In this video you can join us on the road less traveled as we show you what traveling in Guatemala is really like. As we continue our overland 'van life' project heading north in our Kombi van through the Americas. In this chapter of our Central America adventure, we enter Guatemala and introduce you to some pretty cool locals. For us it was fascinating to see Wilger's house and his simple lifestyle, the best way we could repay him was by inviting him to come and see what vanlife was like as we set off exploring the coast of Guatemala. We hope that you enjoy sharing another adventure with us....from then on the journey gets pretty crazy, so be sure to subscribe so you can see what happens.
Despite the rain, our entry to Guatemala was our favourite start to the country so far.
Our new buddy Wilher invited us around to check out his place.
This is a boat.
How is it with the rain?
Very good, no problem.
It has to change approximately every 8 or 10 years.
This is the bedroom.
This is the garden area.
There are a lot of plants, like flowers.
There are tangerines, lemons, bananas.
I don't know if you know what this is.
Here they call it lemon tea.
This is where we store all our clothes.
This is where we bathe.
This is where we cook.
This is where we use firewood.
What are you cooking with firewood instead of gas?
It's cheaper.
It's easier.
What did we get? What did you find?
Seven eggs.
In the bed?
Seven eggs in the bed?
Looks like we're having eggs for breakfast.
I'm using a ball of fishing line as a scrubber and a bar of soap.
With water from a well to wash the dishes from our Guatemalan breakfast.
Even a boring task is fun.
Even the most boring task can be interesting.
I started here in Chile.
I went over there to the coast.
Now we're here.
Then Mexico, the United States, Canada.
And there we are.
It's a part of the United States.
But it's over there.
I don't know what I'm going to do next.
But my home is here.
My island is here.
It's close to the coast of France.
It's far from where this is.
Memories to last a lifetime.
This looks like it's never going to happen again.
Maybe I should leave this to the guy.
You're doing a great job.
Maybe not.
I'm going to crash.
After spending a few days with Wilkert here in his local town.
We've made it to his very primitive house.
He's decided he wants to come and see a bit more of his own country with us.
So we're off now and explore apparently the best way in Guatemala.
We've just finished our count-up.
We've challenged this kid in the restaurant next door to eat a sandwich that's bigger than his head.
If he can eat the sandwich, I'm going to buy him a drink.
He's turned the combi into a brothel.
Sleeps with a different dog under here every half an hour.
This is the village slug.
There's another one waiting its turn.
We were stoked to check out Guatemala's coast.
Because as not a lot of foreign tourists come here.
The people are really welcoming.
A love seed had already been sown for what would become our favourite Central American country.
But what was to happen in the next few episodes.
Will have a huge impact on not just this trip, but our lives.
Our Guatemalan adventure is just getting started.
Next time on Hasta Alaska.
We explore the cultural capital of Central America.
World heritage site Antigua.
Until then, happy travels.
Guys you are not going to believe what is coming up in this series.
It's a real life travel adventure drama.
That we couldn't make up if we tried.
Be sure to subscribe if you haven't already.
You do not want to miss this.
To come to Antigua with us in the next episode.
Click the box on the left.
But if I was you, I would choose the box on the right.
And see what happens when we get stuck for 5 days.
At the bottom of a volcano.
