4 Days on the River - Steelhead Fishing & Tipi Hot Tent Camping

[Music] in this video I'm reunited with my steel head buddy Steve one year later to set off on another multiple day [Music] float we caught a lot of quality steel head cut our way through some insane log jams and went through some of the craziest portages I have had since owning my raft enjoy as Steve and I set off on one of our best Adventures today this is just a little size update he is now almost 80 lbs and he just turned 11 months old this is the part where you got to act excited that we got cut down a bunch of trees and catch steel head all next couple days I'm about to head out the door right now so I'll I'll be there in like 2 hours to that Walmart okay sounds good all right see you man stay you may recognize that voice that is the infamous Infamous Infamous Steve from the 5-day float trip video it is now 1 year later we are going to be traveling to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan going on another four to 5 day float bushwacking our way to Steelhead heaven and camping all along the river in my Tepe hot tent but we got this little stinky dog and this is going to be the longest I've gone without you yeah just finished packing up the truck we're going to go meet at a Walmart top off our grocery list and we should be hitting the water around 12: 1:00 today super excited been counting the days now it's going to be a banger guys get ready this is going to be freaking [Music] sick is it who I think it is the man the myth the Steve oh dropping my phones Steve what up man what's up man good to see you bro you too good to see you so you made a little little Wall-E around here yeah you know everybody's going to step at Wally World before you go anywhere oh yeah we should be packed pretty light I you should see what I brought I mean I got two bags the chainsaw the Buddy Heater and waiters I mean yeah we're we're looking good all right man I'm going to take a trip into Wally World wish wish me lucks if you guys ever want to make videos or fishing videos make sure you get a good SD card with high right speed I made the mistake buy the Walmart ones these on ones cuz they're way cheaper and you need a high right speed see this is 50 megabyte right speed you want 140 150 or else your your video will look choppy and weird I should just need potatoes and I think we're good and then batteries all right here it goes guys into the Deep Woods now just making her over the [Music] bridge we have arrived and she definitely got a little mud bath on the way so Steve and I just got to the the Pud in right here and there's like a dozen cars and I've never seen a single person here before and obviously for internet reasons this is an undisclosed location but there's a huge transplant of white fish operation going on right now and I'm going to show you guys what it's all about this is crazy that's what the tag looks like wait what the that goes in the fish yeah oh my goodness we'll do another one here in a second you can film it if you want okay this is this goes deep all right them in the water that's crazy all the way down to the river what's the intent of the operation from start to finish we would like to reintroduce River spawning white fish into the lake tributaries okay so the idea of this is that we can put fish into the river and hopefully they stay in here long enough where they'll actually reproduce and then start that run and there a Fall Run winter run kind of right now uh the past few years November 15th has been our main spawning day with white fish one of their main problems is there's a limited amount of food in the Lial stage out in the big lake the hope is that the larel fish being born in the river have a little bit of time to be able to feed and grow before going out to thank you for your time appreciate that I know you're doing a bunch of stuff here what are the chances that we're here on this like super important restoration project Steve we should have all these people help us put the boat in that would be sick be very that's a good idea I like that the excitement is building she packed down way way better than last time we got the whole duck bill still he has the front feet space I have all the way underneath my rower seat and we're sitting pretty the weather's nice but now we're just going to up the car spot the adventure will officially kick off it's going to be a good one guys I got a good feeling about this all right you ready to do this man slipping and sliding oh look at that white fish is done should we try to help him going try to keep them let's see come on buddy fight fight oh There He Go got got his ight look at that dude I just freaking look what look come on if I see any like that I'm going to I'm going to see if I can help them out a little bit we're going down the river right now and you can see some of these white fish are just struggling to to make it I mean they they were in Lake Michigan literally this morning oh number one here it is Steve oh God here we go I just died a little inside yeah I think it's a floating log actually it might be good yeah look at that that's just floating this one's a little this one's yeah this one's fully across yeah whole thing's floating just roam me forward to Tad this one's a doozy it's deep right here that's the part that sucks all right try not to do any sudden movement I'm going to try pulling this nose over I tell you what I can't touch bottom here I know that no I got it I got it don't worry don't worry okay I'll give her another rip here three two holy moly that was straight balance I will not miss that one Log Jam numero well I guess number two oh God oh my goodness oh my God we got to rethink this yeah I got to rethink my whole life right now [Applause] [Music] how much clearance do I got going on hopefully Caught no more