The zoo opened in 1895 and closed in 2002! Over the years it went through many renovations and changes. There were kangaroos, snow leopards, bears, exotic birds, seals and elephants! Nature now ironically takes over the zoo.
The zoo was never a big zoo, but a fantastic small zoo for families. There remains a Belle Isle Nature Center for your animal viewing fix.
Belle Isle struggles to maintain a lot of their facilities. Full of historic architecture, some of it closed or in disrepair, Belle Isle feels like you’re stepping back in time, but someone forgot to maintain the buildings.
It is still an amazing park but not up to its full potential. I love that historic structures are still there and haven’t been modernized. But I don’t love that a lot of the facilities have been shuttered and sit rotting. What do you think?

We have made it to Detroit. I'm at the
Bell Isle
Zoo. This aisle is
actually drivable. You can drive onto
the island and then you pay $11 for a
car. And then there's a bunch of
attractions on this island. And
um this is one of them. Abandoned Zoo.
I was at Bell
Isle 10 years ago. I never did go to the
abandoned zoo. I swam at the uh beach,
but I love this place. Bell Isle has
always been one of my favorite places.
Even though I was only here one
time, it just left a impression on me
that I never forgot. And it's just such
a cool
place. So, let's go walk around and see
what we can find. All right, this is the
outside of the zoo that you will see on
the street just driving
by. The way these huts are built is just
so
cool. This place closed in 2002.
This must have been where you bought
tickets, maybe.
All right, and we are in the
zoo. This is going to be so
cool. Check this out.
[Applause]
Oh wow.
Ow. You're never alone.
Is that a
bathroom? Oh, the graffiti here is
astonishing. Look at
this. Oh, I bet you this has been
stripped.
I know I have a commenter that always
says, "I want to hear you step on broken
glass." You're going to hear it in this
one. But thank you for all your support.
Every one of you actually all you guys
are
awesome. I have such
good
conversation going in my
comments about history of these places.
Bet this place was really
nice back in the
day. place.
It's really cool.
It is peaceful.
Yeah, there is some kind of zoo on this
island. Uh I think it's called like the
wildlife zoo or something. Oh wow.
But I don't think it's like this one
was.
What kind of animals did they have here?
I think they had like all the typical
like wild animals you see in a zoo like
the African ones and
stuff.
Um, comment below if you know what was
here. Let's go up here.
Oh, shoot. This floor is falling in. I
don't want to walk on
that. All these pipes.
Oh,
wow. This is talented.
Actually, the nature scene they painted,
not the graffiti,
but wait a minute.
Was this nature scene original to the
zoo and then they graffitied over it? Be
a be a shame if it was
[Applause]
There's a animal. What was that? A
gopher or something? He just
[Applause]
went down there somewhere. Like a beaver
or gopher or something.
Wow, it's an interesting room here. I
think this was like their maintenance
garage or
something. Look at these stairs.
There's nothing up here, but it's like
an
attic. Actually is very sturdy. Wow.
Really good.
Uh really good.
Yeah, they
um materials and
See craftsmanship.
They got all the 2x4s. They put all
those together and then they lifted it
up. Yeah.
And this is well
made. Oh
wow. Yeah. You know what? I don't know
if these plants, you know, maybe they
dumped them here, like maintenance
just kind of is storing some plants
here. Or were these left behind by the
zoo? They got tags on
them. White oak. Oh, cuz the these are
little
trees. Were these from the zoo or
what? It's like storage for
plants. Pin
oak. Another pin oak. Another pin oak.
I kind of feel like these might have
been dumped by maintenance here. Like
the orange barrels and
everything. Look at this
tree. That's the
miss. Oh, wow. There's definitely more
to
this.
Lockers. Is that a
bathroom.
Yeah, I can tell that the the zoo had
actual murals on here and that
people stupidly painted over them.
See the
art that they painted
[Applause]
on. I can't even tell what the art was
under this. I wish people would have
left this place alone.
because it would have looked way
cooler. Oh, there must have been animals
in
here. Wow.
I bench.
This is a different kind of
building. Look at all the glass.
Halloween
2020,
huh? Must have been another place they
kept animals.
[Applause]
This was a
garage. This little like thing like a
silo.
[Applause]
I don't know how big this zoo
is. Kind of seems like it's never
ending. Look at this. What is
that? This shed is not in good shape.
[Applause]
This is all woods back here.
All right, I found a way up
to the four
[Applause]
walk. All right, made it on top of the
boardwalk.
I don't know what to think of
this. Uh I'm like, did people actually
use this as a trash can? I'm kind of
glad they did, but at the same time, I'm
not. How sturdy this thing is,
though. Is this even sturdy? Just watch
where you're walking.
Just watch where you're walking.
Yeah, there was an animal in
there. Maybe monkeys, birds, maybe.
All right, and that will complete my
tour of the abandoned zoo on Bell
Isle. Hope you guys like this one. That
was so unique. I'm so glad I saw
it. When have you ever seen something
like this?
All right, I'll see you guys on the next
