Red Tailed Hawk Renest

This was a fun project to #renest a #redtailed #hawk whose nest in Columbus was destroyed in a windstorm. Glen Helen #Raptor Center rehabilitated the babies and were on the hunt to find a nest to place them. A suitable nest was spotted in Dayton just across the Great Miami River from the #Dayton Boat Club. The boat club were all-in on helping with this project and ferried us across the river to place this hawk with its new family. The nest is in a spindly, leaning Silver Maple, so I opted to climb a nearby Sycamore and traverse into the maple, to eliminate the risk of hitting the nest with a throwbag, and there just weren’t many safe tie in options on the maple.

Yeah, can you go closer to it? I won't be able to have such a good view of it from in there.
I want to look at this structure of the tree. I may have to climb that sycamore next to it.
Really, they don't need our help. I mean, they do really well. These babies are all within a
couple weeks of flooding. Wow. So, they're... The red-tailed hawk that we are re-nesting today
came from a nest in Columbus, Ohio, after its nest was destroyed in a windstorm.
Okay, I see the nest over there. This young hawk and its siblings were taken to Glen Helen
Raptor Center for rehabilitation, and they are just a couple of weeks from fledging.
Now, to throw my hook into the spindly, leaning tree that the nest is in so I can get over there.
That should do it.
Sycamore trees like these produce a very fine powder under their leaves in early summer,
and it's quite irritating to the respiratory system.
I'd like to extend some gratitude to the Dayton Boat Club for ferrying us across the river.
I chose this tree-to-tree traverse to get to this nest for a couple of reasons.
The first was to eliminate the risk of hitting the nest with my throw weight
while setting my line into the tree, and the second is there aren't many options up here in
this skinny silver maple, and I felt much more comfortable climbing into the sycamore
before coming over here. These two babies are about to meet their step-sibling.
The parents of this nest will adopt this young hawk as their own and teach it the ways of the
world. Okay, I'm gonna get out of here.
