WEEK AS A MEDICAL STUDENT _ SURGERY & HOW I STUDY
This video is sponsored by The Great Courses Plus, but more on that later.
Hello everybody and welcome to another vlog with me.
We are going to take a surgery internship readiness course and what
this class is, is it's a month-long series of
lectures. So basically I'm going back to the desk, I'm going back to
writing down in my computer and watching lectures about various things in surgery.
We're going to review anatomy dissections, learn how to run codes,
documentation. I'm super excited because I haven't been back
in a classroom setting with my notebook and my computer
and my snacks in a long, long time. It's been like two years since I've been back
in that setting. So I'm super excited and this is kind of
like my last elective before I graduate medical school and get my doctorate of
medicine. So I'm just, I'm happy to come full
circle and get back into the classroom. I'm a big
snacker, especially when I'm studying and learning in the classroom.
So to kind of stay engaged because I don't really drink caffeine,
I have some original Triscuits. This is a vegan dip.
This is peanut butter, just skippy peanut butter with some apples
and then I'll have a kind bar. So I'm going to have a lunchbox
filled with awesome snacks to keep me engaged in class.
So I have my lunch ready. I'm gonna go work out right now, do some yoga,
come back, take a shower and then head to bed and then get up at a comfortable
time to head to class.
Alright guys, so I am showered and getting ready to go to bed.
So I will see you guys in the morning. Bye everyone!
Okay guys, put together a little school look. This is lip gloss and concealer,
mascara and some earrings because I'm wearing
foundation for many hours throughout the day.
I feel pretty gross. So this is something that makes me look less
dead. I mean more awake but still something fun to do in the morning
to feel better or look better. Alrighty guys, so I'm going to grab my backpack
which is all packed and I'm ready to go to school.
On the way to school and I can't help but feel like this time I'm going to be
a lot more appreciative of lecture especially since I know how
hard work is or what it's like to work. I'm not
going to be a spoiled brat who isn't on time, is unorganized or just
doesn't want to be there which I'm pretty sure I remember being very
often but now that I know what life is like
when you don't get to be at school. I don't know, it's just been a long time
since I've been doing something that I'm actually good at
and I just can't wait to be back. Oh it's a beautiful day outside.
Hey guys, so I just finished my first day.
It was basically just an orientation day where we got to talk to the attending
and what is expected from us out of this class
and also to do a practice case together. I don't know, I just kind of remembered
or actually realized that I forgot a whole bunch of things like how much
fluid a person needs, what antibiotics to start. So I think
I'm going to start some sort of review during this month to kind of go over
basic principles in surgery. Oh right, I'm pulling up into a
Goodwill right now. Sure, so as a lot of you probably know
this is my last year living here and so I've been thinking a lot about
getting rid of clothes and furniture and books that I don't
need any longer because that's just a whole bunch of stuff that I don't want
to move later. I'm actually going to move in May.
I don't have to live here anymore or June,
May or June and if I get a job because if I don't get a job then I'm going to
renew my apartment and just keep living here or
maybe I'll do a live with my parents. I don't know
but I will be moving somewhere this summer. This is it, this is the
end so it's kind of crazy because I've
lived here forever but you know, gotta
gotta keep moving, gotta keep progressing and bouncing around from city to city
until you finally have a job. We are back at home and this is my white
board over here. These are the list of things I try to do
every single day like practice gratitude. I have a journal
right here that's supposed to help improve
gratitude and overall positivity in your life. I can link the
video of the idea behind this and where to buy this book if you're interested
and then I try to practice Duolingo Spanish
because I have a feeling I'm going to be needing Spanish as a doctor
in my intern year. I try to exercise every day
usually with yoga or some sort of aerobic activity. Online medded intern
guide. I bought the intern content so I can
kind of learn you know the rules and Dr. Williams guide on to how to be an
excellent intern and then I'm going to add something else.
I need to start reviewing content, oh god, uh reviewing content for intern year
so I kind of want to go over online medded, sketchy,
farm so that I can kind of remember all of the things I learned in medical
because it's been a while. So I'm going to take my
whiteboards book from online medded and go over his videos.
