Welcome to it.
GDLA Plus here.
Love is here.
Okay.
Look at the cat dragon.
Uh-huh.
Yep, with your pocket square.
Yeah.
Go team.
All right.
Did you know, Bob?
Yes.
Today is not only game three, but it is also National Dessert Day.
So if you could eat only one dessert
for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Carrot cake.
Really?
Maybe.
Actually, a really good one.
I love carrot cake.
I like the cream cheese icing.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Cheesecake.
Cheesecake.
Or red velvet.
Cheesecake.
Yeah, what about you?
How about just ice cream?
Ice cream sundae?
How about creme brulee?
Creme brulee.
All right,
on to more important news.
We do have breaking news this morning.
A power outage could be imposed
in the Malibu area ahead of the incoming
Santa Ana winds.
And firefighters attack a brush fire on VA property in West LA.
So let's go out to Gigi Gracia on the scene with the very latest.
Gigi. And we actually start with breaking news
because there is a fire that just broke out in
Tarzana. Sky Fox is above the area right now.
Take a look. This is on Melvin near Topham.
The back street is Shirley.
You've got at least one palm tree, several trees burning, and it was
fire was actually burning between the properties
from Melvin to the back street of Shirley.
Right now, L.A. City firefighters have deployed a lot of assets.
They are fighting this fire.
It appears to be small, but they are very concerned
because already we're starting to feel a light breeze.
There are what they call flashy fuels that are fueling the fire,
and structures are threatened.
Again, L.A. City fire fighting a new fire
that just broke out a few minutes ago in the Tarzana area.
You are looking live from our eye in the sky.
This is Melvin and Shirley and near Topham,
and that is where the fire is burning.
A lot of assets deployed right there.
It looks like it may have started near the trees.
Firefighters reporting several trees were on fire,
including a palm tree.
We're going to keep monitoring that fire.
Meanwhile, let's go to the news of these red flag warnings
and these predicted power outages
to prevent an emergency in the red flag
because of the red flag warning.
Now, we reached out to Southern California Edison,
who this morning told us they have
almost a quarter of a million customers under consideration
for a public safety power shutoff.
They are working on specific areas, but this includes L.A.,
Kern, Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Tulare Counties.
So far, as of early this morning, they hadn't implemented any of them.
But Malibu, the city notified its residents very publicly
this morning that they were notified at
6.37 AM that a likely shut off would occur
to Malibu's Merlin circuit within four hours.
That would have made it 10.30.
Now we've reached out multiple times to the city of Malibu.
They told us to stand by and we're standing
by to see if the power actually was shut off or not.
All of this due to red flag fire conditions
and those Santa Ana winds that are scheduled
to start tomorrow at 6 AM and go through Friday.
Now the combination of higher temperatures,
we're already starting to feel those temps
higher as the morning continues
and low humidity create what's called extreme fire danger.
Obviously the winds don't cause the fire,
but they sure help spread it and very quickly.
So not only the city of Malibu,
but officials throughout LA County, throughout Ventura County
and surrounding counties are asking everyone
to be prepared for these predicted high winds
again with gusts of up to 70 miles per hour starting tomorrow morning.
But we may see some of those power outages,
those preemptive power outages today.
Now let's talk about another fire that had LA City,
we're going back to Tarzana, I believe
We have SkyFox above Tarzana again,
that is the latest fire that broke out.
Again, the streets in play right now, Melvin, Shirley, near Topham.
Now, LA City Fire does have that area surrounded and they are working.
They've called in aerial assets,
they've got their assets on the ground.
They reported a palm tree and several trees burning.
I wanna go to SkyFox, Stu Mundell is live up above it.
Tell us what you're seeing there, Stu.
Well, Gigi, all the information that you
were giving out is exactly what's happening.
It looks like a fire just rapidly going through
a lot of properties out here, large homes.
These are all very nice homes in this area.
None of the structures really have been damaged.
That is the positive out here.
The aerial assets that were out here apparently not dropping water,
just kind of guiding the people on the ground.
I'm going to go a little bit wider
and give you a quick, there's one of them right there.
That was L.A. City that just ran through the shot.
