Oh my god, this one is great.
This is definitely my go-to.
I think it's probably one of the best.
Shioh Pan in Singapore, I would say.
Everything that we do here, we bake,
we make, are things that we will
feed our own family and friends.
Strawberry shortcake, or chocolate cake
You know, these are the flavors that
Most parents would ask for their children.
And it's such a waste because
We have so many amazing flavors
in the Southeast Asian context
Things like pandan, gula melaka.
We decided, you know, we're going to be
a little bit different. We're going to focus
Into the cakes.
We'd tell customers, like, okay,
if you're ordering for a young child,
then try the onde-onde because
They're familiar with, you know, pandan.
Gula melaka is that
sweet flavor. True enough,
along the way, parents will
Come back and say that
Actually, their child loves it.
That cake. And there are some kids, even
To this day, the parents will say, "My kid"
Only eats the onde-onde cake.
We also have kopi kaya peanut butter.
And I feel that's very Singaporean.
flavor because how we
came up with that flavor was
Me and Jiaming,
our standard breakfast at some point
Was the Yakun set F?
So at the time, Yakun set F
Kaya peanut butter
toast set. Then we have it
for free. And so we decided,
You know, we should turn this into a cake. We love it so much.
A funny story is,
we actually started calling this cake
the Yakun set F.
It was a very good cake to sell because
People love Yakun, right?
One day, very kindly, the yakun
people came to us and said,
It sounded something like, oh, we're very honoured.
that you've named it, but it's actually
Copyright, so I think you need to change the name.
So we changed it to peanut butter kaya.
I met
my
wife, Jiaming. She was
My senior at university. One day
she wanted to learn how to make
a no-bake item
through a mutual friend. She wasn't
Ready to meet new people
but I came along and from there
we continued having these little
meetups. Jiaming and I felt like
There was excellent chemistry.
Funny thing is, we studied chemistry.
at university. We were not
together at all. We were friends for the
the longest time. I definitely harboured
feelings for her but she was always
attached. Her
At that time, it was part of the business.
Initially. In 2017, she felt
like her relationship wasn't going anywhere
and a very close friend of ours
watched a Taiwan drama and
She showed it to Jiaming.
The Taiwanese drama is about this guy and this.
girls who are best friends but they have
never gotten together. The guy
In the drama, his name is Da Ren.
So it's really very obvious.
So when she finally broke up with me, I told her
that I want to spend the rest of my life with her
because I think it was four years into the business
We did everything together. I just
knew that this is the person that I wanted
to spend my life together with
so in 2018, I think around
Chinese New Year, we got together.
Two months later, we decided to get
Married. It was very quick.
We were so sure of each other, and we got married.
the following year, 2019
January. We have always
known for our cakes and our customers
Love the cakes, but when we moved into Jiu
About four years ago
ago in 2022, having a
space here, knew that
coffee and bread would
also be another
a piece of the puzzle that
We are missing out. So we started to
do bread. One day, we
went to Korea because my
her sister-in-law at that time, she
was living in Korea. Everyone was
saying, you must try this salt bread and I'm not
someone who likes to fall into
a trend, so I really resisted
trying the salt bread but I went to
Korea and I tried the
Salt bread, and it was nice.
But I felt it was very heavy.
I kept thinking about this because I felt
like the salt bread is still
like that Asian counterpart to
A French croissant, right?
And it's very Asian because it's soft.
People like things that are soft and fluffy.
I decided to try.
and make my own version of
the salt bread, the siu pan
and I really love
the final product. I tried many
different times and I felt like, okay,
Not buttery enough, or not? It's too oily.
and I came across this recipe
that I feel is what represents
Me. Then we started to put it out.
Since then, it has been
One of the products that our customers keep coming back for.
So they buy it in bulk or they
Just buy it for their breakfast that day
and I think it's just like a testament to
How much they enjoy the baked goods
that they will come back every day. I work
around here and
Olsen is my everyday breakfast, so I
I'd just have one garlic siu pan.
and ice chocolate to go.
I think one of the best, probably
Siu Pan in Singapore, I would say.
Oh my god.
I like this one better. To me,
because
I like its very buttery taste.
and at the same time
a little bit salty but
both buttery
and salty
taste complement each other
and I think what I really like
about this is also that it's very
soft. It's kind of soft that
I don't know, like a melt-in-your-mouth kind of sensation.
So I would rate
This is my number one.
This is definitely my go-to because
I like butter.
For the siu pan, I think it was
Actually really good already
compared to some other places where I have eaten.
Because some places I tried, it's a bit
oily
I feel it. But this doesn't have
that greasy feeling. It feels a bit
healthy. I really try my
Best to get up by 4:30
and in the shop around 5, we start
making our breads first. Then
We can focus on the cakes.
We also decided when we would have kids.
that we are going to slow things down
Down. It's just me who's going to work.
She's going to stay home and take care of the kids.
We are also homeschooling.
The kids and I think that ties into
mindful baking and slow
alive because life is just
Too hectic. It's too much.
to try and follow where society
expects us to be. Mindful baking
which ties into what we
do things with heart. Whatever we do is
what I would be confident about
to give to my friends and family.
In 2019,
We were expecting our
first and
he was due sometime in June but
in May, two days after
one of the regular
checkups, his heart stopped.
So at thirty-three and a half weeks,
we were going into
a weekend where we had
wedding orders and wedding cakes because
Our customers trust us.
So we can't just say, "I'm so sorry."
I can't do this right.
So that silver lining
during that period was knowing
that we had such a
a solid support system through
our friends and people in the industry
that they came
Together and they helped us
to complete our orders.
And those were the two weekends when
We had to go to the hospital, make sure.
Everything was okay and also induce.
The baby out.
Humanity can always come together
no matter what kind of challenge you face. So when
You face a challenge, we always
just leave it to God and
we see how His hand
is always there to guide us
Sending angels
to us and we always receive
so many, so many angels
during different
difficult periods in our lives
We have always believed that
whatever we do is
I think first of all, to be human, to be kind
To be generous, right? And things
will always come back to us
From our family to yours.
So everything that we do here
We bake, we make
things that we will feed our own family
and friends. Not thinking about
How much money can I make from this?
but who is going to benefit
From this. That's why we also have something like
the gluten-free products, the things
that are allergen-free
cakes because
It might not bring us that.
huge amount of sales
but I think it helps people
celebrate together with
their loved ones who might
not be able to enjoy
a regular cake that contains eggs and wheat
and things like that. Even
though we see others
businesses open up, right? But I
Look at these people as equals.
in the industry. I don't really think of them
as competitors because we always do
different things. There is no two
businesses that do exactly the same thing.
Working in a
mindset of abundance always
makes you feel a lot better than working
in a mindset of scarcity
where you're always afraid, like, okay, is this person
Going to steal my recipe? Is this person going to copy?
Me? But thinking about it and
Humans are good, humans are kind.
Humans are generous. It helps.
us also focus and do
Well, in what we do and do not do
bothered by everything outside
Kindness, honesty,
integrity
Love and respect.
I think these are very fundamental values.
that I try to do
as all our things that
We do. So I look at the next
five years, right, and it's
For me, I
go back to how we can maintain
quality and it's still
one shop, one location
and I'm still going to be here
all the time. Customers will always
Still see me and ensure
that we can create products
that people will
like, will love, will
want to keep coming back to
keep serving the people who are in
the area and helping
People celebrate together.
