At the very beginning of the 9th century, a few Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Flavigny,
about 15 km from Seumur, settled in Seumur-en-Oxoua, outside the castle and built a first church,
dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, around which the city will develop.
At the end of the 12th and early 13th centuries, thanks to several donations,
a new church was built, in the style of Gothic architecture.
Thus, the construction began in the 1220s,
beginning with the apse with its three shining chapels and the detour before continuing with the heart,
the transept and the first traveys of the nave.
This first large construction campaign spread until the 1240s.
Three traveys were added to the nave in the second half of the 13th century
with a completion at the level of the portal at the beginning of the 14th century,
characteristic of the flamboyant architecture.
