WEEK AS A MED STUDENT (first day of 3rd year _ family med part 1)
Hello everybody!
So today is July 9th, Monday and it is 7.20 in the morning.
This is the first day of school, woo!
And it is orientation day for my rotation and family medicine.
And I'm a little late because I am not used to waking up anywhere near 7am.
So yeah, let's just go ahead and try to look business attire appropriate and go to school.
And it's a very miserable day outside, raining non-stop, kind of like my soul.
So yeah, let's go.
Hello everybody!
So it is 11am and I just got finished with orientation, which was super fun, super interesting.
And per usual, here's a little landscape view of the weather and the school area.
It's very rainy and sad outside.
I'm really excited to start the rotation because finally I'm not just studying all the time,
I can actually talk to patients and stuff.
So I'm really excited, especially for family medicine because this sounds like one of the
easier rotations.
So I get to kind of take it easy, but at the same time it sounds really, really fun.
So yay!
Can't wait to start on this journey!
And I actually start my rotation today at 1pm.
I forgot my white coat though, so I'm going to go back home and get that.
And then I start my first rotation at UT Geriatrics.
I'm kind of excited because I used to volunteer at a senior center when I was trying to apply
to colleges.
And I don't know, I like elderly people.
I think I love listening to their life and they're a lot of fun, so this should be interesting.
Wish me luck going into this horrible weather.
Slowly trying to get my life together because I'm on E.
Aw yeah.
Alright guys, so I came back home to get my white coat.
And it's noon right now, so I have a little while to kind of explain how third year works
before I have to go to my first clinical.
So all of us tell the school what rotations that we'd like to take in a particular order.
And I didn't really care when I took family medicine, but it just so happens that I'm
taking it first.
And then we all got randomly placed in different hospitals all over the city so that we could
practice family medicine.
And for me, family medicine rotation is six weeks.
I spend the first three weeks at UT Senior Health and the second three weeks at UT Hill
Country.
So senior health sounds a lot like taking care of the elderly.
The good news is I have weekends off!
Woo!
Because not all rotations give you weekends off.
For example, in the OBGYN rotation, you have to work Saturdays too.
And you only get Sundays off.
So I'm really happy I'm starting off pretty easily.
These are all of the diagnoses that I have to see.
So depression, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, menopause, otitis media.
I have to see one patient who has one of these.
It basically kind of shows you what family medicine doctors kind of see and deal with
a lot.
And then they kind of told us how we're going to be graded and they told us how to study
for our shelf exam.
For the shelf exam, they gave us a lot of resources, a lot of practice questions, a
lot of objectives that we should know and be able to answer by the end.
And the professors also told us that a lot of people pass family medicine without any
problem.
So, very happy about that as well.
And just like any class, we have a whole bunch of random assignments that we have to complete.
And what I do is I use my iStudies Pro app, which I'm going to put all of these assignments
and put them into my phone once I find some time.
But I don't really have any time right now because it's 1226 and I'm about 20 minutes
away from my first clinical site.
So, I will fill in my planner later tonight and I will also go grocery shopping because
I don't have anything!
You're coming with me!
So let's go to Family Medicine, our first clinicals!
Woo!
With the geriatric population!
Woo!
Haven't worn this bad boy in a while.
Oh yeah!
I have so many badges.
Alrighty!
We are behind an umbrella because it is freaking pouring here.
So, before I get run over, I'm going to try to make...
Oh my god!
I don't know where to go!
Ugh!
This is horrible!
I don't want to be in the mud!
This is horrible!
I have no choice.
Either water or mud.
Okay.
This is not going so well.
Hey guys!
So, I am at In-N-Out and I have a whole bunch of cash on me because I am trying to replace
my phone, which sucks, and my laptop, which is like a 2012 MacBook Pro.
And it sucks.
I don't know why I look so orange.
But now I am buying a MacBook Pro.
It's like the newest version and someone is selling it on OfferUp for $1500.
So, I'm going to do that right now and hopefully get a brand new, awesome laptop that isn't
a piece of junk.
And this will be interesting because I am all alone.
But we are meeting at an In-N-Out patio.
So, that's where I'm going to be so no funny business happens.
Okay.
So, the exchange was successful.
Let me go home and then I'll show you my new laptop.
Okay.
So, this is my old laptop that I've had for not even that long but has given me problems
non-stop since the dawn of time.
This is what it looks like.
The mouse works sometimes.
It doesn't work other times.
I usually have a mouse connected to it, like an external mouse.
It's very, very, very slow.
It drives me absolutely insane to edit the videos that I make for you guys.
So, after, you know, I think I've had this laptop for three years only and it's already
a piece of junk.
So, let's go ahead and close the picture on that and move on to something bigger and better
for my third year, which is this guy.
This is my new laptop.