Now, this is on Shirley and actually between Shirley
and Melvin right here off of Topham.
And you can see these are large properties,
and apparently that fire started somewhere in the backyard.
You know, Gigi, I don't know if this is one of the factors.
Could it have been something with some wires down?
Not really sure, but just as you pan through here,
you can see a couple of smoky spots out there
where the fire had gotten very close to structures.
Right here, this home under construction,
that is one of those plastic fences out there.
You can see some of that damage, some of the melting there as well.
Fire department all through this area and basically chasing hot spots.
Those palm trees, that's going to be a little difficult
to get to with those hose lines.
But again, they're working diligently to knock down all those flames
and keep this area safe from spreading into the homes.
But it just shows you, once again, those winds come through here,
things get dry, a little bit of fire,
and then it just kind of rips through anywhere.
This, in this case, a neighborhood out here in Tarzana.
And you can see
that white smoke.
Stu Mundell live in SkyFox above this fire in Tarzana.
Again, burning on Melvin, also on Shirley near Topham.
The fire quickly spreading from the palm trees.
You see a lot of white smoke.
Of course, white smoke is what you want to see
and that's a good sign, but already the
fire department getting calls from people
in other areas of the San Fernando Valley
reporting that smoke that is all coming from Tarzana.
So bottom line, prepare those Santa Ana winds are coming.
They don't start fires, but they certainly help spread them.
And you are looking alive there at what's happening in Tarzana.
Of course, we're gonna monitor these fires.
We're going to monitor the power outages,
and we'll bring you the latest.
And we'll send it back to you in the studio.
All right, Gigi and Stu, thank you for your coverage there.
Meantime, pressure is on.
The heat is on for our boys in blue, right?
The Dodgers have lost the first two games of the NLCS.
And tonight, yeah, they need to respond.
Mario Ramirez is live at Dodger Stadium now
with more on this must-win game three.
Mario.
Yeah, crucial game here.
They better respond, Jen.
That is what we're looking for.
And we know they can do it.
They've come back from worse.
We're at Dodger Stadium here on the warning track,
and we've been watching all morning.
They've been preparing every single blade of grass.
Everything's pristine here, and that's why there's
a sign there specifically for the media.
Keep off the grass, as we've been hearing throughout the morning.
And maybe you can catch Andre Sanchez.
He's out there. He's part of the grounds crew.
He's in the mower that's been going back and forth.
He's a lifelong Dodger fan, so you have to imagine how cool it
is for him to prepare the field here for Game 3 of the NLCS.
Again, a big game here, the first home game of the series,
and we're down two in this best of seven.
So let's show you the practice here yesterday at Dodger Stadium.
We know that this team swept the Brewers in last year's NLCS
on their way to winning the World Series,
but this time around, Milwaukee has turned the tables.
They took the first two games, and remember, Brewers also swept
all six regular season meetings against the Dodgers this year.
So I'm sure some are a little worried,
but L.A.'s hoping to return here, helping to shift the momentum.
They get to keep their World Series three-peat hopes alive.
Dodger Stadium has hosted more league
champions than any other ballpark in America.
And just listen to what the coach said, Dave Roberts.
It's more of, hey, man, if you're not feeling good enough that you
can feel like you can perform up to your ability, then we'll pivot.
We'll give you a couple of days.
and talking to him, he feels like he's close to finding something
and was close yesterday in finding something mechanically.
With that, I'm excited.
So I'm all about it, and so he'll be in there.
I think he's focused on winning.
The number one priority is for the team to win.
So whether that be for me to contribute on the offensive side,
I do want to feel confident in the approach
that I'm taking on that day,
whether that be mechanical or anything else
so that's really just been my focus overall
Yeah, manager Dave Roberts says Ohtani is ready, they're
also turning to Blake Snell on the mound
the two-time Cy Young Award winner getting
the start tonight, they're hoping to get the Dodgers
right back into the series back out here live first pitch against
the Brewers is at five o'clock
park gates open at two and i don't know if you can see
but there are a bunch of dragonflies
He's floating over the field here at Dodger Stadium,
and, you know, they are good luck.
According to Google, American and Japanese culture, they are good luck.
