I'm kind of making fun of you. It was a song. Okay. Yeah. No, I mean, I assumed so,
but 92 today, 100 tomorrow and 100 on thursday. Yes, I know you're reading
that right. I'm sorry. Another round of heat here. We'll cool it down for the
weekend, but storm is back by saturday. Okay, thanks so much talking versa.
We'll send it over to you. All right, thanks so much Jacqueline and Tucker.
He has to put on his pajamas too. He's understanding that Simon, he's going to
join us in just a bit. Today is a day of rest and relaxation on the Marissa
Mitchell show. I got mary beth, I got Ashley and I have chloe. You ladies
ready? We need this. You're ready. Thanks for tuning in. Come to the
Marissa Mitchell show and I invite you to relax and enjoy the entire hour. I
will. I'm already taking it easy on pajamas. No need to wipe your screen.
I did in fact switch it up. This is a first and I'm also giving you the
permission to find rest peace in your own way in the middle of all the
business that I know we have to deal with on the daily. It is time to excel.
So we have some people on the show today to teach you, teach me how to do
just that. Like our first guest on this day of R. And R. Reverend dr Xena jock.
She's a nationally renowned expert on spirituality and rest. In fact, she's
going to break down what she calls the sacred pause and how you can find it.
Scan the QR code to send her a question or a comment. She's going to join us
live and take your messages later in the show. Then we're going to take an
even deeper dive live with a sound bath. It's a first for me as well, but I hear
those vibes are soothing to the mind, body and spirit. So I can't wait to
share. Then we're going to round the hour out with some calming drinks to
level out the mood will be in the kitchen with some tea recipes that will
only take a few minutes. First, though, I learned the power of breaks and
inner work during this year's power 50 women of influence reception. That's in
D. C. U. S. Black Chambers. They honored women, including tennis icon
Serena Williams, media mogul Easter Ray, celebrity chef, good friend of our
show, Carla Hall for their impact, all of them representing resilience,
excellence and purpose. And now I have women joining me on the show today. My
guests who have all of those qualities. But, ladies, we are not machines. We
can't pour from an empty cup. So I'm so glad to welcome you all on for the
entire hour. I got Chloe. I got Mary Beth Olsen. Listen, we are on live
television.
You waited
matching set.
Oh, I love you. Oh, we're selected for a reason. We're so happy on the couch.
Ladies, we're on the
night.
I know they'll be quiet. Yeah, girls meet in pajamas. It's like instant
friendship. It's just back to slumber party.
Off the bat.
You all are busy, too, with work, with family. So I thought we could all
benefit from jump right in. You are actually guest co host today, too. So
get your
our first guest is all about sharing the best ways to recharge. Let the
church say Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. She has a guy that's called the sacred
pause. Pastor, writer, thought leader, Reverend Dr Xena Jacques is back. Thank
you for taking out the time for us today. We appreciate it. I'm so delighted
and honored to be with you, and I wish I was in my pajamas. But you know what?
You're in a hotel room, so you're still getting your relaxation. And I know you
have a conference that's going on, so I certainly appreciate it. Doctor, this
is Chloe. This is Mary Beth and Ashley. They have questions as well. But I want
to start with this sacred pause. What is it? And how does it work? I kept
running into people who said to me they were struggling to find a way to enter
their day to find a way to just breathe. And I created this. It's such a
surprise to me how well it's done over 200,000 followers. It's about a 90
minute pause in the morning, and it's not a to do list. It is not a get
better. It's to just stop, breathe in, see yourself as divine and powerful and
situate yourself with wisdom to go into your day. Some people listen to it in
the evening, but it is a moment to order your self by first being a human
being before you are a human doing. You be before you do.
To Dr. Jacques and I had a friend of mine say this the other day that slow is
the new fast, which is essentially saying we're all busy all the time.
We're always plugged in that sometimes you're afraid to get off the wheel that
you'll get left behind. But taking that moment, even the one you just mentioned
can actually give you more momentum to get through the day. I wanted you all to
jump in here. Ashley, you want to go first? You know I love a slow morning.