We should probably go over the surgery content. I just watch like one or two
videos a day, nothing crazy. I definitely don't try to stress myself
out doing things that aren't necessary because
really none of this is necessary. You'll be surprised that you know if you watch
a video every day you've finished all of his videos within like a
couple months so uh doing a little bit a day is kind of
the key to how I kind of perceive being successful. My snack
situation was excellent today, had a lot of wonderful
snacks so I'm just basically repacking the same lunch and then I'm
making my breakfast for tomorrow which will consist of overnight oats
just because it is so easy to make and really cheap to make too. Breakfast
for the morning and now our lunch is packed
so that is all out of the way, don't have to worry about doing this later on
tonight. I have a huge desire to go to sleep but
instead I'm going to eat and I made this yesterday. Lemon
tilapia with tons of broccoli and then after that we're going to do
some yoga, maybe exercise to kind of get energized instead of going to sleep.
Let's do it a more productive way.
The stuff you can just look down at and read off during rounds. EMR can be used
efficiently, anyone can. Okay and now it's time to
write in my gratitude journal. Just talk about what you are thankful
for in life. On the 31st of January I said that I was
grateful for apples and peanut butter, for my friend,
my friends, for Calix, for being able to travel
and in life in general I am thankful for being disease
and pain free. Last month I was working a lot with chronic pain patients and so I
was particularly grateful for that. I'm grateful to be loved and appreciated
by many people. By many people I mean like five but
that's a lot to me and I was even grateful for my wonderful
job or future job as a doctor because, I don't know, I mean when you work
with patients you get reminded again and again about how wonderful
and just purposeful your job is and I am just so thankful for that so I
commonly put that in my book. Today is the third. I know that because
rent was due. What am I grateful for today?
Okay all filled out. I also like to go ahead and knock out my
languages. There's an app called Duolingo.
It's like an owl. I practice Spanish. I also try to practice German
occasionally and if you have this app you really have no reason
not to learn a language. So as you can tell I've been I've been doing this
for a while now so let's go ahead and do this lesson.
So for instance it asks you to translate this phrase
which means this city has a lot of banks so
yeah basically that's the gist. Apparently part of this surgical
internship readiness course is we're going to get paged on our
cell phones about fake patients and I just got my first page so
let's see what happens guys. Hi D! I'm America. I received a mock page
from this number. Yes you did. Did anything happen to him
overnight? His blood pressure's 142 over 84.
Heart rate's 98. Respiration's 24. His temperature is 37.
Okay. Okay. Sounds good. All right. Good job.
Thank you. What? Oh man oops I hung up on her.
Yeah I have no idea if I did that correctly. Pretty exhausted so I'm going
to go take a quick nap and then maybe afterwards when I wake up
I can review some surgery notes but I cannot take it any longer so I will
see you guys in hopefully one or two hours.
All right guys so I accidentally fell asleep for two and a half hours.
I am energized all over again and am ready to go to the gym so let's go.
Sufficiently sweaty enough. Alrighty back from the gym so gonna go ahead and start
with a small salad while watching you.
Oh yes my baked salmon is ready. Ah nothing like a new candle. Okay guys.
Ah! What is that thing doing here? Calyx!
Look at that thing. Get it. Calyx! I'm gonna keep and kill that thing.
Alrighty guys I'm going to end the rest of the night. It's 10 30 right now.
I'm just going over some content from the surgery lectures on online med ed.
Let's just review a few things and not look stupid and turnier.
And because drugs can do whatever they want, you've got wonder drugs not assigned because of the W's.
Remind you that at any time...
All right two lectures down. I am officially tired.
It is now midnight. We'll see you guys in the morning so good night everyone.
It isn't a morning if Calyx isn't trying to drink from the faucet.
All right I gotta go.
Another page on my way.
Hi there I got a call from here. Um a page.
Yes this is uh Dr. Rivera? Yes.
Um I have your patient here.
There's a left hand.
There it is.
And you want to try this one?
Put it in that trachea that we saw.
Head is hyperextended.
Add air.
Hopefully that'll inflate.
No that doesn't look good. Baby's dying. We try again.
Got some time for my next class. Two hours so enjoy my lunch.
Maybe watch YouTube.
Oh my gosh such a long day.
I'm just gonna eat a small salad and uh enjoy some you.
All right guys back from the gym. Let's go ahead and knock out some
homework. Take some notes and go to sleep super soon.
Tradition and conformity and security less than people low and opens.
Hopefully this will keep me busy because I have to stay um till 3 p.m.
Then I have a meeting at 5 30 so I'll be at school for a long long time.
Lectures today. Let's see if we can do it.
Some food and you in the cafeteria.
