We are learning more about the suspect Cole Allen- who was staying at the same hotel as the White House Correspondents' Dinner.
Topping this morning, we are learning more about the moments leading up to the shooting
at the White House Correspondents Dinner.
It comes as President Trump, in a new interview, detailed the chaos when the gunman opened
fire.
ABC's Lionel Moise is tracking the latest developments from the New York Bureau.
Law enforcement officials telling ABC News they believe the suspect in the White House
Correspondents Dinner shooting used a stairwell out of public view moments before launching
his attack.
Officials say 31-year-old Cole Allen left his hotel room in the Washington Hilton, the
same hotel as the Correspondents Dinner, with a duffel bag containing multiple weapons.
He was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.
They say he went down 10 flights of stairs, and then, he's seen here, sprinting by Secret
Service personnel.
A burst of gunfire followed, before he was tackled on the floor, seen here shirtless
after the confrontation.
He was fast.
When you look at it, it's almost like a blur.
President Trump describing to 60 Minutes how the chaos unfolded.
We heard a big bang, and it was either a gunshot, or it was a tray of dishes, which happens
a lot in ballrooms.
And I was hoping it was a tray, but it wasn't.
The President and First Lady, at that moment, were speaking with the evening's entertainer,
Oz Perlman, Perlman telling our Jonathan Karl he came face-to-face with President Trump
on the floor.
I go, in my head, I go, oh, no, are we about to die?
That was my first thought.
And then, a split second later, I'm looking at him, and I can't gauge from him what happened
to him.
So you thought he was shot.
So I didn't know if he was shot, but I did not rule it out.
This as new details emerge about the suspect, Cole Allen, a Caltech engineering grad working
as a tutor in Southern California, named Teacher of the Month in 2024.
Officials say Allen took a train from L.A. to Washington before checking in Saturday.
Sources say he sent his family a message before the attack, describing him as a man of honor.