You get up hours early so you before the world gets busy while it's still dark to
meditate, have a have a slow cup of coffee. You know, you could sip coffee
for 40 minutes and just read and just get into yourself before the world gets
into you, right? Do you have a question for Dr. Jacques here? Anything you've
been dealing with? I have a question. I feel guilty when I slow down and relax.
Wow. How can I not feel guilty about it and instead realize that it's actually
helping me do more and be more successful? Thank you for that honesty.
And one of the things I want to say is most of us as women did not see other
women slow down. My mother was up when I got up. She was up when I went to bed
and the only time she took a nap was at a red light. We just never watched other
women relax. And so we don't have good role models. So the first way I tell you
to not be guilty is that you are being a role model for those other women who are
watching you. We have to break the generational curse and understand that
we are supposed to rest. The other way to not feel guilty is to know that your
body was designed by a divine hand to rest. If we don't rest, we don't have the
wherewithal. We don't have the space. Even your computer products have to rest,
turn them off, rest once in a while to recalibrate. So the way you don't feel
guilty is, and I don't know if you think of the biblical writ as literature or
sacred text, but in Exodus 31, it says rest because it's holy. Rest because you
were designed to rest. And if you don't, what you're saying is that I am smarter
than the one who created me.
You don't have to earn our rest.
No, I love that. I have a question. What about people who, like myself, do not have
the luxury of having that 90 minutes in the morning? I have two little kids,
we're waking up, we're making lunches, we're getting out the door, and then I'm
right into my workday. Can we flip it and make it an evening of rest?
Absolutely. And if I said 90 minutes, it's not. It's 90 seconds.
Oh, 90 seconds.
It's under two minutes always. And that was the point, that we wanted it to be a
taste. But yes. So I want to say that when we think of rest, we often think of the
cessation of activity, because that's the primary definition of rest. Even in the
cessation of activity. But my dear sisters, there are more ways to rest. There are 11
different words in the biblical writ that our English translates as rest, but I want
to talk about four of them. The first one is Sabbath. That one way to rest is to the
ceasing of activity. Like Ashley said, sip your coffee for 45 minutes. Stop all the
other activity. But the second way to rest is, I'm just using the Hebrew words
here. The second way to rest is saquat. And you know what that means? It means to
rest from internal worry. So when I worry, and I can't stop, I take river stones, and
I write what I'm worrying on the river stone, and I throw it in a pile in my
backyard. I just want to move it out of me. I want to rest from the anxiousness and
the breathing. Oh, sound baths. I do one almost every Monday night. The sound bath
is a wonderful way to rest from that internal anxiety, because you're quieting
your mind. So rest from activity, rest from internal anxiety or internal fear. But my
dear sisters, my favorite is nuach, the Hebrew word nuach. You know what it means? It
means rest from external activity. That means resting from those people who call you and
work your last nerve. That means resting from God. When you see that name, you are
not required. So nuach is resting from those things that come and interrupt your
peace. And know if it's your boss or somebody else, you may not be able to rest from them
all the time. But give yourself 30 minutes when you say, I am not going to welcome
anything that messes with my nuach, with my resting from the external. Gosh, you got to
get it and fire really on all cylinders. Dr. Jacques, you're going to hang around with us. We got more of this. Good word. Thank you. Oh my gosh, I feel so
good already. And we're only 10 minutes in. And I want you all to send in your questions, your
comments. Our sisters here, they got their questions in for Dr. Jacques. Just scan that QR
code on the screen. She's going to answer those a little bit later in the show. We cannot
let her go.
Version of the hot sheet and something to really think about is retail therapy, real self-care. We're going to break down if it's worth spending money, even splurging to protect, protect your
peace. Plus sounds have more power than you think. You just heard that from Dr. Jacques. We're going to have that live sound bath to lower stress a little bit later. We'll be right back.
I'm looking for forty-six.