So, let's go.
That's the luck we need, right?
It's heating up, and we're getting ready.
Game three of the NLCS here at 5 p.m.
We'll send it back to you.
Yes.
It's called Tonbo.
Dragonflies.
Dragonflies.
Dragonfly in Japanese.
Tonbo.
Tonbo.
Oh, Tonbo.
Tonbo, yeah.
That's a good sign.
May the bats break our way.
We need all the luck we can get.
Yeah, we do at this point.
You can see game three on FS1.
Blake Snell will take the mound for the Dodgers,
opposed by Robert Gasser from Milwaukee.
ESPN LA's Travis Rogers told us earlier Dodgers win 6-2.
We're going to hold them to that.
Make it so.
Yeah.
First pitch is just after 5 o'clock,
and, of course, we'll have postgame coverage throughout
the night here on Fox 11.
That's right.
And coming up, I'll take you inside the Dodgers clubhouse store
to show you all of the gear you can pick up for this playoff run.
All right, the Dodgers, I know,
I know they have to win it tonight and we're still feeling
the pressure, right?
But everybody is excited.
Dodger fever is here
and if you are looking to pick up some new merch, don't worry, I
got you covered.
We're here at the Dodgers Clubhouse where fans
are cheering on the boys in blue of course
by wearing blue.
It's all about the merch right now as the Dodgers chase history.
So let's check it out.
What are the best sellers here?
Let's bring in Lourdes, who can tell us all
about what fans are coming in here for.
It's all about the 17, right?
Yes, everything about us, honey.
What are you seeing, especially now that we're in the playoffs,
now that we're chasing history here?
People come in to look for the items, like, you know, postseason.
Nine-time World Series Dodgers.
Look at all of these years.
This is a really nice jacket.
And it has the big L.A. in the back, World Series, too.
Look at that.
We're going to add another year.
Another one, three, four, five.
Another year.
Let's go.
No two pitch, Kirk,
bounce is right.
Three-peat in baseball is unheard of.
I think we're one step closer to a three-peat for sure.
I think they could do it.
All right, so you have so much merch, jackets,
and what else?
We do a customized customization in here.
So a lot of people can't just especially for this
because it's Otani's signature and the dog.
Decal. Decal.
So a lot of people are just pretty excited for this.
This is also another option
in terms of uniforms and jerseys, right?
Tell us about these.
Yeah, so we do have the blue jersey, and also we have the gray one.
We also have the City Connect,
which that's what they use when they play on Saturday.
I just think they're really cool and I like watching them a lot.
The hats are gonna be selling off the shelves right here.
Obviously in Japanese, Hiragana right here, Dodgers, let's go.
Okay, so these are vinyl decals,
so you can put those on whatever, your car.
There's so much here
because you have brands all participating in Dodgers gear.
You have stuff for women, obviously.
Yes, we do have women stuff too.
We do have kids as well too.
Okay, look at the kids.
And you said another big seller is Hello Kitty.
We have Hello Kitty as well.
Hello Kitty.
This is one of the biggest things.
Kids love Hello Kitty.
We all do.
Look at this.
Let's go.
Shohei, he needs to step it up a little bit though this postseason.
What do you think about how the team's playing?
Sometimes we get that little stressing,
but at the end of the day, we always try to bring
it home. Let's go Dodgers, three P, let's go Dodgers.
Let's start the Dodgers fans off young, right?
Because babies can't forget about the babies.
And you can't forget about the dogs too, if you have a pet at home.
So you gotta get the jersey as well.
How about sales this time around?
Because I know Dodger fans, they've been in this boat before.
They have a lot of gear, but this year's special.
It's always when it comes to Dodger time, it's always busy.
The only thing is that when they're not in town,
it is a little bit of quiet.
So Wednesday, so we're hoping that we get
the whole fan base over here too.
Yeah.
And a lot of Japanese people come to travel as well too.
So it's tourist is a big thing.
Let's go Dodgers.
Let's go. Let's bring it home.
Let's go.
So I know there's questions
because it is called the Dodgers Clubhouse, but
there are many of those Dodger Clubhouse stores
that sell merch all throughout
the LA area, even one in Anaheim.
