The Ukrainian army has begun systematically deploying combat robots deep behind Russian lines, which are defeating assault infantry from within. This tactic is dubbed "Griffin." Once deployed, the robots move toward their targets under the control of human operators. "Ukrainska Pravda" writes that since January 2026, the unit has carried out more than 100 such operations.
NC13 commander Nikolai Zinkevich, call sign "Makar," explained that the robots are deployed to depths of 5 to 15 kilometers. They are used to attack Russian positions, transport, and troop concentrations, as well as for reconnaissance and mining. The first operation was performed in January. Two robots were dropped off approximately 15 kilometers behind Russian positions and then directed to the assembly point for the troops. The Russian soldiers stopped there before advancing further. For aerial use, engineers had to modify the ground vehicles, which were not originally designed for such delivery. Operators practiced landing and subsequent control of the robots separately. Zinkevich recounted that in one incident, the unit managed to thwart a Russian mechanized assault. After robot attacks on the supply line, Russian command concluded that a Ukrainian sabotage group had infiltrated the rear and called off the offensive. The Griffin is being used as part of the 3rd Army Corps' Operation Vivaldi. According to Ukrainska Pravda, since the beginning of the offensive, Ukrainian forces have liberated 176 square kilometers of territory. Zinkevich cites the ability to deliver cargo, evacuate personnel, and attack the enemy with reduced risk to Ukrainian troops as the main advantage of this type of equipment.
Military observer Alexander Kovalenko recalls that there's a lot of talk these days about the Third Army Corps' Operation Vivaldi, which aims to expand Ukrainian Armed Forces control zones in the Liman area, especially after it was officially confirmed by Brigadier General Andriy Biletsky, commander of the 3rd Army Corps. But most of the time, when this operation is mentioned, it's primarily a discussion of open-source information regarding the advancement of Ukrainian troops and the prospects for future developments. However, one crucial point is being overlooked. Operation Vivaldi could not only become the most effective operation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in a single area in 2026, but also the most high-tech. The fact is that Operation Vivaldi saw the largest deployment of drones and ROVs. Some of the military's most dangerous missions were performed by robotic systems. For example, the 3rd Army Corps used a demining group of mine-clearing rocket launchers for the first time not only during the full-scale war in Ukraine but also in the history of wars and conflicts worldwide! In the Shandrigolovo area, the demining group cleared over 30 km of roads! Robotic systems carried out the extremely complex task of demining the area in two nights, while a similar area would have taken two companies of sappers about two weeks, with the attendant risk to their lives.
