We typically see our first inch of snow in the Springfield area on November 23rd.
Today was a cool and mostly cloudy
November day. And it even felt a lot
like winter.
>> Kind of looked like winter, too, with
the gray skies and no leaves on the
trees. No snow, though. 22 News Storm
Team meteorologist Adam Shco is working
for you with how it isn't that unusual
for us to see some snow this time of
year.
>> Well, Nick and Sierra, that's right. On
average, we get our first inch of
snowfall here in the Springfield area on
November 23rd.
It's been a fairly cool November with
temperatures only in the 40s recently.
And even though we haven't really seen
any accumulating snow here in the
Springfield area, it isn't that unusual
for us to get snow this time of year. In
2018, we had an early season snowstorm
on November 15th. That storm dumped over
7 ines of snow across western
Massachusetts. We also had snowstorms on
or around Thanksgiving Day. 11 years ago
back in 2014, heavy wet snow fell on the
day before Thanksgiving, one of the
busiest travel days of the year. And on
Thanksgiving Day in 1989, a snowstorm
dumped around 6 ines of snow across
western Massachusetts. The current snow
depth map shows that right now there is
just a little bit of snow on the ground
in far northwestern parts of the state,
but there is quite a bit of snow on the
ground right now in northern New
England, especially in Vermont.
Now, on average, we pick up about two
and a half inches of snow during the
month of November in the Springfield
area. working for you. I'm 22 News Storm
Team meteorologist Adam Stremco.