I'm hot and not. It cannot be the sole goal, but I think it's okay to want to look and feel younger. There's nothing wrong with that.
My question, though, is dipping into your savings or borrowing money you don't have for self-care, is that hot or not?
It's an investment and a necessity to do what you do. I understand the hot. I understand it.
I'm with you 100% there. I think if you don't have the means, then it's a not. If you're breaking the bank that you don't have, that's a not. Feeling your best is always a hot.
This is what I think. I do my trainer every Wednesday. I go to the gym. I do all the things. I take care of myself. But I have to think of future Envy.
If I'm talking future Envy, how is that not self-care? Self-care means having enough money in the bank to take care of your priorities because I might look fabulous, but if I can't pay my mortgage, I'm going to be stressed.
So to me, I have reframed because trust me, I've been guilty of shopping and buying jewelry and doing all the things. But at the same time, that is the way I'm taking care of myself and my family and my husband and he's taking care of me.
And so it's the whole package.
Yeah, well, let me know if a pretty picture will pay the bills.
I want it all.
We all deserve it all.
And they'll deserve the massages.
They should be having them right now too.
Speaking of which, I have a massage tonight.
See? See?
Massages.
For years, hustle culture, we hear it all the time. It's been celebrated. Long hours, the idea that being busy is part of being successful.
But health experts say that mindset comes at a cost as well.
Working without enough time to rest, recharge, it can increase stress, disrupt your sleep, lead to burnout.
We know this, but my question is, is hustle culture at least good for a season of life?
Of course, you can't do it your whole life, but are there some seasons where you need a little hustle culture to get over?
I gotta say yes.
That's how I got to the day of rest.
I was thinking that as everyone's talking about resting, I'm like, because these are all high-performing women.
They're all women who are doing their thing and doing it strong and going in with full force.
There is a season for that, but there's also a counterbalance that we have to achieve.
And if we don't, we cannot be there.
We will be tired in our meetings.
We will be, you know, yawning in our kids' basketball games.
We have to have that self-care in order to perform.
Yeah, and also stress kills.
It kills, right?
It can take you out if you want to get anything done.
If you don't.
All right, when you say the ladies, these four ladies, we need some manly energy.
I'm here to relax.
There he is.
Now, true confession, this is not what I wear to bed.
If you want to see what I really wear to bed.
Okay, I won't do it to you.
I promise.
Also, I have a confession.
I look much better at 25 than I look today.
I don't know what happened.
Woke up one day and all of a sudden I looked old.
Do I look relaxed?
Yeah, you do.
It's afternoon, about 90, so we will be very warm.
And then, unfortunately, a heat wave again.
You won't need all that or you'll need air conditioning.
That's true.
Keep you cool here.
It'll be about 100 both Wednesday and Thursday.
Okay.
Yeah, triple digit heat.
That will ruin my sleep for sure.
We're marking rest and relaxation day by rolling out the yoga mat.
In fact, they're being rolled out as we speak.
Learn some simple moves to reduce tension and also to find some balance.
Scan the QR code on your screen.
Remember Dr. Jacques.
She's hanging around on the other side of the break.
She's going to take your questions and comments.
Welcome back to rest and relaxation day on the Marisa Mitchell Show.
I have my guest host, Ashley Demme, Chloe Kaplan, Mary Beth Olsen.
Thank you ladies for coming.
I want to bring back on Reverend Dr. Zina Jacques.
Thank you for hanging on the show with us.
Ashley has a question about rest.
I have to do it.
Is it normal to schedule rest?
I will change in my car.
I go to three to four even today.
I will change in my car.
I'll do makeup in the car.
I'm eating.
I'm always rushing.
I have to schedule rest.
Have you heard that before?
Is that normal?
Absolutely.
In fact, it's one of the tricks.
You put it in your calendar as if it's a meeting.
A meeting with my own soul.
When someone tries to get in that space, you say,
Oh, there's a meeting on my calendar.
Oh, you're telling the truth.
A meeting with myself.
A meeting with my soul.
You cannot be late.
You cannot reschedule.
