah. Yeah.
Um, but there were, there were some cool celebrity Halloween costumes
that I think we talked about a few, but, um, I,
I keep going back to Lisa Rinna as, as Kylie Jenner.
Yeah, that was a good one.
She looked just like her.
Um, and you know, it's fun to see the, the creative side of people.
The hand.
Heidi Klum always, you know.
Did you see, you were saying, um, Kylie Jenner,
did you see that it was recently Kris Jenner's birthday?
I think it was yesterday.
Oh, was it?
Yeah.
And so there was, um, you know,
the daughters were posting all tributes to her.
I don't know exactly how old she is now,
but they were praising her as a...
You know, ultimate matriarch
and everything that she's done for her family and growing their fame.
Yeah, that's a whole other, you know, story.
But it's so funny to see the videos when
when Kylie and Kendall were younger.
And I saw one recently where she's
like telling Kylie to do her homework.
And it's like weird to look where they are now.
Did they need to be worrying about that math homework?
I don't know.
It all worked out for them.
Yeah.
But yeah, that's all we got for this Friday.
So hopefully everybody has a nice weekend
and we'll see you back here on Monday.
Eat some nachos.
Eat some nachos.
Enjoy your weekend.
See ya.
