ISLE OF WIGHT A travel guide
Hi guys, welcome back to my channel. Now I'm spending the next few days exploring the beautiful
Isle of Wight. Now for those of you that don't know the Isle of Wight is an island just off the
south coast of England and the reason that I've chosen this period to come is on the south of the
island is a place called Ventnor and they have a popular fringe festival every year which showcases
some of the country's best comedy, drama, arts and theatre. Now I'm a big comedy fan so I've chosen
quite a few different acts to go and see but before I get stuck into the comedy today I've actually
rented an e-bike to explore the countryside. It's surprisingly hard to GoPro and cycle at the same
time. Now I've chosen to take what is called the Red Squirrel Trail and it's a circular route which
you can do either way and it stops at a few different places on the way. The first place I'm
going to be stopping at is Appledurham House which is a baroque building free to the public and it's
in the beautiful countryside here. Unfortunately it's slightly hilly but fortunately I've got an
e-bike which gives me a bit of assistance going up the hill. So this magnificent property is
Appledurham House and it's an 18th century building and at the time it was actually the grandest
house in the whole of the Isle of Wight. During both world wars troops were actually billeted here
and then unfortunately during the second world war it was quite badly damaged so although it does
look pretty much intact from the front as you can see from the top the roof is almost entirely
missing and it's essentially a shell of what it originally was. So the property is now managed by
English Heritage and it's actually free to get in but despite that I think there's only one other
family here today and I love being able to explore places without the crowds. I don't actually know what this
stairs are leading to, let's have a look. Oh nowhere okay but I do get a little view from up here
and you kind of get a bit of the scale of how grand it was there's just
endless rooms and a lot of levels actually by the looks of it. So this bit here used to be a carriage
porch which meant that people visiting the property or if you lived here and you were
arriving by carriage you could actually arrive undercover so if it was raining which unfortunately
it does quite a lot in the British Isles then you wouldn't need to get your fancy 18th century outfit
wet. It's on the Red Squirrel Trail which is Fremantle Gate and this was originally the ornamental
entrance to the mansion that I've just been looking around. Now on the quite cute map that
I've been given there's a picture of a ghost and apparently this is quite a haunted area. I'm going
to have to do some research and find out what the story is behind Fremantle Gate but apparently
every Thursday in the area they do ghost walks which sounds like a lot of fun. The village of
God's Hill, now this has to be one of the prettiest places on the Isle of Wight. There's loads of
thatched roofs everywhere, little tea rooms, it's all very pretty and nearby here was actually the
location of the first ever Isle of Wight festival. So one thing that I've noticed on the Isle of Wight
is a lot of the shops here sell a lot of local produce so it's pretty famous for garlic so
there's a lot of local garlic everywhere, lots of local honeys and chutneys and then now I've just
come across this awesome local cider shop. They have just got so many different kinds of cider
and wine as well actually. Gooseberry, mead, cowslip, cranberry, ginger, elderflower,
all kinds of different ones. So there are a number of lovely pubs in God's Hill and I've chosen to
come to a place called Woods Kitchen because from the front it's so pretty, it's a lovely
thatched building and then at the back they've got a really atmospheric terrace and I've chosen
some king prawns to start and then my main course is going to be a specialty which is the sea bass.
Towards the end of the trail I've arrived in Sandown which is another popular beach resort.
It's actually a little bit overcast today but it's pretty warm so there's still quite a lot
of people on the beach and in the sea as well and there's a really lovely pier just behind me
which feels quintessentially British. So I'm staying at the Royal Hotel on the Isle of Wight
which is renowned as one of the finest hotels on the whole island and they're particularly
famous for their lovely afternoon tea. Now I'm a big fan of afternoon tea because I like every
aspect of it. Little sandwiches, scones, sweet treats and the chance to dress up a little bit
and sit and have some food in a nice environment. Now one of the final activities I've got
on the Isle of Wight is the Royal Hotel has booked me to go on their rib and I've just
arrived at Yarmouth Harbour and I'm about to get on board and hopefully we're going to see
some lovely sights around the coastline. We're here in Yarmouth and we're going to go out to
the Needles, going to have a look around the South of Wight and just whiz around, get some pics.
So I've just boarded the rib now and we're leaving Yarmouth Harbour
and heading out around the coastline to have a look around and this is a very swish rib.
I feel quite fancy. 30 metres up, waves on the other side so we only approached from the harbour
side but we got pretty close. We're now going past some of the cliffs that you can see just to the
left of me here and a lot of these are chalk cliffs so they're white and there's a few multi-coloured
ones as well which are always very popular with the tourists.
So the rib ride was a fantastic way to end my trip to the Isle of Wight.
I've had an absolutely incredible time, the weather's been absolutely fantastic which was
very lucky especially for the bike ride yesterday and it was so nice to be able to go and see the
Needles today because it's one of the most famous landmarks on the Isle of Wight. I really hope that
