Ukrainian defense forces have consolidated their positions on the battlefield in the Donetsk and Kharkiv regions and successfully thwarted a series of new offensives by Russian invaders, according to a new report by analysts at the Institute for the Study of War.
It is noted that Russian troops continued offensive operations in the Kupyansk and Borovoe directions, but made no advances as Ukrainian forces counterattacked. According to a source associated with the Russian Western Group of Forces, on September 15, the Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked Russian positions north and southeast of Kupyansk.
According to an analysis, Russian troops are attempting to narrow the Ukrainian bridgehead southeast of Kupyansk due to the deterioration of their position near the city. Colonel Viktor Tregubov, press secretary of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, stated that Russian troops are intensifying their operations along the left bank of the Oskol River near Kupyansk, particularly in the Kivsharivsk direction, where the occupiers are attempting to narrow the Ukrainian bridgehead. Tregubov stated that Russian troops are largely unable to hold their positions on the right bank of the Oskil River closer to Kupyansk itself and are losing territory to Ukrainian forces. He added that the enemy likely lacks sufficient capabilities to conduct a large-scale offensive in the coming weeks, but the situation could change if the Russian military command allocates more personnel for such operations. Analysts note that Russian troops have intensified offensive operations in the Kupyansk direction, but have recently been unable to advance, and autumn could further stabilize the front line.

At the same time, it is noted that Russian troops are intensifying offensive operations and deploying additional troops in the Dobropillia direction in anticipation of a cold snap.
"A sergeant with a Ukrainian battalion operating in the Dobropillia sector stated on September 15 that Russian forces have been deploying new units over the past few weeks and intensifying their efforts to reach Dobropillia ahead of the seasonal change and the withering of vegetation. The sergeant stated that Russian forces are increasingly using various types of attack drones, improving reconnaissance, and attempting to increase the depth of strikes in the area… Russian forces may attempt to use the bad weather as cover to deploy large numbers of personnel in mechanized columns to the Dobropillya sector, as they previously did in the Pokrovsk sector," the report states.
