This week, the Federal Reserve cut interest rates. The official reason? A 'softening' labor market. But that's not the real story.
What we just witnessed wasn't a simple policy adjustment; it was a surrender. It was the public execution of the single most important idea in modern economics: that the people in charge of our money should be free from political pressure.
In this video, we're going to break down how the White House just successfully hijacked the Federal Reserve. I'll show you the impossible economic trap—the Stagflation Tango—that Jerome Powell is now caught in, and reveal the market's secret message that shows it isn't buying the official story for one second.
Most importantly, we'll explain what a politically captured Fed means for your savings, your investments, and the future of the US dollar. This wasn't just a rate cut; it was a red line being crossed, and the consequences are coming for all of us.
hello everyone and welcome back to Boss Economics World
the only show on the internet
that peels back the layers of the global economy
like a subprime mortgage
back security
it looks complex on the outside
but once you get inside
you find it's mostly full of garbage
today's date is September 18 2025
the leaves are starting to turn
pumpkin spice is once again
a legally recognized currency in suburban America
and the Federal Reserve has finally
finally bent the knee
that's right folks
after months of
what can only be described as a political
waterboarding campaign
waged from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Fed Chair Jerome Powell
and the FOMC have cut the benchmark interest rate
by a quarter point
bringing it down to a target range of 4% to 4.25%
and they've penciled in two more pre
holiday shopping sprees for the market
before the year is out
now the official reason for the sudden dovish pivot
Powell with the grim determination of a man
reading a hostage statement
pointed to a softening labor market
he told reporters and I quote
I can no longer say the labor market is very solid
no longer very solid
that's the kind of language you use
when your Jenga tower is wobbling
not when you're describing
the bedrock of the world's largest economy
the unemployment rate has edged up to 43 percent
let's put that in perspective
in the dark days after 2008
we were staring down the barrel of 10 percent
unemployment
in the post covid whiplash we saw wild swings
but 43 percent
historically that's not a five alarm fire
it's more like someone left a bagel in the toaster
too long it's concerning
it smells a bit
but you don't normally call the fire department
and soak the entire kitchen
so if the labor market isn't a full blown catastrophe
what's really going on here
to understand this
we can't just look at the economic data
we have to look at the political theater
and my friends this is Broadway level drama
for decades we've been told a sacred story
it's a bedtime story for finance majors
a comforting myth whispered in the halls of power
The Federal Reserve is independent
it's a stoic a political body of technocrats
the adults in the room making data driven decisions
completely insulated from the grubby
short term whims of politics
yeah right
and I'm the starting point guard for the New York nicks
the events leading up to this rate cut
have torn that story to shreds
lit it on fire
and scattered the ashes over Wall Street
President Trump never won for subtlety
has treated the Federal Reserve
like a slow
performing subsidiary of the Trump Organization
for months he's been publicly demanding rate cuts
tweeting in all caps
and waging a legal war to reshape the Feds
Board of governors
into his own personal cheerleading squad
and this week we saw the culmination of that effort
sitting at the FOMC table
was the newly sworn in Governor Stephen Miran
who is Mr Miran you ask
oh just
the chair of the White House
Council of Economic Advisers
on a temporary leave
that's like saying
your starting pitcher is just on a temporary leave
to go umpire the game
it's a laughable conflict of interest
the fox isn't just guarding the henhouse
he's now on the henhouse's board of directors
voting on feed distribution policies
and what was Neron's contribution
he was the loan dissent
but he didn't dissent because the cut was a bad idea
he descended because he wanted a bigger cut
a 50 basis point fire hose of cheap money
this is the political signal flare
the message isn't about data it's about loyalty
it's the president's man saying this is a good start
but my boss expects more
Powell managed to get a near unanimous 11 to 1 vote
which some analysts are spinning as a victory for him
a sign of solidarity please
that's like saying
the pilot showed great leadership
by agreeing to fly to the hijackers destination
it's not solidarity
it's a shared recognition
of the political gun to their heads
this erosion of Fed independence is the single
most dangerous
long term trend in the American economy
when the institution in charge of the dollar
becomes a political tool
it loses the one thing it absolutely needs to
credibility look at history
look at Turkey under Erdogan
where the central bank was forced into insane rate
cutting cycles in the face of hyperinflation
utterly vaporizing the Turkish lira
and the savings of its citizens
look at Argentina
look at the Weimar Republic
this is a well trodden path
and it never ever leads anywhere good
the moment the market believes
the feds
primary mandate is the president's reelection chances
not stable prices and maximum employment
the game is over
and we are dangerously close to that moment
so we've established the political pressure
but to be fair to Paul
he's not just in a political bind
he's in an economic one of the worst kind
he is trapped in the dreaded stagflation tango
stagflation that's the toxic
economic cocktail of stagnating growth
the stag part and high inflation
the flat ion part
it's the 1970s all over again
but this time
with more avocado toast and fewer disco balls
the Fed is facing two monsters at once
and the problem is
the weapon you use to fight one monster
only makes the other one stronger
monster No. 1 the inflationary hydra
Paul himself acknowledged it
inflation
by their preferred gauge is running at 26 percent
and in his words
remains somewhat elevated
why one big reason is the very tariffs
the White House has been championing
for years
we were told tariffs were paid by other countries