trees and call her a night oh we got her yep I'll do the same holy moly I mean I don't think you could thre a needle through there buddy we did it look at that that is as good as it gets that's the best thing we've seen all day yeah [Music] [Music] you guys watched the last 5day float video Steve we had Amy's chili but now we're doing Amy's chili dogs you to load this bun right here bring her over so I don't drub it into dirt I don't want a freaking black one dude there you go perfect there you go money perfect oh come on come on man come on wow this is kicking this is very good thanks for the chili am thanks for the chili Amy night number one not bad didn't catch a fish but I don't even think I could think about fish after all the traveling the portages Ju Just the logistics to get here we made it we're here we got a good campsite and we're seeing fish roll in the hole so at least worst case we know we're here and there's should be fish from here down so we'll focus on that tomorrow but successful day one and uh hopefully cross pass with some fishies tomorrow cuz I'm going to be definitely feing to to catch something by then so yeah night one [Music] [Music] morning number one day two slap solid got a little chilly last night we had some cot adjustments when we got here there was actually Frost all over the ground the ground was real hard and it's getting flush Sandy and it quite literally absorbed my C I mean I am sitting on the ground practically and we're trying to figure out if either I broke my cot or what we had slope issues Steve and I were slipping and sliding all over the place last night from the looks of it we should be getting into some pretty fishy water we're going to slow her down today and try to break down some water and get some steel up so day two this is the secret ingredient pure strawberry Canadian Jam yes smash that down yep that's going to go in my belly is it good delicious it's delicious fat from the sausage the sweet of the jelly you you actually like the jelly yeah that's my favorite jelly man when I go to Canada I literally buy eight 10 cans of that crap good and greasy [Music] we [Music] hols are good all right I think we got every little nook and cranny covered and picked up my boat welcomes you with open arms 10:40 a little later we should do better tomorrow you ready Steve this look good look at side that screams fish oh my gosh look at this bubble line down here now we're talking dude now we're talking come on Steve bye there's definitely a fish in this you want well maybe your depth is good but rather slide your bulk up this excites me I'm I'm feeling I'm feeling fishy in the air right now bags are probably so much more forgiving oh it bottles too man that one ate me up we went from these Sandy filled holes with just a bunch of old dead logs to a completely Rocky bottom with a lot more current we're seeing Boulders like this all over the place they're definitely going to prefer this Cobble Boulder grally bottom that left side looks good looks real good this might be the best thing I've seen today oh yeah that's a good looking float right there come on now no oh fish fish fish fish fish fish there it is TR trout is it a Brookie what is it this the first fish of the trip is what it is yeah that's a beautiful trout very nice very nice oh wow awesome are you kidding me this is oh that's fishy that's fishy that's fishy really holy crap that wasn't a fish that's a fish I told you that was a fish oh my gosh Steve like three times I that I watched the way it would tugged down I knew that was a fish come on Steve it was a rainbow trout I think like an actual resident trout Telly your fish was too colored up to be a steel head for that size steel head was that size it would been silver this time of year you're down dude that's fish that's fish that's fish that's fish that's steel right how big is that's a resident if I'm stupid and I'm wrong please let me caught a second ago I I'm apt to think that those those last ones were were resident cuz this thing is Chrome same exact size and I mean very Chrome got to start somewhere though hey we'll take take man it's a beautiful fish nonetheless there he goes stff all right let's upgrade let's upgrade Good Start there's one there's more see if we can find a little pot of them all right that looks really good oh there it is yep Steely that's a mature one that's a good one yep seing that coming that's a that's a real one it's bigger than the other one yeah there you go that's a better one cool definitely want to slow our roll now that we found some that's a nice fish yeah you ready yeah oh my God I saw my life flash before my eyes Steve holy crap pull the hook I like don't there is you're down down yep oh that's a better one yeah I one y you were way down I was looking at that oh he's gone bags baby it is all mad right now oh oh D he's got smoke hoping he doesn't stir up the hole too bad I don't want to re he didn't land yeah be a little more aggressive but you're good feel like we've ignored a lot of spots like this too we did looks about the same size that one that you lost in there ago Surfer really pretty fish all those the spotting on her cheek is beautiful Steve with the first real kicker of the trip finally hit an adult fish after losing a few all right Let Her Fly oh she goes all right let's move really I I seriously think you should send [Music] it that's fish yep oh that's a nice fish oh my gosh proper fish nice another respectable one at least probably about the same size as yours honestly thought it bigger at first it's respectable male been working for him these fish got to be in a winter pattern or something cuz we've definitely been fishing a lot slower water and taking our time in these holes and it's starting to pay off a little bit more but at a start it's about 3:15 right now kind