Bigger.
Better.
Faster.
Newer.
For any tech geeks out there, this is an Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch laptop with Touch Bar,
Quad-Core Intel Core i7-256GB Retina Display, and Space Gray.
I just came back from grocery shopping and I bought so much stuff, so much food, makeup,
things I needed around the house, fruit, snacks, and all that jazz.
This is something I needed to do for a while, but finally, here we are.
So, I am ending my night doing some EMR training.
You know, learn one of the basic things that doctors have to do, which is use EMR on a
daily basis.
So, hopefully I finish this pretty fast because I have to get up, you know, at 7 o'clock in
the morning to go to my 8 o'clock rotation.
So, let's just finish this EMR training and then go to sleep.
So, see you guys tomorrow.
Alright guys, it's a new morning.
Having some breakfast.
We are on the road and I'm already going without makeup.
Woo!
I am so tired.
Getting out of here.
So, the first thing I do when I get home is I put my stuff up, charge my laptop, my phone,
get food out ready to eat, put my laptop on, and put on some old-fashioned TV.
Also, I put my pajamas on and I get comfortable because I've been in business clothes all
day.
I also took the time to update my computer.
I took the time to add all of my awesome apps.
Google Chrome is the best.
iMessage, Word, PowerPoint, OneNote.
Hey guys.
So, I just got done with didactics, which didactics is something that you do once a
week and you basically go to a classroom like that, a smaller classroom with like 30 of
your classmates, and you discuss a health topic.
Today, we did health prevention.
Ooh, this is pretty.
And, yeah, it's kind of like a lecture.
I don't know why it has a fancy name.
But, so we do that for three hours and then this morning, I had my half day off.
So, I basically had nothing to do until 1 p.m. and then didactics and now we're done
at 4.
So, yay!
I have the rest of the day to finally start studying.
Because of my laptop situation and my lack of sleep, I haven't started studying for family
medicine yet, but today I'm going to review all of my sketchy videos including pharma
and micro because that's very big and just medicine in general, you have to know all
of the drugs because patients will ask you.
I'm new to geriatrics and every single patient has like 15 prescriptions that they take and
they'll ask you, what does that do again?
Or, does that cause stomach ulcers?
And you have to know if you don't want to look like a complete idiot to your patient
that you take care of.
Ooh, wait a second.
I didn't park here today.
Luckily, I actually think I remember a lot of my drugs.
I don't know them as well as I did when I took steps, but I still know them pretty well.
I can definitely remember all of the names.
Definitely not the brand name.
Like a lot of these drugs have brand names that you also have to know.
Usually the name that the patient knows.
So that's what I'm going to do for the rest of the day.
I am leaving school and headed back home to go do that.
Thank you.
Have a good day.
Oh yeah, boy.
After I have my daily food coma from when I get home.
So much food.
Stomach barely fits undressed.
Now we are going to just watch a whole bunch of sketchy videos until the end of time.
Not this life again.
If I were to read this sentence, would any of y'all know what I'm saying?
Therefore, in the CGD patient, hydrogen peroxide cannot be used to make oxygen radicals to fight infection,
leaving the patient vulnerable to infection caused by catalase-positive bacteria.
It obviously makes sense to me now, but I was reading it and thought,
Hmm, I wonder if America five years ago would have known what the heck that meant.
Oh my goodness, guys.
Somebody is selling their complete case file series,
which includes EM, internal medicine, family medicine, surgery, psychiatry,
plus Dr. Bastania's surgery notes for $30.
Oh my goodness, if I get this deal, then I am just such a boss.
This is my Flora app that I'm using once again because I have a problem staying away from my phone.
So what you do is you go to the Flora app.
Let's see.
Just say how long you want to be not able to use your phone.
And you press start and a tree starts to bloom and it blooms when your time has run out
and you can use your phone again after that time.
So I am going to bed now and it is 11.14 right now.
So, you know, I'm trying to practice some sleep hygiene, go to bed on time.
I can't not be on time to school like first or second year.
I am having to adult. I'm having to grow up at age 24.
I will see you guys in the morning.
Night guys.
Hey guys, so it's 7.30 and I am on my way to my third day of clinic.
And I'm dressed business casual.
I like to dress warm because I'm always cold in clinics.
So let's go.
Okay guys, so I finished clinic just now.
I am shoving tacos down my throat and washing them down with water
because it is 12.14 and I just got out and I have to go to my 1 p.m. nursery home rotation.
So I'm just trying to eat really fast.
Alrighty guys, so I am ready to do my rotation at the nursing home.
I'm only going to be here till 3, so for two hours, which isn't much.
But that's okay with me so I can study a little longer when I get home.
So I'm going to go do that.
I don't know if I can really bring my camera in anywhere where the patients are
because of HIPAA and all that.