Period.
Do not reschedule.
For people who are watching, we have about 60 seconds.
What's one thing they can do today to begin that sacred pause
that you talk about?
Set five minutes on your clock.
Go in the bathroom.
Lock the door.
Turn off the light.
Spray a scent that you like.
And breathe deeply.
Okay.
I feel all of it.
Did you want to speak to yourself?
I did.
Yes.
I'm going to lock the door in the bathroom.
And where can we all stay connected to you to get all these good
recommendations and advice?
I welcome you to come to Instagram and just my name, Zena Jacques,
but the whole thing is at beacons.ai backslash Zena Jacques.
And she is an incredible follow.
There are so many.
How is she in my head?
And I see one of her videos.
We appreciate you.
Just being a thought leader really in this space.
It's sad to say,
but I think we're at the point where rest is like revolutionary.
It's something we don't really think about.
So thank you for getting us back centered again.
We appreciate it.
Well,
if you've been looking for an excuse to slow down,
today could be your day.
Up next,
we're going to do some yoga.
Grab your mats and join us for that.
And from sights to sounds,
we're going to have a live sound bath.
We're going to talk about those good vibes and how those sound vibrations can
help us all heal.
Stay with us.
Well,
there's no better way to unwind.
And with a little movement and mindfulness,
whether you're a seasoned or trying for the first time yoga,
I think we all love yoga up in here,
up in here can help reduce stress and prove flexibility and leave you
feeling refreshed.
So today I have Tiara of Yogi TB and also the student,
Leslie.
I think you both are probably instructor or advanced levels.
At least we're all in this together.
Let's talk about yoga in general and why it's so important for anybody in
anybody.
I feel like it's a way to first ground yourself.
Hence my grounded mat.
And it's also a time to like,
slow down,
be restful.
And Sierra always leads me in the right direction when I need to be grounded.
Okay.
How did you first find yoga?
Oh,
wow.
It was my gym credit.
My freshman year at Penn state.
I wanted a class that I can BS in.
Back then in 2008,
nobody was doing yoga.
Only person I knew that did it was my uncle.
And I was like,
let me try it.
And I fell in love with it.
It was challenging,
not flexibility,
but just being vulnerable in a space where I didn't know anybody.
And I was the only student of color in the room.
So it was just like,
okay,
I can be in this space.
I deserve to be here.
And so I've been practicing 18 years and I've been teaching for 10 years,
10 plus years.
Incredible.
Yeah.
Okay.
So before we get to some simple moves and everybody's game,
we're going to do them.
In what ways does yoga improve you?
Not just your body,
but your mind.
Oh,
wow.
Um,
so like Leslie said,
it grounds you.
It can,
if you're somebody who feels anxious or you get worked up a lot,
simple breathing techniques can just calm you down,
activate your parasympathetic nervous system,
take you out of fight or flight,
you know,
or freeze.
And,
you know,
it just brings clarity because sometimes I know I make impulsive decisions.
Sometimes you're not alone,
but you know,
if you just sit and just pause for a moment and just take a breath and just
feel what's going on in your body.
Like if there's something that's not make,
making you feel a little uneasy,
like listen to that gut,
listen to your gut.
That's your second brain.
They like to say you're done in 10.
So follow that intuition.
Listen to your gut before you make a decision.
So,
check in.
All right.
So show us some moves.
Ladies,
you jump in here with questions,
but have some fun.
Okay.
So we're going to start just laying on our backs.
We're just going to ground ourselves really quick.
You're going to bring the soles of your feet to touch.
Let your knees fall towards this.
Cause I have all these boxes,
the technology towards the long edges of the mat.
You're going to bring your left hand to your heart,
your right hand to that space beneath your belly button,
and just let your shoulders be soft on the mat.
Slightly tuck your chin.
And we're just going to do a quick,
simple body scan,
starting from the soles of your feet,
taking notice of how you feel mentally,
spiritually,
physically,
and emotionally with every breath as you work your way.
