Philadelphia treasure hunters search for hidden prizes in citywide scavenger hunt

The city of Philadelphia is spending the day searching for treasure.
This part of an event taking place
in several cities across the country.
Clues are revealed daily, and participants have
a chance to win rare coins, cash, or other prizes.
Action News reporter Leland Pinder, live for us from Penn's Landing,
with all you need to know about this.
Hi, Leland.
Yeah, hey, Gray, this is actually pretty cool.
There's about $10,000 in prizes up for grabs here,
and we're here in Penn's Landing where the treasure was found today.
Organizers tell me that most clues will be in and around Center City,
and once they release those clues, the race is on.
I love coins. I have a whole collection at home.
The hunt is on in Philadelphia.
People are fanning out in search of hidden certificates
that can be redeemed for rare coins, currency, or other collectibles.
They redeem it for a numismatic prize,
which can be coins, currency, bullion,
and they have the choice to keep it.
They can add it to an existing collection, start a new collection,
or we'll exchange it for cash.
Sacks Bowers and Find the Cash PHL teamed up
to create the event to have fun,
but also with the goal of getting more people
into rare coin collection and investing.
What better place to do that than in Philadelphia,
the home of the first U.S. Mint.
A lot of really great early coinage has been passed down through
the generations through Philadelphia families.
Clues will drop every day at 5.30
on the Sacks Bowers Philly Instagram page.
All right, so the first clue just posted.
It's a video. This is what it looks like,
and it looks like that might be Penn's Landing,
so let's ride over there and try and figure this out.
Officials tell us the person that found
the certificate found it in just a matter of minutes.
We weren't able to get here in time to see it ourselves,
but they did give us some video.
This is video of Monday's winner, and here he is again officially
documenting his good fortune, which is a requirement of the contest.
I was literally just sat on top.
Plain sight.
Yep.
There are also treasure hunts in Boston, Miami, and San Francisco.
But organizers say Philadelphia has the best participation.
As soon as it dropped,
I hopped on the train and booked my way over here as quick as I could.
Yeah, people are really into this.
And just think about next time you're cleaning out
a house or something like that,
when you find those coins, don't throw them away or donate them.
Organizers tell me they helped a family in Delaware some time ago
get $2 million for some old coins
that they found cleaning out someone's house.
So you never know what you're sitting on there.
Now, winners can redeem their prizes or trade it in for cash
at the Sacks Bowers Gallery on Market Street in Center City.
This all runs through Saturday.
New clues posted every day until then.
But now, we're live here in Penn's Landing.
Leland Pinder for Action News at 10 on PHL 17, great story.
All right, so the hunt is on, money to be won.
All right, Leland, thanks.