So I think this will be it for now and I will see you when I get back.
Hey guys, so I just got done.
We saw like two patients.
They're just like geriatric patients except in more critical condition but not too critical condition.
They either might have cancer or they have dementia and pain.
They live in like these little hotel rooms basically
and all over the building there's activities for them to do
and medical students usually come by and play music for them
and they have 24-hour staff and like once a day a doctor comes by to check on them
and check on their medications.
Now, down to the day, it's 2.30.
So I'm going to meet up to go buy my offer of stuff for super cheap
and then I'm going to go home and I'm going to try really hard not to fall asleep because I'm so tired.
Oh my goodness, no wonder I am literally dying in this freaking heat.
Okay guys, I'm here at a random stranger's house with tons of money
and this is very, very safe and she's going to give me her stuff.
She's giving me the case files, Dr. Pistana's surgery notes and letters for only 50 bucks.
So yeah.
Case files, emergency medicine. Case files, internal medicine.
Case files, family medicine. Case files, surgery. Case files, psychiatry.
And they all look like they're in great condition.
Dr. Pistana's surgery notes from Kaplan Medical
and The Atlas of Human Anatomy by Frank Nutter, which if you don't know is like the Bible of anatomy.
I didn't plan on buying this but I bought it because
I want to do really amazing in surgery when I get there so I might as well have this book
and it'll be an awesome reference to have.
But yeah, the fact that I got all of this stuff for only $50 is pretty like crazy.
Can't wait to use this, see if I like it.
See how it works.
And I don't know if anyone cares but that car just sold me these Advantage 2 large cat
six pack of flea prevention and they're all in here.
And they sold it to me for 20 bucks.
You can get all sorts of stuff from OfferUp.
Yep, this is exactly what I want to come home to.
Giant killer wasp making its way around my window with my poor cat in harm's way.
So this area will be a great place to put the books for now.
Right under my patches picture.
And I guess right here we will put the beautiful Atlas of Human Anatomy book.
And boom, I will not be meeting my family medicine book case files as of now
because I still need to finish my sketchy videos.
Wish me luck because this wasp got to go down.
So where is it?
Ew!
It's right there.
Calyx is like, what the heck is going on?
Oh my goodness.
There it is.
Dying.
Taking his last measly breaths.
I'm sorry wasp.
Usually, you know, I throw these things out without killing them but that thing looks scary.
Calyx, get the wasp some dignity please.
Oh freaking great.
I just got two more bills to add on top of my freaking life.
You see my grapes and bees.
So right now it is 9.46 and I'm trying to review as many sketchy videos as possible.
I got sketchy going on.
I have some ramen going on as well.
I have so many more videos to watch.
So yes, I'm going to get on that, eat my ramen, not go to the gym because I suck at prioritizing
and hopefully go to sleep early.
So I finished all of my sketchy videos for the night that I wanted to finish
and now it's just time to go to sleep because it is midnight and I am very tired.
Tomorrow I'm going to be shadowing at the geriatric clinic all day
and then that will be my final day of the first week of third year.
So yay, I'm actually super excited to go.
I don't feel like bummed that I have to go to clinic tomorrow.
I actually really enjoy what I do.
I'm so sorry.
Anyways, goodnight guys.
Okay guys, so this is my final day here at the hospital as you can see in the background over there.
And yeah, it's Friday and I'm a little tired.
I really hate mornings.
But I'm excited to be here.
So I've got the white coat going on.
So just now I went to Starbucks and this group of dudes were like talking amongst themselves.
They were like, oh my gosh, are you a doctor?
Because I'm in my white coat.
They were like, is she a doctor, is she a doctor?
And then one of them was like, hey, are you a doctor?
And I didn't even answer because I had things to do and places to go.
So sorry boys.
So at this point in my journey I'm actually doing patients all by myself
and being able to write a soap note all by myself, which is really awesome.
And I have to go see a patient in a little bit.
So it's kind of cool to be able to be independent but at the same time really scary
because I feel like I still don't know what I'm doing.
I wonder if doctors feel like they get the VIP treatment.
They get their own spaces that are right in front of the hospital.
Drive the coolest cars.
And then there's us.
The little people.
That park.
All the way in the back.
It is officially Friday and I am done with clinicals.
So I'm going to go home and tonight I have something crazy planned.
I have to go to a bachelorette party.
It's my first bachelorette party.
Never been to one before.
Don't know what to expect.
So far I love family medicine.
I think it's awesome.
It's exactly what you think being a doctor would be like.
This is like the stereotypical doctor practice where you see patients and they tell you what's wrong
and you do exams on them.
I really enjoy it so far.
Interesting.
Family medicine.
Who would have thought I would like it so much.
Alright guys I'm off to the bachelorette party.
Tell you how it goes.