Ashley,
Chloe,
are you all feeling any areas of concern?
The price just went up,
y'all.
I feel it in my heels.
And probably because I've been wearing heels.
So now that we've checked in,
what's next?
Alright,
so we're going to bring our hands to the outside of our knees.
Draw your feet on the mat.
Bring your knees in towards each other.
We're just going to do a simple low back release.
So we're going to bring our arms down by our side,
palms facing down.
Take a nice full inhale here.
And open mouth,
exhale,
sigh it out.
Beautiful,
ladies.
On your next inhale,
we're pressing all our weight into the soles of our feet.
Lift your hips up towards the ceiling for a bridge.
Don't worry about fully extending.
And exhale,
slowly peel yourself back down to the mat.
I want the viewers to know I can go higher than I'm going.
I'm trying to keep it cute.
We're going to keep going for five,
four,
Wow.
This is also building up the core,
though.
We should say that.
And it's so important to have a strong core.
and a strong trunk.
Yes.
Yeah.
And one,
peel yourself back down.
We're going to hug our knees into our chest.
Show yourself the most love you've shown yourself this week thus far.
Oh,
I forgot.
I got the mic on my back.
Yeah.
Cause if I move the wrong way,
I won't be able to hear anything.
But yes,
yes,
this is good.
All right.
So then we're going to just rock front to back,
find our way to a seat coming to all fours,
to a tabletop.
So where do you offer your classes?
Honestly,
you know,
we're manifesting a studio for me.
So,
but I,
I teach all over literally go to people.
Yes.
So I travel to people.
I host events.
Activations in Maryland,
DC,
Virginia.
You know,
I do retreats all over,
had my last retreat in Bali in April.
what do you think about hot yoga?
Okay.
So
not the hair.
No,
I have,
you know,
I love it.
I love a heated flow,
a heated Vinyasa.
But so I used to do big room yoga,
like six days a week at four years straight at one point in my life.
And then I was like,
okay,
I need a different for me personally,
my personal practice.
I need different flow,
but I love a hot Vinyasa type class.
So just a flow,
a heated heated studio with a heated flow.
I love it.
But also I love to sweat.
I love that burn.
I work out a lot.
So I,
I like it,
but I just feel like you have to do what aligns with you and your practice.
Yeah.
Okay.
And that's also it.
And your hairstyle.
Especially when you just got done.
I'm bored.
You don't need to see yourself anymore because I didn't have enough food.
Okay.
It makes up to be breakfast.
So yeah,
it wasn't breakfast.
Do you all do yoga at all or have you done it?
I have done.
In New York city,
I did the big room yoga.
Yeah.
And that was great.
That was great.
But I,
I have not done it regularly,
but I need to go.
What is big room?
How is that different from regular yoga?
Big room yoga.
It is a very,
I like to say it's a,
it's a stricter style of yoga.
And some people might not like if I say this,
but you have a,
literally a set of poses that you do every class.
It's about 90 minutes.
Um,
you start with a ground series.
You warm up.
Well,
you start with breath,
a breath series,
and then you go to the ground and then you do a standing series.
And it's hot.
It can be intense.
If you,
if you've never practiced it before,
I like to tell people when they will come with me,
make sure you start hydrating the day before.
Oh,
wow.
Because before.
The humidity mixed with the heat.
And then also the poses and the breathing,
you're building up so much heat within your body as well as outside your body.
So if you've never done it,
you don't want to be exhausted.
You might not like it.
So for people who are watching,
they go,
Oh gosh,
they look so cute on television.
You know,
doing yoga.
This is really for everybody.
Or do you have to be really flexible to do it?
What are some of the misnomers you want to dispel?
If I got paid every time somebody said to me,
I'm not flexible enough.
I don't respectfully.
I do not care.
It does not matter if you're flexible or not.
Right.
Because nine times out of 10,
when I get those,
I'm not flexible enough people on the mat.
And I'm like,
look how deep you just gotten.
I think sometimes we underestimate our bodies.