of concluding the second day of fishing had to work for them a little bit this water is cold and they're sitting in deep lethargic holes they're not moving a lot definitely a change of pace for us today but we got the job done caught some nice fish it's time to start looking for a campsite that was close [Music] we got enough to shimmy there we go drag your Rod tip all the way to the left there might be a well get a Dr No there you go SL go right there this would hold a steel head you're right this would hold a steel fish there it is very nice what's that no it's not that's a chrome fish that's St there's one that's a local right there oh my God hold up it's a brook trout it's a big brook trout oh that is so oh my gosh Steve that is a gorgeous fish the fins are beautiful right in the top look at this trout that is a gorgeous freaking trout all the the blues all over it look at the tips on those fins that is gorgeous that is absolutely gorgeous I'm more excited about that than steelhead man all right let's let this guy go look at that pattern man like come on that's awesome and I think we just found our campsite hit a quick I mean it back to back we literally doubled up you hit that Skipper in a Brookie we're going to pack up here and night two [Music] underway we have found Camp going to get the hot tent set up and we're going to be king some walleye tonight should be a killer meal and I could definitely eat some warm food right now we got fresh Canadian wall life fillets here good as a gets good strips there it's going to be a freaking Primo you hear that yeah that was a whole tree that just came down that a whole tree that's that's what we want right there now it makes a THB like that yeah that's that's good that's going to be good it smokes fall me I hate white rabbits I hate white rabbits what's it saying you ever heard of that no you never heard I I hate white rabbits when like the smoke Falls you and makes it go away it's like a I never heard that all right so we got a lot of french fries left here to cook but this is the onion batch and we had a mound about this High We about engulfed this whole plate they were good so these are I know it looks crazy but these are our Walley inside of our cage and catch and cook [Music] all right back out Steve official fry review go that was way too quick over reaction to be genuine there's no the onion hint is amazing I'm going to have to do that when I go home a little bit of onion is a killer I do like the campfire salt though see oh man actually that was great that is delicious do think you're slightly crazy for not liking ketchup with anything with potatoes I don't like ketchup on like eggs and stuff but food doesn't need ketchup if it tastes good you don't need yeah but potatoes always need ketchup just a little something something it makes your food cold yeah you look perfect is that perfect yeah just a little bit yeah perfect told fish you say I give them quick shout their car heart midweight hoodies are game-changing this is my number one hoodie that I fish in and do anything outside and you'll probably notice I wear these all the time that being said it is time to get warm and bundle up for night number two here you may be able to hear in the background there is there's like 35 mph winds right now we have a storm front coming in right now we are prefrontal big winds right now and it's going to start raining maybe chilling here for the morning cloudy would a chance of Munchies yeah definitely going to be munching I'm going to be eating the rest of that fish fry that's for sure we got a bag of chocolate and some other things that I'll probably get into but yeah night two solid day caught some fish only one Log Jam I mean the ease of today's trip was a lot better than yesterday should only keep on getting better it's night number two going to get some rest and uh bundle up see you [Music] tomorrow so I think our plan of attack at the moment is sit out this rain because looking at the forecast we got about 100% chance rain for the next 3 to four hours Steve and I are going to get caffeinated watch me I'm going to catch a steel head come on oh no way all right all right I bet she'll catch something get her Upstream a little bit that's way too shallow you're way too shallow re real and you're going over logs that that doesn't even count as your first cast actually cast yeah see there you that's a cast can't just drop it in C you Ste I me pissed at you yep I I'm so sick of you right now you know how bad I want to fish that this morning there's a steel head first cast of the day oh my goodness you know this is either a really bad thing or this might mean today could be awesome he's under that log oh he's still there he's still there I see him oh he's wrapped around the log stop are you kidding step in the boat baby yeah perfect pancakes for breakfast yeah she's right she's from R so is Taylor Swift packed up the rain has stopped and it's feeling fishy we got to cover some water today but definitely looks like we're going to have a full day today a night and about a half day tomorrow before we're we're done with this this journey you got her there okay okay yeah I'll let put her right here for now all right let's pack the boat up okay there there I got her perfect day three I'm hoping to stick a big one I got one adult yesterday but trying to get something with some freaking kahunas on it trying to get something nice here it's looking fishy we just got this rain it does look like the river came up a little bit it's got a very light stain to it overcast light Southwest wind that little cheese ball dang all right you ready I'm going to tie up and we'll take a couple drifts and head out feels nice out it's perfect fishing weather the overcast no wind right after a rain look right in front of you what is this that's as bad as it