Panda is one of the most adorable and popular animals in the world.
With a body made of contrasting black-and-white feathers and a curly tail that often makes people smile.
Pandareksasa, or its scientific name Ekelwiropeoda melanolucha,
includes in the family Beruang or Uesidae.
They are still related to the Beruang Tokelat, Beruang Hitam, and Beruang Kutu.
However, pandas have unique characteristics that make them different from other Beruang,
especially in terms of food and behavior.
Pandas are known as bamboo eaters.
About 99% of their food is made of bamboo,
although their digestive system is actually more like a carnivore.
This makes pandas have to eat a lot to meet their nutritional needs.
Adult pandas can spend 10 to 16 hours a day just to eat.
In a day, they can consume between 12 to 38 kilograms of bamboo.
Although it looks fat and slow, pandas actually have very strong muscles,
especially in their legs and front legs.
Their legs are able to break hard bamboo sticks easily.
In addition, they have a revolving wrist bone like a fake thumb
that helps them hold bamboo like humans hold food.
Pandas live in forested mountains in central China,
especially in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces.
They like cool and humid areas where bamboo grows abundantly.
Because of its limited habitat, pandas, including endemic animals,
are only found in one area in the world.
Pandas have a very calm lifestyle.
They rarely meet other pandas in the wild, except during mating season.
Pandas, including individual animals, have a hunting area of up to 6 km².
To mark their territory, pandas will scratch the grass
or smell the grass, especially on their tails.
One of the things that makes pandas unique is their way of communication.
They do not grunt like other birds,
but make sounds like a squeaking goat,
or sometimes sounds like soft holes.
Scientists have found that pandas have more than 10 different sounds
that are used to convey certain emotions and meanings,
starting from calling a partner, showing threats, and even playing.
Panda females are only fertile for 2-3 days a year,
making their chances of reproduction very small.
This is the main reason why the panda population has ever been endangered.
After mating, the panda's pregnancy lasts about 95 to 160 days,
and usually only gives birth to one child.
Sometimes they give birth to two, but one often does not survive,
because its mother can only take good care of one child.
A newly born panda is very small, weighing only about 100 grams,
or about 1 in 900 of the weight of its mother.
The baby panda is born blind, without feathers, and very weak.
The panda's mother will take care of it with love for about 18 months
before the baby begins to live on its own.
Pandas grow fast.
At the age of 6 months, they have begun to learn to eat bamboo,
and at the age of 2 years, they can find their own food.
Panda life in the wild can reach up to 20 years.
While in captivity, it can be longer, up to 35 years,
due to better care and nutrition.
Pandas are also known to have funny and quirky habits.
They often roll on the ground, play with stones,
or climb trees without a clear reason.
This makes pandas one of the most popular animals in the Mayan world,
because they often appear in funny videos on the Internet.
Although it looks peaceful, pandas are actually strong animals
and can be aggressive if they feel threatened.
They have sharp claws and extraordinary bite strength.
However, pandas rarely attack humans unless they are disturbed.
In Chinese culture, pandas are considered a symbol of peace and harmony.
Therefore, China often makes pandas as a diplomatic tool
known as Panda Diplomacy.
Countries that have a good relationship with China
often give pandas to be cared for in their zoo.
However, by law, pandas still belong to China.
The panda conservation program began in the 1980s
when their population in the wild decreased drastically
to less than 1,000 pandas.
The Chinese government and various world organizations
such as the WWF World Wide Fund for Nature
began major conservation efforts.
Now, thanks to this hard work,
the panda population in the wild has increased to more than 1,800 pandas
and their status has changed from threatened to tame.
Pandas are known to have unique fur patterns
that differ from one individual to another.
The black color around their eyes not only makes them look funny,
but also helps reduce light pollution
and becomes a visual communication tool between pandas.