And the ability to actually trust it and let our bodies just move into these poses
and to these different movements by just simply following in our breath.
Wow.
Then you can do it.
Thank you so much.
We got your Instagram feeds up there where people can stay connected.
And you all are.
You can stay and do yoga if you like.
We're going to keep the show going here because you are in for an earful of
relaxation.
We're tapping into all of the senses,
our day of rest and relaxation ramps up with ease.
So stick around for a live sound bath.
And then after that,
we're going to share some simple tea recipes to find Zen.
That segment is coming up in our kitchen.
Oh,
I don't know about you ladies,
but I'm deep into my relaxation bag here.
We're going to keep it going.
Tranquility for the ears and our nervous system with a sound bath.
We have personal trainer,
yoga teacher and sound healer,
Trisha Murray.
Trisha,
thank you so much for coming.
Thank you for having me,
Marissa.
Great to be here.
I know you were taking in some of the prior segments to yours as well.
Fantastic.
I'm a yoga teacher as well.
So I appreciate it.
Did we do a good job?
You did fantastic.
I get into this sound bath thing.
This is a first for me.
I've never done it before.
I see it all over social media.
I'm sure you ladies have seen it too.
What is it and what is it not?
Yes.
So a sound bath is the great news that you don't have to do anything.
You get to arrive in a safe space and absorb the sound vibrations.
So yes,
sound is something that we hear,
but sound is also something that is vibrating in our body.
So for example,
all of these bowls here that you see are seven,
represent the seven different energy chakras in the body.
So for example,
this one that's going to be super low and deep,
that represents the root chakra,
our lowest energy center.
And it may resonate with you a little bit different than something like a
higher tone would in the heart chakra.
Right?
So some people think that you're coming to do yoga during a sound bath.
It's really a time of relaxation to help relax the nervous system.
Sierra on this yoga segment had talked about the parasympathetic nervous
system, that rest and digest.
So these sounds,
these sound vibrations help to activate that rest and digest system,
which all of us need.
And all of the chakras are created equal or are they?
Yes,
they're all up aligned through the body from the base up through the top of
the head.
Have you done this before?
One time,
one time.
All right.
Well,
Tricia,
get us started.
So you're all centered from yoga,
so you can keep your eyes open or closed.
Maybe you find a relaxed gaze and just find your center and we'll begin.
Okay.
Trisha is all watching here.
And that's amazing.
I think I can all that is relaxing.
How do you know in terms of which one to hit and you are rubbing the various
containers?
Yeah.
To activate the bowls,
you take a tap on the side and then you pull it around to vibrate the sound
and make it louder and louder.
And really it's a creation.
It's a fun creative process for me to be able to have a sound bath and to
host a sound bath.
And each one will be unique and there'll be different sounds.
Also have different instruments.
I have a Koshi chime here.
That's nice.
She's like a DJ.
It's really just guided.
Yeah.
And,
and different sound basketball require different instruments.
For example,
I've led ones that represent the elements.
So for example,
an earth element might have one with drums or something really deep and
resonant and something like an air energy would be more like these chimes.
We also have for water energy.
We have the rain stick.
So not to be funny,
but if you're ever having a moment,
say at work and at home and you need to escape,
you go to your bathroom and just do it.
1000%.
Yes.
To give that vibration,
that sound vibration to yourself.
Yes.
And it's really the intention,
setting the intention of relaxation and giving that moment to yourself.
And that's the beauty of coming to a sound bath,
even just being off your phone,
right off from the screen,
tuning into yourself,
relaxing.
Would you say that's comparable to having like wind chimes?
When people,
when you go to people's homes,
you,
as soon as you walk in,
you feel that air.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
Or like,
yeah,
outside in their backyard.
Yeah.
Yes,
yes,
absolutely.
The house of Zen.
Like too,
this is something you would have to go to an experience.
Like you can't create and relax your own sound bath is what I'm saying.
I see what you're saying.
I think it's more about the,
like I said,
the intention of,
you know,
giving yourself the sound,
but I would vote that it is way more relaxing to go and enjoy a sound bath,
which we have a few coming up in the DC area.
