DAY AS A MED STUDENT _ RESIDENCY INTERVIEW
Hello everybody! Welcome back to my channel. So in today's video I'm going to be taking you guys
through a very important process as a medical student. Our fourth year residency interviews.
This is a very fun part of medical school. It's probably the best part out of everything because
I don't have to study, I don't have to take any tests, I don't have to do anything laborious other
than get on planes and travel all across the country and meet potential residency programs.
So we are going to be going to Georgia for our first interview. I booked my first plane ride
and hotel room so that's very exciting. Now it's time to pack and think about the things that I
will need for this interview. To kind of start from the beginning the first thing you need to
do for your residency interviews is book your airplane and your hotel room. Most medical
students will pay for the residency interviews with their student loans and I think the average
is between $1,000 to $5,000 that you will spend in the several month process of traveling the country.
It can get pretty expensive but there are important ways to save money. So this round
trip ticket is $374 to go from Houston, Texas to Georgia. So I'm not taking a plane ride from
my city where I'm in right now. I'm going to Houston which is a larger city. It has more airplanes
and then going to Georgia and that automatically saved me like $100 to $200. Usually the university
that you are going to interview at will offer discounted hotel reservations. Now that we've
gotten our plane ticket and our hotel reservation, everything's booked, it's time to pack. So the
first thing you're going to need is a carry-on bag and yes a carry-on. Check-in bags require
money. Be sure to travel lightly so that this is all you need. So as you can tell I'm a little
bit sick so I'm just going to be packing my halls drops for my airport looks and during the day I'm
going to be wearing Adidas sweatshirts and some sweat pants so that we're super comfortable and
warm. Followed by some complimentary vans. For my liquids bag I'm going to be packing shampoo,
conditioner, hairspray, moisturizer, toothpaste, Tide to Go, makeup remover wipes, foundation,
liquid liner, mascara, deodorant, shaving cream, and this Faber to Go Gain spray. I don't know.
In my makeup bag, obviously all of my non-liquid makeup including my brushes
but also some q-tips and a lint roller. For my electronics bag I'm going to be packing my
electronic toothbrush, my phone and speaker chargers, my retainer, earphones, and portable speaker,
and last but not least a hairbrush. Now we need to think about what we're going to wear on our
interview day which is pretty important though not that important because what you wear isn't
as important as how you act because that's really what they're assessing. Although how you act has a
big deal to do with how you dress. So the way to make sure you are dressed the part is to dress as
basic as possible. Don't put your personality in your clothing. Put your personality in your face
and how you talk and treat other people. I'm going to be doing the very basic black slacks, black
jacket, and blouse combo with some black flats. In medical school I have built up quite a collection
of slacks. I've got gray, black, checkered, beige, more checkered, skirts, but nothing is better than a
basic pair of black slacks. I've also built a wide collection of dress shirts. I think we're gonna go
with turquoise. And of course like a good medical student we all have that one blazer. So here is my
outfit everybody. All three of these things are from Express and Express often has 50 to 40 percent
off their entire store sales like on Black Friday and whatnot. So I pretty much can get all of this
for less than $150. So you don't have to break the bank to look awesome on your interview. Some black
flats to make sure that my clothes don't get dirty with all the other stuff in my luggage like my
shoes and my makeup. I'm putting them all in this little impenetrable bag. One thing I forgot to
mention is some bling. So don't overdo the bling but a nice watch, pearl necklace, and stud earrings
is all you need. And you know pajama underwear things like that. For my one check on bag I'm
going to be using my purse and inside it I will be putting in my wallet, Altoids, my halls drops,
my phone, and totally unnecessary but kind of necessary is this pushing slipping pillow.
Alrighty everything's packed. Hmm I feel like I'm forgetting something. Oh yeah. Alrighty let's roll.
Hello everybody fast forward it is now four o'clock in the morning and I am headed to the airport. My
lovely mother has decided to drive me and that's another way to save on money is make your parents
drive you to the airport. Thank you mother for volunteering. I know you wanted to get up so
so badly this early in the morning. Many days daughter. Thanks mother. We have my luggage here.
You probably can't see anything because it's pitch black because it is four o'clock in the
morning. Did I mention that? Be someone y'all. This is the cool Houston skyline. I don't know
if people know exists. Alrighty guys we have arrived at passenger drop off. I'm nervous mother
it's hitting me all at once. It'll be all right mama. Bye mother I'm off to go do adult things.
All right bye daughter. Hope I didn't bring any. That's what we have to do as young adults guys.
You have to tackle adult things like going to the airport by yourself and going on the airplanes by
yourself while kind of wanting your mother but slowly realizing that hey my mom is being left
behind and it's up to me to do this. By the way this is my get up and now we're just going to
the security area so I'll see you afterwards. Okay guys 8 32. Definitely need some of this.
Okay everybody so here we are at my hotel bathroom over here and then there's like a little living
room area right here and then over here is the bed and don't mind the bed because I just took
a three hour nap. So yeah pretty good uh hotel room for I think it was $70. So part of most
residency interviews is this dinner that's either before the interview date or after the interview.
This one's before so it's at 6 p.m. so um it's coming up. Luckily this hotel provides a shuttle
to that dinner. It's supposed to be some sort of little reception where you get to mingle with
the residents who currently go to that program. I have no idea what to expect but I'm definitely
looking forward to eating something. Alrighty guys I'm all dressed and I'm leaving to the dinner.
Look at this giant meat platter. Here's my hand. Hey everybody so I just got back from my resident
dinner. It was awesome. The residents were super super cool, approachable, nice, and they had
nothing but good things to say about their program. They see a lot of cases. Their attendings are very
nice. There's a great camaraderie among amongst the residents. So I'm very excited about this
program and to interview with them tomorrow. I have to get up at five o'clock in the morning
so that's not too optimal but I probably won't be able to sleep because I'm so excited.
So maybe it's a good thing. I just can't wait to have this interview and see what happens and
I don't know. See what happens. Alright guys I'll see you in the morning. Peace.
Alright everyone good morning. Let's start the day.
Alright everybody so I'm back at the airport. I had an amazing interview and it went great.
Everyone was super sweet and I can't wait to continue the process of going through my interviews
and see what the future has in store. So thank you everyone. I hope this was helpful and educational
or helped you in any way and I will see you guys in my next video. Bye everybody.
