Presidential aide Hikmat Hajiyev: Azerbaijan elevated relations with US to qualitatively new level

Azerbaijan expresses confidence that future US administrations will continue to develop partnership relations with Baku, Hikmat Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, said at the CAMCA Regional Forum 2026 in Baku.
According to him, over the past two years, Azerbaijan has managed to build strong strategic partnership relations with leading world powers, including the US, China, as well as the European Union.
"Regarding China, at the regional level we have established a comprehensive strategic partnership, and we are working on its practical implementation. The second direction is the US and Azerbaijan. The Washington summit was not dedicated only to the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace agenda. We took advantage of this opportunity to elevate relations between the US and Azerbaijan to a qualitatively new strategic level," Hajiyev noted.
The assistant to the president pointed out that under previous US administrations, Azerbaijan experienced certain difficulties, and insufficient attention was paid to the South Caucasus and the Caspian region.
"Therefore, we wanted to bring the US back to the region with a role and approach that, in our view, correspond to its importance," he added.
Hajiyev emphasized that the peace agenda between Azerbaijan and Armenia and the peace agreement are of strategic importance for the entire region: "We are confident that future administrations will continue to develop these relations, and the American side will continue to pay attention to the peace agenda and engage with the region through it." He said that relations between Baku and Moscow are currently stable and developing within good-neighborliness. "As for our immediate neighbors, geography is our destiny. In biology, we cannot choose our parents, and in geopolitics, we cannot choose our neighbors. This is our destiny, and we must live together. Therefore, I am glad that relations between Russia and Azerbaijan are now stable and normal and are developing within the framework of good-neighborliness," he said. According to him, sanctions against Iran create serious difficulties for Azerbaijan from an economic and business standpoint, exerting a negative impact not only on Iran, but also on Azerbaijan and other neighboring countries.
Azerbaijan is guided in its foreign policy by the principles of sovereignty, independence, and strategic autonomy, he said.
"For us, this is a strategic asset, and we paid a high price to gain independence and preserve sovereignty," he noted.
According to him, Azerbaijan's relations with other states are built on the principles of transparency and mutual respect.
"Principles remain principles. We see the erosion of international law, but despite this, Azerbaijan continues to adhere to its own principles and approaches in interstate relations," the assistant to the president stated.
He also noted that Azerbaijan's foreign policy is inclusive in nature.
"Our relations with one side do not mean that we should oppose another. That is why Azerbaijan maintains good relations with Israel. At the same time, we do not abandon our principles," Hajiyev said.
According to him, Azerbaijan supports the creation of a state of Palestine with its capital in East Jerusalem.
"Our Israeli friends also know Azerbaijan's position," he added.
Hajiyev also stressed that Azerbaijan proceeds from the principles of good-neighborliness and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.
"There can be no situation where any actions against another state are carried out from the sovereign territory of Azerbaijan," he declared.