One at Vita.
We're doing a floating,
uh,
sound bath where you would get on floating mattresses in their penthouse pool and
Vita Navy.
I love that.
Monday,
August 3rd,
seven 30.
We would love for,
for you all to join us.
And then I also have another one at district flow coming up in Capitol Hill on
August 29th.
So if you want to try it,
yes,
in person,
it's great.
Highly.
I recommend
change,
you know,
since you got into sound baths,
I,
um,
have really appreciated being able to hold space for people and being able to
hold space for people to relax and come in and just kind of leave their
worries at the door and allow them to,
to unwind.
And I've had so many people come up and say,
I'm not sure what just happened.
Something good.
And I was like,
okay,
that's why I wanted to start with what is it?
Was it,
what is it not,
you know,
kind of mystify,
I guess what some people think sound baths are.
Exactly.
Yeah.
It seemed very healing.
I went to one for the first time at our friend's house.
She had about 10 women and I felt like that throat chakra kind of loosened up.
It was really interesting.
I had never been before.
It was pretty cool.
That's amazing.
Thank you.
Is there a time for us?
One more.
Okay.
Do you ever find that people have a hard time relaxing in a sound bath?
Absolutely.
Yes.
And I am one of those people today was lovely,
but like in the first one I went to,
I had a hard time relaxing.
I've heard that.
Yes.
And we have that running tape of thoughts,
right?
I call it my ticker tape,
right?
We see it on the bottom of the news,
just like running about all the thoughts.
So by,
but by giving yourself that time and yes,
it may take about 15 minutes to start to unwind,
right?
Like we go on vacation.
It takes us like about two days to disconnect.
And then it's time to go back to work.
Exactly.
That's not going to happen to you in August.
No.
Okay,
good.
Well,
I'll try another one.
Yes.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
You know what?
I think we've talked enough and we've done enough.
It's time to treat ourselves with some tea.
Yay.
By the kind you sip,
not spills.
And Tricia,
you're welcome to hang around and get some tea as well.
Thank you.
As we move over here,
I have Rachel Rosner.
Tell us about your business and your tea.
This is fantastic.
Thank you for having me on the show.
I'm so glad that I get to have a tea party with all of you.
We're located in Reston,
Virginia.
My business name is Eldon street tea shop,
and we are in the historic Lake Anne area.
We've been in business for nine years and we do loose leaf tea.
We tea retail manufacturing for a lot of the local cafes and restaurants in the area,
as well as tea parties.
We have very unique tea parties that we offer.
Can this be a tea party?
Yes.
But this is a blast one.
Tell us about what you brought.
So, you know,
I like to say that every tea time is a built in meditation because what's the one thing you have to do with tea when you're drinking it?
Not talk and sip.
You have to wait for it to steep.
You can't just,
it's not like coffee where you can just pour and drink and you have to sit and wait and tea is slow and it makes you meditate.
So what I like to do is when I make a cup of tea,
we're going to make a couple different ways.
The idea today is to teach you how to do it on a daily basis so that it's easy,
fun and a good mindfulness practice that you can enjoy every single day.
So would you like to make a cup of tea with me?
Okay,
so we're going to start out by making a pot of tea.
Okay,
sounds simple,
right?
Um,
there are a couple of different ways you can do it.
Um,
if you're in a rush,
um,
you can actually make,
um,
these tea filter bags are compostable and also non bleached.
Um,
we do sell them at the tea shop,
um,
and it makes it easy cleanup.
Um,
so you would just put,
take the tea bag.
Um,
what tea would you like?
We have a white tea,
a pear,
raspberry,
South African chai,
which is like a honeybush rooibos tea.
It's so nice.
And then lavender dreams.
Which one?
Which one do you want?
It sounds like that was our favorite.
Yeah,
my favorite too.
Okay,
we'll do your favorite.
So rooibos is a really wonderful,
um,
not tea plant.
It's actually an herbal or what we call it to same plant.
