I bet you know what's happening.
Welcome back to Snow Dogs Cooking where if I can cook it, so can you!
Today we're doing something super easy.
So 4th of July is coming up and I wanted to make something kind of 4th of July themed.
Like something red, white and blue.
Something that you could make and take to a party with you or a gathering with your family
or make just for fun because it's a holiday.
So today we're making poke cake.
I don't think I have made a poke cake in 20 years.
I think the last time I made one was when Jamie and I were living together
in the very first house we ever lived in.
And I remember really liking it and thinking, oh we should do more of these.
And then I don't think we ever did.
So that's a long time.
Let's make one and see if it's as good as we remember.
We're kind of going to go easy with this recipe.
You could make your own white cake mix.
I'm just using a standard box white cake.
You want white.
Doesn't matter what kind of white.
If you want French vanilla, as long as the cake is white.
This one's from Aldi.
So I got white cake mix.
So you're going to need a white cake mix.
You're going to need a red jello and a blue jello.
Doesn't matter what flavors.
Whatever flavors you want.
I went with cherry and the berry blue
because they were literally out of every other blue color of jello at my store.
You're going to need some frosting.
Let me explain something.
So most people will put cool whip or like a whipped cream frosting on top of this.
I'm not a fan of that.
So I'm using a standard frosting.
Again, you could make your own if you want to.
But I'm using a standard cream cheese frosting.
Your frosting should be white or white-ish just so the colors look right.
So as I said, standard cream cheese frosting.
This is my favorite type of frosting.
Sprinkles.
Some red, white and blue sprinkles.
Sprinkles of your choice.
You can also use blueberries and strawberries for a topping.
But I'm using sprinkles.
You are going to need some spray for your pan.
We are using a 9x13 pan.
And then you're going to need everything that your box cake says you need.
So like I need eggs and I need vegetable oil for my box cake.
Oh and then you're going to need something to poke holes in it.
I always found that a wooden spoon works pretty good for this.
You could also use something smaller depending on how many holes you want to put in it.
I think we're going to attempt it with the wooden spoon.
That's everything you're going to need.
Let's get to making some cake.
Again, bake it to the box directions.
Mine says preheat the oven to 350.
So that's what we're going to do.
The oven's on.
We should probably check on third best kitchen helper ever.
The oven's on, I know.
And you know what the worst part is?
There's not really much in this recipe you can try.
So I guess I'm going to have to give you some treats.
Not yet though.
Not yet.
Don't worry.
You don't have to come in there.
I know the oven is terrifying.
So again, like I said, bake to your cake's directions.
If you're using a box cake, I need five egg whites and a half a cup of vegetable oil
and one and a quarter cup of water.
So we're going to get all that together.
Five egg whites in my bowl.
I totally forgot we're going to have egg yellows.
So I just mixed those up and I'm going to cook those up for the dogs.
They will definitely enjoy that.
Next, again according to the box, half a cup of vegetable oil
and one and a quarter cup of water.
Add your cake mix.
And now we have our handy dandy hand mixer.
This is my KitchenAid hand mixer.
I love this one.
And we're going to mix this till it's like cake batter.
Just like that.
Now we're going to spray our pan with the pan baking spray.
This stuff works great.
That's why I use it.
Pour your cake mix into your greased pan.
Now into the oven for whatever your box says.
Mine says 29 to 30 minutes.
So into the oven it goes.
All right, our cake is done.
I did the toothpick check.
It came out clean and also I heated up those egg yolks for the dogs.
Would you like some egg yolk?
Are you ready?
It's gonna be delicious!
Oh man!
Oh look at that bite!
Oh hi! Where'd you come from?
She's like, um me too.
I would also like some egg yolks please.
Thank you.
Ready?
Is that delicious?
She's like, whoa!
Did you come in here?
Oh my goodness!
Well the oven is off because the cake is done.
Ready?
Oh she's like, heck yeah I want egg yolks!
Is that good stuff?
Yeah?
All right, well I said you were gonna get nothing but uh I was wrong.
You're getting some...
You got something!
You got some egg yolks.
Now comes the fun part!
We gotta let the cake cool.
So and I'm not taking it out of this pan because it's a poke cake.
I'm leaving it in this pan.
If you flip it over onto a pan and then do it you could risk the jello going everywhere.
So it's staying in that pan.
Gotta let it completely cool.
Oh look! You're back!
Oh look! The cake is cool!
Okay so make sure your cake is cool before you do this next part.
Like I said.
Now we're gonna go ahead and poke the holes in the cake.
This seems a little bit big to me but when you actually like poke down it's not that big.
So we're kind of just gonna poke a bunch of holes in the cake.
Spread them out and then what I like to do is when I do the next row I kind of like alternate
where they were and just keep on poking.
It doesn't have to be perfect.
Look! A bunch of holes in the cake.
Probably bigger than they needed to be but we're rolling with it.
We're just gonna roll with it.
Now we're gonna make our jello but we're not gonna make it according to the box.
