HARAPPA 5000 year old Indus Valley City in Pakistan Pakistan Vlog
Harappa is an archaeological site in Punjab, Pakistan.
The site of the ancient civilization contains the ruins of a bronze age
fortified city which was part of the Indus Valley civilization.
So just a couple of hours outside of Lahore is one of Pakistan's most important archaeological sites.
This is Harappa which was home to the Indus civilization and about 5,000 years ago
they were leading the way in terms of urban planning, clay brick houses and commerce.
The settlement was laid out along wide gridded streets
and wheeled carts pulled by bulls transported heavy commodities into Harappa.
So the significance of this site originally wasn't realised especially not by the British
but when they actually properly started to excavate it then they found it was one of
the earliest examples of water filtration, irrigation, bronze cooking pots and very
intricate jewellery pieces and now it's on the list ready to be approved for UNESCO World Heritage status.
There are organised cemeteries and some of the burials are richer than others
indicating the first evidence for social, economic and political ranking.
A little tip if you're planning on visiting yourself don't make the mistake that I've done
which is coming for the midday heat. Definitely better to come before 10 or after 3
when it's a little bit cooler and the sun's not quite so high in the sky.
Now there are actually three main sites, I'm just heading towards the largest of the three areas now.
So apparently at its peak there were over 30,000 people living here. Really get a scale of it from
the air. You can see the outline of all of the different buildings here. Although highly advanced
what is clear is that Harappan society was not entirely peaceful with the human skeletal remains
demonstrating some of the highest rates of injury at 15.5% found in South Asian prehistory.
Now there's a museum at the entrance to the ruins but unfortunately they have some
incredibly well preserved items in there. They've got examples of the games they used to play so
they have chess just like we do. They've even got dice. There's a lot of different types of
jewellery made from bronze, from shell. I hope that you've enjoyed this short video about the city of
Harappa from the Indus Valley Civilisation. Make sure to subscribe to my channel for more Pakistan videos.
