When a father couldn't leave the hospital to attend his son's wedding, his care team at Penn Presbyterian brought the celebration to his bedside.
Well, grab the tissues, guys, because
it's no secret that watching your child
get married is a moment too special to
miss. So, when a father couldn't leave
his hospital room, his son came to him.
His care team at Penn Presbyterian
brought the celebration to his bedside.
>> It wasn't a wedding, but a bedside
blessing. With the help of his father's
medical team at Penn Presbyterian, Alan
Sweenenheiser surprised his dying father
with the gift of a lifetime. Just seeing
him and his reaction, it it was
everything.
>> Sweenenheiser getting emotional, sharing
his father had been battling an
infection in his lower body and to keep
it from spreading, both of his legs were
amputated. When they realized Harry
would not be able to attend the
September wedding in person, Allan and
the team of nurses worked to make sure
he could watch it via live stream. The
couple from Luzern County were getting
married two and a half hours away.
Initially, we went right to the idea of
doing a live stream um which proved to
be technically very challenging. So, I
got my whole IT department involved.
>> Nurse manager Julie Seaman says the next
day was the real surprise.
>> We had one of our nurses um you know
give him a shave and a haircut the day
before. We had one of the nurses made a
bineir. Uh we had got an outfit down for
him to wear.
>> So, our honeymoon we were going down to
New Jersey. So, we were just like, "We
have to pass Philly on the way to get
there." And we were just like, "Well,
why don't we just
>> stop and see them?"
>> A milestone moment that gave a father a
chance to witness his son's forever.
>> It there's nothing like it. It's why you
go into healthcare. It's why you help
people.
>> They were the, you know, the home away
from home. And it, you know, them being
able to pull this off just just made it
that much better.
>> Yeah. Truly the gift of a lifetime. And
Harry actually passed away two weeks
ago. So for him to be able to experience
this from his bedside in person before
he passed away, which was just
everything. Every time I think of it, I
get teary as you say it. Yeah. What a
tremendous moment for him and a lifetime
memory for the glad we got to experience
it.
>> Thanks for sharing that, Christie. Thank
you.