Um,
and it is a red bush tea that's grown specifically in South Africa and it's known for its semi sweet qualities without actually having sugar or calories in it.
So it's got that.
Yeah.
And then we actually made it into a chai.
So you've got cardamom,
ginger,
no caffeine,
no caffeine at all.
Oh my gosh.
Okay.
And it,
you know,
if you're ready for chai season,
but not quite ready for chai season,
this is the perfect way to get ready.
So what you want to do is now we're making a pot,
so I'm going to use a bunch.
And no caffeine in rooibos,
right?
Correct.
Yeah.
And then it's also has in it honeybush,
which is kind of rooibos's cousin plant.
So we're going to use about five scoops here.
And as you can see,
it's filling up,
but what are you going to do is fold this over,
put it in your pot and it just self seals.
And so you don't have to do anything.
Yeah.
Now you can use your,
I brought my industrial one,
you know,
but we're going to keep you here.
This is so much fun.
We're going to do more of this after the break.
We have Rachel here from Northern Virginia's rest and actually Eldon street tea shop.
We're going to make our tea and sip our tea after this quick break.
That'd be your burst of joy.
We'll see you after this.
Relaxation continues,
even in the newsroom.
A lot of things happening in studio.
Thank you so much,
Rachel,
for coming.
Now the tea is finished.
Now the tea is,
we have our cute little timer here and now we're going to spill the tea into our cups.
we love that.
Well,
watch your hand though.
We turned that tuning in.
What type of tea are we drinking?
We're drinking,
um,
our South African chai,
which is a rooibos based tea.
Um,
watch your hand.
I don't want to.
All good.
And it is,
um,
it has rooibos,
honeybush.
Um,
it has cardamom,
cinnamon,
uh,
all,
um,
all spice and ginger.
It's so good.
I love it.
Oh my gosh.
I'm going to drink some in just a bit.
I want to give you the opportunity to talk about your upcoming festival.
Yes.
November.
Yes.
So November we have the,
um,
Northern Virginia tea festival.
This will be our fourth year,
November 7th,
and tickets and information will be going up on the,
um,
website shortly for that.
And we hope to have you guys come.
We have all different kinds of tea meditation,
um,
with yoga,
actually,
um,
as well as educational classes.
Yeah,
I know.
And,
um,
educational classes,
afternoon tea,
as well as 50 different vendors from the mid Atlantic region.
Now,
Rachel,
you left something out.
She started that.
yeah.
It's our fourth year and,
um,
we are so excited to host it again.
And,
um,
it is a wonderful event to bring community together.
that's so good.
Yeah.
We're all about the tea.
Uh,
finally,
how do you maintain balance and your own peace and relaxation of being a
business owners and a member of the community?
Yeah.
And also,
um,
I'm a mom,
um,
my daughter,
hi Robin.
Um,
uh,
I drink tea,
you know,
it's my,
it's my Zen for the day.
Um,
and it's also just being surrounded by the people who make up your tribe and
your community.
So,
yeah.
Yeah.
It makes a difference who you surround yourself with.
And I was telling the ladies here,
you all are here for a reason.
You're hand selected.
And I think the energy has been fabulous.
Hopefully you all feel what we feel through the screen because that's why we're doing
it.
All right.
We'll be right back after this quick break with your end notes,
our end note,
rest and relaxation.
Thank you so much to all of my guests.
What did today mean to you?
It was so fun.
And it was of course relaxing,
but it was also just warmed my heart.
There was a lot of gratitude,
lots of feeling of being cozy and grateful.
Oh,
I love that.
It taught me to persevere.
I can have some balance with my coastal culture and the slow mornings of
relaxation.
um,
um.
Yeah.
We could tell from the beginning,
it just was going to be a really special hour.
Thank you.
We've got more stuff coming up tomorrow on the Marissa Mitchell show.
R&B singer India Sean,
she will join us live and perform her song Marmalade and talk about her
career.
Also working with Chris Brown and Carrie Hilson.