We're gonna do one cup of boiling water and a half a cup of cold water
because we want it to be more like the jello jigglers not the standard jello.
You're not gonna eat the jello.
Sorry!
So I'm gonna mix everything in here.
There's a few different ways you can do this once it's full.
You can use this and you can kind of try to pour.
That can be a little bit of a pain.
You can also use a straw.
So you can stick a straw down in here put your finger on it put in there
or if you have like a little squeeze bottle like this here you can do that
and then you just fill the holes which I will show you after I make my jello.
Pour your boiling water in and then mix until it's dissolved.
That's gonna be a really pretty blue color.
Once it's all dissolved add the half a cup of cold water.
I added a little bit of ice too.
Now stir all this.
Now like I said you could try to pour from here into here but I'm gonna put it in this bottle.
And now the moment of truth!
Put it in the holes.
It's kind of hard to do one-handed but I'm gonna alternate blue
and then I'll do red and then we'll do blue.
So yeah like that.
This is real life.
I messed up.
When you poke your holes be careful not to poke them all the way through
because as soon as you do the jello in the hole is gonna go all the way through to the bottom
which is what happened in a few of my holes.
Then I got frustrated and I just poured all of it over top of this.
Now here's what we're gonna do.
I don't want to waste this and I still want to give you guys a fun video
and I could remake this and not show you guys my mistake
but like I said this is real life.
This is what happens when I mess things up.
So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna put this in the fridge for about three hours
I'm gonna let that jello turn to jello
then I'm gonna make the red jello and I'm gonna pour it right over top
and let it seep down into the holes that are there.
If you want to do it the right way alternate the colors
don't poke your holes all the way down into the bottom of the cake
which apparently I did with a few of mine.
Oops!
So that's what we're gonna do.
I'm gonna put this in the fridge and then we'll continue on and see if we can save this.
Alright we're gonna try this.
My cake is in the fridge.
We're gonna go ahead and make the cherry jello and then add it.
Cake's been in the fridge for about four hours.
Are you assuming your position?
She's like oh we're doing this again?
I will come nap in here.
She was napping so hard in the other room
I didn't think she'd even notice I was in here.
Oops forgot to film it.
Add your boiling water to your jello mixture and get it all dissolved.
Alright I added my cold water with a little bit of ice
which looks like it already melted.
And now we're just gonna hope for the best
and I'm just gonna start pouring.
I'm kind of gonna pour slowly to try to at least hit the holes.
As you can see it's kind of going everywhere.
Okay it's working.
Alright we'll just make it fun like this.
Yeah I don't think this is gonna work.
I guess we'll see.
I'll put it in the fridge for four hours and see what happens.
Are you laughing at my mess?
I don't know if this is gonna work but we're gonna frost it
and I'm kind of gonna pack a little bit of the frosting in the hole.
I'm using cream cheese frosting because that's what I like.
I don't like Cool Whip.
Cool Whip would be simple to put on here
but I do not like Cool Whip for frosting on a cake.
So we're gonna use this and see what it looks like.
Okay we successfully frosted the cake.
Now we're gonna put some sprinkles on it.
Moment of truth.
We gotta cut a slice out of this and see what it looks like.
Oh my gosh!
It actually worked!
I thought for sure we were making another cake tonight.
So my accidental mess up...
Well I mean we gotta taste it still.
But my accidental...
Look at that!
That's red, white and blue!
I cut another piece out of it.
It actually worked.
I thought...
See how that's a little purple there?
I thought the whole inside was gonna end up purple
because I really thought I messed it up.
So apparently if you do it this way it works as well.
Or like I said, take your time and poke the holes less and things like that.
Oh hey it's time to take the cake out of the fridge.
I mean I have no idea if this is gonna be good.
Oh it's gonna be delicious.
It's very jello-y and cake-y and frosting-y.
It's a lot of sugar.
It's cherry and berry blue and vanilla cake and cheesecake frosting.
It tastes like Fort DeLoy.
It tastes like Fort...
It tastes like a Fort DeLoy!
No, it tastes like them...
Bottle bomb pops?
Yes!
Yeah, that's because that's the flavor.
Is it?
Yeah!
Yeah, that's exactly what it tastes like.
Really?
That's good.
All right, well...
So do the thing, huh?
Do the thing.
I guess it's a win.
So not gonna lie, I was ready to restart this entire video.
Like we had it all figured out.
We're like this ain't gonna work.
We're gonna have to redo the whole thing.
I messed it up and I didn't...
I didn't...
I did, but I didn't.
That was delicious and because it's got so much stuff in it, cut smaller slices.
Jello poke cake.
How fun is that?
All right you guys, we hope you enjoyed today's video.

We're all done cooking, honey.
And it says, I have assumed my position in the kitchen.
How about we go O-U-T-S-I-D-E and then we go for a W-A-L-K?
How does that sound?
Sound good?
We're all done cooking for the day.
Thanks best kitchen helper ever.
She's like, I'm pretty good.
