WEEK AS A MED STUDENT (trauma surgery rotation).
Hey guys and welcome to another vlog.
Now this is a vlog way too long in the making, my surgery vlog.
And I apologize, I have tried to make this vlog week three times now but I just keep
getting so freaking busy and forgetting to vlog.
So I'm going to give it one last go and give you guys a decent quality vlog.
I am here in my apartment on my day off from surgery.
I have my study materials ready for when I get back home.
I have Kalix for constant moral support as he does.
And I am getting ready to go get my nails done because it's my first day off in like
two weeks.
So I thought, you know what, screw it.
I deserve to just chill out right now, get my nails done, then come back home steady
and get ready for work tomorrow.
I pull a 24 hour shift tomorrow.
I will be taking you guys with me obviously.
I just want to apologize again, sorry for taking so long to do this but I think at the
end of the vlog you'll understand why filming has been a little bit difficult lately.
We basically can only pray they have such damage done to their brain that they're probably
just going to die.
Alrighty everybody, I have returned home and now I can continue my studying except now
with a glam manicure.
Today's task will be four online med ed videos over trauma.
And then I'm going to sleep because I have my 24 hour shift tomorrow and I need to get
plenty of it.
Underneath here is the brain.
The brain's just doing what it's doing.
Whoops.
I am going to hate myself in the morning.
Goodnight everybody.
Okay guys, we are at school.
I mean work.
I don't really go to school anymore.
Ready for a 24 hour shift.
Hope the day goes well.
I have a feeling I'm going to be a little bit uncomfortable in 24 hours but hey, we
are saving patients, saving lives, that's what it's all about.
So what better reason to be motivated to stay at work and I packed lots of food so I think
I'm good.
So it is about 10 o'clock and I've been called to duty.
So I'm going to these massive elevators.
I am going to help probably use a camera in this procedure and maybe even practice my
suturing so surgery is always pretty fun.
As soon as the elevators open, oops, other side.
We have to dress up.
Since this is not really that invasive, I'm not going to put on my boots but we do need
a mask and a hat but don't get the red ones or people will be mad.
So yeah, it's one of these.
Is this a hat?
It's a hat.
It's a bouffant.
Sorry.
Okay, I am ready to go.
I will see you in a bit.
Bye!
Oh, I'm upside down.
Okay.
Hey guys.
So right now we are eating Pasha.
Can somebody show my sandwich?
I don't know who ordered this for me.
And this is Richard.
This is Matt.
And they are my, my, should I make a joke?
No, they're my colleagues today.
Not my...
What was the joke going to be?
Oh.
And I am head trauma boss because I work here all the time and they only come here once
a week.
Anyways, I'm going to go eat.
Bye!
So it is past midnight now and I'm getting something to get through the day, through
the night actually.
As you can see, it's completely dark outside and, um, day is going well.
Lots of awesome surgeries today.
Got to help.
Little surgical procedures.
It's all good.
I'm going to drink this bad boy and six more hours to go.
Done with my 24 hour shift.
Headed home to sleep the whole day away and study tomorrow and get ready for my work day
on Tuesday.
But until then, going to sleep.
Okay, I'm finally awake.
It's 6pm right now.
It feels so good to have slept 12 hours.
On my way to pick up...
Oh.
Oh goodness.
This is quite a life I live.
On my way to go pick up my free Starbucks drink.
I usually get a caramel frappuccino, but since it's free, I'm going to go ahead and go for
a venti.
Yeah, that's right.
Mather up that caramel.
Good god.
Okay guys, it is pretty late.
But I can't really go to sleep because I woke up at 6pm, so I'm doing some homework in bed
online medded over the chest.
The lame thing about doing all these 24 hour shifts is that I can't really have a set sleeping
schedule.
That's one annoying thing about my surgery rotation.
Okay guys, just doing a little makeup look for work today, even though I got no sleep.
But look good, feel good, you know what I mean?
We are done with trauma, and I am here with one of my trauma colleagues.
Hi!
This is Leah.
She's very weird, but so am I, so we get along.
And we are going down the white brick road as we head to our cars.
To freedom.
To freedom!
She has her 24 hour tomorrow.
Not you, Leah.
How do you feel about trauma?
I kind of love it.
Yeah, it's nice.
You feel useful for once every 30 years.
You're always lacerating.
I mean, not sorry, not lacerating.
Fixing lacerations.
I hope you're not lacerating.
Cleaning up blood, lifting people into CT things.
What else are we doing?
We do a lot of paperwork.
Lots of paperwork.
Yeah, that kind of sucks.
But hey, it needs to be done.
Somebody's got to do it.
We get to clean burn wounds, and sometimes hold little two year old babies while they
cry.