gets we're going to have to repack the whole boat and drag it dude that's that's literally LLY the only way this is going to God oh my God no no all right well I think we should fish this cuz it looks pretty good and I just want to ignore the bad things in my life right now I'm not going to freak out just yet I think I think it's obtainable this hole looks nice actually I have high hopes for this maybe we found our campsite mhm oh oh there he is little guy looking at it just turning my head pretending like I don't everything jumbled up in there big time do you want me to just set the T up right now or what yeah start set the T up [Music] update time that was a doozy today was nuts not expecting the portages and the amount of effort that went forth today but got into some fish it wasn't really mature fish though we just hit a bunch of Skippers we hit some nice resident trout and super Skippers not even they're like small Adult super Skippers size steel head but still looking for the Grande and we've only pretty much got one more day to do it should be getting into some Lower River holes where maybe some fish are staged up and hanging out since the water is so low so we're uh we're tired we're hungry we're trying to stay dry keep our hopes up high that kind of rhym nice right start over no I I one take this is one take we're tired we're beat I don't even know what we're doing for dinner we're picking at random food and making a fire and going to bed so catch you in the morning for a hopefully non rainy day it did not say it was going to rain like it has so far today and that was definitely an element that slow things down got to keep chugging along day number four this point we can only hope that there's no more portages like we had yesterday going to see what we can do for fishing wise but we got to cover some water and pray that we don't hit another log JY yeah watch your hey you're down that's fish Skipper okay that didn't take long I like this a lot man this this has to hold something little Bobo there's one I got one too these things just been munching on salmon eggs apparently I mean I'm an idiot I wasn't recording but we just hit a really nice steel head finally a real one quality perky dorsal fin definitely a wild fish Still's got raised in the tail this could be a good sign guys could be a very good sign there he goes to the bottom I can't believe I wasn't recording dude we were waiting for that one all day you suck I know not shortly after Steve is hooked up as I break off there go pretty fish Surfer on up nice pen very Chrome hopefully we're hitting a little stretch here [Music] man no There She Goes [Music] I still love that winch yeah I'll never never ever have a boat without one tell you that on man the [ __ ] going on I'm getting a clean Drifter here oh that oh that's steel that's a steeled right under it right under it right under the cedar tree dude it's a nice one too yeah it's a fresh one hold up hold up let me hold up hold Jesus dude this thing is kicking hard that's a nice fish it's a nice one beautiful fish that's a perfect steel head wow he's a little bit bigger I bet wow that's a perfect fish hell yeah Steve we were I was so close to just lifting anchor and just being like yeah whatever here take this real quick I'd say well earned for this trip man oh my goodness finally to cross pads with a fish like this I did catch one other adult today that we didn't get recorded but finally just crossed paths with a very quality mature steel head but I mean it doesn't get more fresh than that this thing's got raised in its tail and our Valiant effort has finally been rewarded this is definitely the hardest I've had to work for for steel head but cross some pass with one like this makes it all worth it let this one ride and think he's more than ready to go nice we did it oh thank God [Applause] [Music] uh-oh 360 actually I'll save me from this one oh that could have just shot me in the gut 360 in it uh we might Beach on this one holy moly that's one way to do it I I couldn't dig my ores man it was freaking 4 Ines deep no maybe not that one could have just wiggled us out is that a hole down there yeah this is a I don't even feel like I'm on the same river right now you know whatever big the next biggest hole below all this is going to have something has to I'm bullied I can't I can't look at look at that that's a perfect ring that's so weird L that's what I'm doing a giant donut yeah all day long that's crazy I've never seen a freaking foam pile like that are you kidding me come on that's stupid oh I'm good I'm good I just don't want that or to catch you're telling me there's not a steel head in m [Applause] [Music] [Applause] that's awesome looking this is like winter water early I mean why would fish not sit down here right what's going on with you I'm back in bead land I'm out of bag a couple in my VI and that's it I'm forced to run beads now oh that was a good trip overall I had a great time work but I was expecting work yes not a pleasure trip by any means yeah going to the [ __ ] Bahamas no it is not like going I'm going on vacation for a week yeah it's not vacation and I work harder here I do at work that second one I was I'm not going to lie was was a little kind of like a little pic you know well you only miscalculated by a day right [Applause] [Applause] all right guys I think that's going to do it we just made it to the end here after 4 days three nights lot of portages a lot of trout a lot of Skippers and a couple adult steelhead thankfully we're able to end on a high note with some nice mature fish nonetheless it was a great trip Steve and I are whoop my boat is absolutely filthy and I think we're both spent ready to get a quick night shower what are you thinking Steve I want to go home everyone's like hey man tag me along for these videos look at
