Bridges are difficult targets to hit, and when deciding whether to strike such structures in Russia and the occupied territories, a precise assessment of their feasibility and available capabilities is necessary. In particular, disabling the Crimean Bridge would require a large number of expensive missiles, even though its strategic importance has now diminished. Military expert, serviceman, and head of the Council of Reservists of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Ivan Tymochko told UNIAN.
"Whether it's advisable for us to strike Russian bridges now should be decided by those who can assess the maximum damage that would be inflicted on the enemy, as well as our available resources. We may want to destroy Valdai, where Putin's residence is located, and for the Kremlin to burn, but emotion alone is not enough in this matter, because we need to proceed from real capabilities and resources, as well as intelligence confirming the importance of the target. Every strike on Russian territory represents a tremendous amount of work by the people who plan these operations," he said, commenting on a possible response to Russian strikes on bridges, particularly in Kyiv.
According to him, most bridges were built to withstand earthquakes, missiles, and even nuclear strikes, making them extremely durable. He added that bridges are very difficult targets. "A bridge can be destroyed by destroying a large number of supports. After all, if the spans between the supports are broken, they are relatively easy to replace. Yes, bridge operations are suspended for a certain period, but during this time, barges and other means of crossing the water can be temporarily used," Timochko noted.
He emphasized that striking a bridge would require a large number of missiles, as well as a significant number of launch systems to simultaneously launch weapons with the expectation that they would be able to overcome enemy air defenses, since bridges are also covered by aircraft and various types of air defense systems.
Timochko said that a large number of missiles would also be needed to disable the Crimean Bridge.
"We've always had a problem with missiles. And the question arises: what should be the priority – disabling Russian defense industry facilities and oil refineries or the bridge, which currently has no strategic significance? We're targeting Russian targets that generate revenue for Russia's budget and contribute to the war effort. Using scarce, expensive missiles against the Crimean Bridge, where the enemy would suffer fewer losses, is hardly a priority. The Crimean Bridge was Putin's symbol, intended to demonstrate that Russia is forever in Crimea," he added.
Tymochko explained that the Crimean Bridge is currently used more for passenger transport than for military logistics, so investing expensive missiles in it is not entirely feasible. He added that it would be more practical to destroy Russian missile launchers used to launch missiles at Ukraine, as well as facilities in Crimea that contribute to the war and support enemy logistics.
"If we're talking about the Chongar Bridge, which we're targeting, that's a completely different story. It's a narrow isthmus, and advancing through the swamps on either side is impossible, so it's a priority for strikes, as destroying it disrupts the enemy's logistics. Just like with strikes on the dam on the Arabat Spit," the military expert emphasized.
He noted that bridges can be hit with Taurus, Tomahawk, ATACMS, and Storm Shadow missiles, although Ukraine does not have the first two on this list, so this is more of a potential option.
"We already have our own Palyanitsya, as well as Neptuns, Sapsan missiles, FP-7s, FP-9s, and other systems. But such strikes are carried out comprehensively, since using only one type of weapon will not achieve the desired result. Therefore, it makes sense to combine missiles and drones of various types," Tymochko added.