And give them teddy bears.
Hey guys, so I'm at the cafeteria right now.
I basically just inhaled my food.
I'm on my second night of coke.
And the reason that I didn't vlog yesterday was because I went to sleep after work and
woke up running late today for work.
So I slept for 12 hours.
I'm feeling really good.
Really well rested.
But my life.
My hair looks horrible.
But I'm not really supposed to be taking a lunch break.
Like I'm in the cafeteria right now eating my food, which I shouldn't really be doing
because I should take my food back to work and eat it there while I continue to work.
So I took five minutes to eat this.
And I think I deserve it.
Now I'm going to go back to work.
And sorry I haven't been posting or vlogging.
But I will get back to that.
Calyx is getting ready for surgery.
Aww, Calyx.
You look so cute.
I'm sorry honey.
Hi everybody.
So I just had some time to really quick curl my hair.
And now I am getting back to the grind.
Because I didn't do anything yesterday because all I did was sleep.
Because I was really tired.
Because I'm in surgery.
Today I am using online med-ed, of course.
I'm going over Bison Sting, CT surgery, vascular, and ortho hand.
It's going to be a long night, but I'm ready.
So let's start the night, guys.
And you're in anaphylactic shock.
The only thing that matters is IMFE.
One to a thousand.
Give it right now.
But the right answer is it anaphylaxis.
Give Epi.
Okay, guys.
All finished up.
Learned about peripheral vascular disease.
And then I studied Bison Sting's ortho hand CT surgery.
Time to start getting ready for bed.
I am sure definitely ready for bed.
Hey, guys.
I'm in the middle of a call shift.
It's like 5 a.m.
But I'm getting ready to go to surgery to fix some sort of infection or something.
So I have to put on my scrubs because I'm wearing the wrong color scrubs.
And, yes, I'm in the locker room right now.
Just going to change in the bathroom because I'm body shy.
Okay.
All right.
Go away.
Hey, guys.
So right now I'm with my mom.
She's visiting.
And just to celebrate, we are making some strawberry cake.
I'm going to add the ingredients together.
And it should look good.
I have these little pans, so we're going to make a layered cake.
This is one of those times when I'm really happy that there are people who are actually professionals at this.
Because if it was up to me, a lot of people would be disappointed.
Fresh, clean laundry.
And, most importantly, fresh, clean white coat.
Well, I guess not the cleanest thing in the world.
My mom has been making tons of food for me for the rest of the week, which is why I love when my mom comes to visit.
And she's walking the Rockets game, so I'm going to take this second or this time to do some studying in my room with some new plate of food.
Being able to study in bed on a Saturday with my pajamas is such a wonderful feeling.
I mean, during surgery, I feel like I've been studying like at 9 o'clock at night after a 12-hour shift when I don't want to.
And this is just bliss to just be able to be in bed, focus on homework alone with some food, some water, some great lighting.
And, I don't know.
Life is good right now.
The goal today is 40 year old questions and then to review some notes inside of my journal.
I have tons of notes in here, but what good is taking notes if you don't review them?
Alrighty, guys. 40 questions down.
Let's see how I did.
I think I did pretty awful.
You know, not that anything's new, but let's see.
Hey!
Well, I passed.
Oh, goodness, it's Sunday.
Time to get to work.
First thing I'm going to do is enjoy some pizza and watch some anatomy videos over the abdominal wall muscles.
Okay, guys, so this is my little plan for the day.
I have a quiz that I have to do every week and my surgery rotation.
I have to edit the video that you guys are watching right now, which takes up about two to three hours of my day,
which kind of makes it difficult to do the other things on my list.
But luckily, I just finished doing number four,
so all I have to do is the quiz and my UWorld questions after I edit our video.
Okay, submitting my quiz.
Hope I did okay.
Awesome!
Guys, next thing I'm going to do is work on some UWorld and do some medicine and surgery questions.
Yeah, please don't judge me.
I still have, like, over 700 questions left.
Some little tips and tricks to stay focused on your homework is to not have your phone nearby.
As you can see, it's not nearby.
It's all the way over there.
To have food and water available.
To have the sunlight out to be comfortable in your pajamas.
To have a plan.
It just helps me immensely to write out what my plans are on my whiteboard over there before actually getting started
so I know all of the things that I have to do by the end of the day.
In medical school, it's really easy, very easy, to become overwhelmed by all of the things that you have to study.
But if you have a plan and you can tackle things one by one, it makes it a lot more organized, efficient.
Okay, guys. Well, I'm going to continue working on all of this.
But like always, thank you guys so much for watching this video.
And thank you again for waiting for so long for me to upload this.
Thank you guys so much for watching this video and I will see you in my next one.
Goodbye, everybody!
