The arrival of additional F-16 multirole aircraft requires equipping them with the necessary types of ammunition and missiles to be able to combat Russian air threats.
This is reported in an article by The National Interest . It is noted that since the first deliveries began in July 2024, Kyiv has received between 40 and 50 F-16 fighter jets from its European allies. Approximately 40 of these aircraft are in service with the Ukrainian Air Force. Ukraine has lost at least five of these aircraft so far.
"Nevertheless, the overall impact of the F-16 on the battlefield has been extremely positive for Kyiv. For more than two years, the American-made fighters have become a vital operational driving force for Ukraine's air defense, intercepting over 1,000 Russian drones and missiles. These aircraft account for approximately 80% of the Ukrainian Air Force's combat sorties," the article states. It is also noted that Kyiv has expanded its capacity to train pilots to fly Western fighter jets, as the country has received additional F-16s. When the US and European NATO allies introduced F-16s into the Ukrainian Air Force, none of the Ukrainian pilots were familiar with these aircraft, requiring extensive training in the West. Training remains a priority today, although the training period has been somewhat reduced, the publication notes. During their training, Ukrainian pilots face several challenging tasks that affect how quickly they acquire the necessary skills to operate F-16 fighter jets. In particular, a key factor is that control and warning systems have their own specific features in the English language, which also includes specialized military aviation terminology that differs from civil aviation terminology in English.
However, as the publication suggested, a bigger problem for many pilots is the fact that the F-16 does not have a central control system like Soviet fighters.
The F-16's pilot seat features a unique design with a 30-degree tilt angle—developed to help the pilot cope with extreme gravity. The pilot seat is integrated with a fixed, pressure-sensitive side joystick on the right console. The flight controls are mounted on the sides, leaving the pilot's knee and foot area completely open. In April, Ukraine received its first mobile training simulators. These are helping Ukrainian pilots quickly transition to operating F-16 aircraft. The simulators allow pilots to practice complex combat scenarios and even simulate missions, which has been shown to improve reaction time, decision-making, and situational awareness.