All right everyone so I just finished another psychology lecture.
Took some notes and now I am here with my lunch for tomorrow.
This is menudo which is like a hispanic dish made out of intestines I think.
Snack bar. We got some berries, pistachios, peanut butter, and apples because that's
just like the thing I cannot let go because I have a full day of school tomorrow from
8 to 3 p.m. So if you want to come with me on a seven hour day at school and trying to
be productive and live through it all then we'll see what happens tomorrow.
All right guys last day of school so let's get to it.
So I'm all the way at school and it got canceled so uh that sucks but um
I don't know how to make this positive.
Now you're able to study at your own pace.
I just wish maybe it would have happened before I decided to get completely ready
and maybe sit through rush hour traffic to get here but hey what can you do.
All right well we're back home.
While I have some free time I'm gonna go ahead and get back to studying the things
that we've been learning in class lately and while I do so I think it'd be fun to go ahead
and give you guys some study tips on how I stay motivated to learn and how I study.
Okay so I'm in class and the teacher is about to start a PowerPoint.
So I go to my computer and I open Microsoft OneNote.
This is what I use to take all of my notes.
OneNote is great because you can organize them by subjects and these are the different pages
so like a new page for every class.
So I go down here I can title it I don't know anything and then you can just type
anywhere that you want and start typing where you want your notes to be.
You can drag it and highlight things anything you can do in Microsoft Word you can do here.
But one thing that I really like about it is you can just drag pictures from the notes
from online anywhere onto your notes and voila now you can type around the picture
or what have you and so this is what my notes typically look like.
For instance this is all words one picture
and this is a lot more pictures and notes kind of like all around.
Yeah that's kind of this is how I kind of make my notes.
I find it helpful to have both words but also have pictures
because I'm also a lot of a visual learner so this definitely helps me.
When I'm taking notes with online med ed I love their whiteboard book because like I said I'm
kind of a visual learner and his diagrams and advanced organizers are super helpful for me
to learn you know various pathology and diseases.
Earlier this week we learned about intubation so I have their worksheet right here
and one other thing I do is I have a whiteboard which a lot of you guys know about
this technique my fake iPad and I actually just bought some new markers.
These are at Expo fine tip so let's take some of these out.
As practice I can go over the worksheet and then I can list out the steps of intubation.
You position the head and neck open mouth take the blade under the epiglottis
pull towards you but avoiding teeth so on and so forth.
And I practice the steps of intubation without looking at my notes and once I can write them all
I know that I know how to intubate somebody or at least in theory I know how to intubate somebody.
As far as how I stay motivated I think that it has a lot to do with the fact that
I've been through clinicals I know what it's like to work super long hours and
work from basically 6am to 6pm and also I know what it's like to constantly have no idea
what I'm doing.
You know I haven't really been a doctor or practiced the doctor life for very long maybe
you know two years max but I've been a student for a long long time.
I've been in school for 20 years now and I am pretty good at studying being motivated
and being fascinated by whatever I'm studying.
It also helps that I really like science and I happen to be in the science field.
But I guess I've gained a bit of appreciation for education.
I miss learning I miss people actively teaching me.
I mean not being completely responsible for teaching myself everything.
I miss sitting down comfortably in a chair for only four to five hours and then going
home and doing whatever you want.
So I've gained a new appreciation for education and I even go out of my way to learn new subjects
on the side which brings me to my next topic.
So Great Courses Plus is a subscription on demand video learning service where you can
learn from top professors from all over the world.
The professors are from ivy league universities and there are a assortment of subjects that
you can learn from that maybe don't have anything to do with your life or your career in particular
but they're things that maybe you've always been interested in learning.
One of the things that I've always been fascinated by is psychology.
Maybe in another life I would have become a psychologist.
I've been watching Dr. Mark Leary's series on why you are who you are and I have found
the whole series to be absolutely fascinating.
I've been taking notes about the whole thing and I don't know it just improved my understanding
of why people behave the way they are why we all have such different views why some
people wish everyone had their views.
I watch it even when I'm busy and have a lot of other things to do because that's
just how fascinating and fun it is.
So instead of watching something like Netflix you on Netflix which is an awesome show this
is something else that you can watch but probably a little bit more I guess helpful for your
daily life and learning a new subject.
There's videos over science, math, history, literature, how to cook, how to play chess
so there is a video for everybody on this website.
If you are interested in checking out The Great Courses Plus you have nothing to lose