that was always a fantasy
study after study
from the National Bureau of Economic Research
to the Peterson Institute
showed that the tariffs
from the first Trump administration
were passed on
almost entirely to US consumers and businesses
we are seeing the second
and third order effects of that now
supply chains that were rerouted are now more expensive
companies that absorbed the costs for years
have finally given up and are passing them on
this isn't transitory inflation
like we were told back in 2021
this is a sticky
structural inflation
driven by deglobalization and trade policy
to fight this monster
the Fed is supposed to raise interest rates
make borrowing more expensive
cool down demand and put a lid on prices
monster No. 2 the slowdown sloth
but wait Paul can't raise rates
because he's also staring at the other monster
a slowing economy
the labor market is softening
job creation is sputtering
the unemployment rate is ticking up
if they raise rates
they risk tipping this slowdown
into a full blown recession
throwing millions of people out of work
and you can bet
the president wouldn't be too happy about that
heading into an election cycle
so to fight this monster
the Fed is supposed to cut interest rates
make borrowing cheaper
encourage businesses to invest in higher
and stimulate demand
do you see the trap
cut rates to boost jobs fuel the inflation fire
hike rates to fight inflation kill the job market
they are utterly completely trapped
this is the economic equivalent of being
asked to defuse a bomb
where cutting the red wire speeds up the timer
and cutting the blue wire also speeds up the timer
there is no good move
so what did they do
they chose the path of least political resistance
they cut rates
giving the White House what it wanted
while talking tough on inflation
Powell called it a risk management cut
a phrase so nebulously corporate
it could mean anything
it's the central bankers version of it is what it is
now for the most interesting part
how did the so called smart money react to all this
if the Fed cuts rates
you'd expect the US dollar to weaken
lower returns on holding dollars
and bond yields to fall
the price of existing bonds with higher yields goes up
but that's not what happened
the dollar actually erased its losses and strengthened
Treasury yields particularly the five year rose
what does this tell you
it tells you the market is not stupid
the market listened to Powell's words
looked at the 11 to 1 vote
and heard something very different
from the Fed is here to save us
it heard a hawkish cut
let me translate that from Wall Street gibberish
the market interpreted this
not as the beginning of an aggressive panicked
the economy is falling off a cliff easing cycle
instead it saw reluctant Fed
pushed into a corner by the White House
making a single concession
while signaling through its language
meeting by meeting
concerns about inflation
that
it has no intention of opening the monetary floodgates
the ryin bond yields is particularly telling
it suggests the bond market believes that this rate cut
by potentially letting inflation run a little hotter
will force the Fed to be more aggressive
with hikes later on
down the line
or even more cynically
it believes that with the feds credibility damaged
long term
inflation expectations are becoming unanchored
and investors are demanding a higher return
to hold US debt
to compensate for that risk
essentially the market called powers bluff
it sees a Fed that is politically compromised
and economically trapped
and that my friends leads to volatility and uncertainty
the two things that long term investors hate most
so let's bring this home
why should you
an ordinary person trying to save for retirement
or a professional trying to navigate this mess
care about this high level drama
a politically pressured Fed that is soft on inflation
is a direct attack on your savings account
a 26 percent inflation rate
means that any cash you have
sitting in the bank
is losing
26 percent of its purchasing power every single year
the low interest rate environment
they are trying to engineer
makes it impossible to find safe
inflation beating returns
they are effectively sacrificing the wealth of savers
to stimulate borrowing
and juice short term growth metrics
we just went through a massive asset price
inflation cycle
from 2020 to 2022
fueled by 0% interest rates in QE
this move this capitulation to political pressure
signals that the Fed put is alive and well
the Fed put is the markets belief
that if stocks fall far enough
the Fed will always step in with cheap money
to bail investors out
this encourages reckless risk taking
creating bubbles in stocks
crypto real estate you name it
and as we all know every bubble eventually pops
this move just inflates it a little more
before the inevitable
a compromised Fed and a volatile dollar
send shockwaves
through the entire global financial system
the US dollar is the world's reserve currency
when its stewardship is called into question
it destabilizes international trade and finance
it may even accelerate the move by countries like China
and Russia to de dollarize
a long term threat to American economic power
so what we witnessed on September 18 2025
wasn't just a simple quarter point rate cut
it was a watershed moment
it was the public spectacle
of the world's most powerful central bank
sacrificing a piece of its long term credibility
on the altar of short term political expediency
Jerome Powell is trying to walk an impossible tightrope
between a stagflationary economy
and a very demanding president
he gave the market a risk management cut
but the real risk he's managing isn't economic
it's political
the risk is a 3 a m tweet storm
the risk is being fired
the great Federal Reserve chair Paul Volker
faced with rampant inflation in the 1980s
knew what he had to do
he jacked up interest rates to 20 percent
induced a painful recession
and broke the back of inflation
he did it because he knew that without credibility
the Fed had nothing
he was willing to be the most hated man in America
to save the economy
today the Fed has made a different choice
it chose to be popular in the White House
and in the long run
that is a far far more dangerous decision
stay cynical stay solvent
and for heaven's sake keep an eye on your portfolio
it's going to be a bumpy ride
I'll see you next time on Boss Economics World
