AI GeneratedThis segment features Jennifer Hatalsky from Calloway's Nursery, who provides guidance for North Texas gardeners on what to plant for the holiday season. She highlights fast-growing herbs and cool-season vegetables for Thanksgiving, as well as ornamental plants and flowers to enhance landscape color during the autumn and winter months.
But first, we want to talk about what you can plant now
for the holiday season, Thanksgiving just over a month away.
But there are some things that North Texas gardeners can plant now
to have on the table by Thanksgiving.
So good morning to Jennifer Hatalsky from Calloway's Nursery.
So let's start over here on this end of the table because you've got
a bunch of plants here and herbs that grow very fast.
Yes, very fast. Now is the time to plant all of your herbs
and cool season vegetables for the season.
We have fabulous weather coming this weekend, so now's the time
for herbs, of course, holiday recipes, sage, parsley, dill, rosemary,
all great things that you can put in containers, leave outside
on your patio, and then start to bring in when the weather gets cooler.
We also have quick-turn things like mustard, lettuce in store.
You can plant your radishes right now
and you'll have those for Thanksgiving.
There's other cool season vegetables like broccoli,
brussel sprouts, cauliflower.
Plant now and they'll be ready, you know, mid-December.
That's amazing that it can happen
so fast like that and you could have that in your garden.
Yes, so fabulous.
Don't forget to feed all of your vegetables and herbs.
Have this wonderful fertilizer from Espoma
that covers veggies and herbs.
and another from J.R. Peters as well.
We want to make sure to give everything
the nutrients that they need.
Okay, and what would you say about sunlight too
for some of these?
Sunlight, full sun.
Do you want them in a spot with full sun?
Yes, full sun.
Same thing with your herbs, keep them outside in full sun.
When you bring them in your house,
put them in a sunny windowsill, even in your kitchen,
just so you can snip and put your herbs
in your favorite recipes.
And it looks nice too, right?
It does.
Okay, let's talk about all of the plants you have
on this far end of the table
because you were just saying,
we finally have the weather that we've been waiting for.
And so now you can just really beautify your garden
and get these beautiful colors out there.
Yes, now is the time to plant.
If you didn't attend our garden talk this past weekend,
we gave a very simple formula to refresh your flower beds.
Four things you want to build,
build with big trees and shrubs,
that's the building blocks of your landscape.
Then I love to layer with grasses
and perennials like garden mums.
Garden mums down in the front,
we have ones full in bloom
or ones budded and ready to bloom
so you could really enjoy those blooms coming on.
And then really kind of the star of the show
for cool season color, matrix pansies.
Plant these now, they can last all fall,
they can handle cold snaps,
and they'll even bloom for you next spring.
Just make sure to feed them with fertilizer.
They are heavy feeders to keep them blooming
and beautiful and happy.
Yeah, I love that you can use the pansies now
and then you get a lot of time with them
through the spring. You do, you do.
And then we have other really great things too
to put in containers like cyclamen
and these really fun ornamental peppers.
So it's a really fun time to-
But those are not for eating.
They are not for eating.
Nope, they're just there to look fun and funky and really cool.
Awesome.