So if you can't make it to the stadium,
you could go to one of these locations.
Plus, they all have now the new postseason merch,
which is a hot commodity.
Are you one of those parents that started your kids early?
So when they were babies, they had Dodger when they didn't?
No.
Are they Dodger fans now?
Yes, one of them is.
Why?
I mean, I know you're a soccer family, but.
Oh, one's the contrarian.
So what, angels?
He's just rooting for whoever else we're rooting for.
It's one of those.
He just likes to mix it up.
Yeah, okay.
He likes to be a pain in the butt.
Well, that's always funny when you have, like,
the Dodger family, and then you start the kids young.
Oh, right.
And then the kid ends up, like, liking completely some other team,
and they're like, what happened to this kid?
Right.
You might have one of those.
With Halloween now just three weeks away, a new study found there's
a biological connection reason why fear is something many people enjoy.
Oh, 10.
Researchers say there's significant overlap between the fear
and the excitement part of the brain.
They say Halloween gives people a healthy opportunity
to exercise this emotion in a safe, controlled way.
The study also found that being creeped
out can strengthen social bonds,
with many people having a long history of finding happiness.
What?
Finding happiness in creeps?
Right, in being scared of spiders?
Maybe getting through something together,
like if you're going through a heart attack.
kind of like what we did at the 17th door yeah right yeah
that's why i mean that's why i pushed
you first yeah thank you for that like don't you feel
though exhausted after you're really
frightened and then you're out of it you know what i think
that's what i think that's people
like that i think they like that it's almost like
an adrenaline dump right oh yeah but it's like
adrenaline you go up but then you go way down
and you're like okay my life isn't in danger after all
this feels good uh when it comes to rom-coms from the 80s
and the 90s this may be one of the most
iconic scenes i've
never seen this movie
what i've never seen it
but i know that scene i know
you know this scene of course yeah john cusack
that's from the 1989 movie say anything so now
37 years later he's reflecting on the movie's big romantic gesture
in an interview on the happy sad
confused podcast he said audiences today would
not like his character as much i mean i mean i
there's a good chance if say anything
was made today they'd be like you can't do that you're
stalking her you're stalking her you know you're
you're right she gave you her emotional boundaries
and you're you're you're putting a you know
a boombox outside of her i mean there's so many
there's so many things that could be you know there's
a stalker it's creepy now yeah you know
Right, like where do you draw that line?
He followed her home, followed her home,
is he playing music outside of her house?
Why was he doing that?
Like he could just text me the song, you know what I mean?
That's not the- Well, I mean, he's acting creepy.
Some of them sound like holding a boombox, first of all.
He'd be like, what is that thing?
Yeah, now kids would not get that scene at all.
It's like that scene in, what's that holiday movie,
where he's holding up the cards and he- Yes.
Love Actually, he's holding up the card,
he's like in love with her, I think she's now married
or something like that.
But if you're not into it, by card three,
you're like, how long have I been in love?
You're like, oh no.
Get the heck out of here.
It's pretty cute in that movie.
Wow.
You know who he turned out to be, is the guy from The Walking Dead.
I haven't watched The Walking Dead.
I'm on an island right now.
All right, well, speaking of dating,
online dating, just got a little more complicated.
a woman going viral for sharing
her story about how she got stood up. And now she's
asking Bumble to reimburse her.
So this is a page from, this is Paige, that's her name.
Her name is Paige. And a page out of Paige's playbook. She's
an influencer who unloaded her frustration
on TikTok about all the effort that went into
making plans and getting ready just for the date not to show up.
She said she spent over
$100 on food, drinks, tips- Wait a second, why are you spending money
on food and drinks?
I thought she was gonna say for a blowout,
to get her nails done, maybe an outfit.
But she wants Bumble to cover all those- No,
there's no chance, Bumble's not responsible
for that.
And Bumble sets the stage,
and then the people do what the people are gonna do or not do.
But why'd she order all that, knowing she's sitting there by herself?
That's a lot to invest on, I mean- Hey,
that's why being single is rough.
Maybe there was already some interactions online where she was like,
this is gonna actually
be something, right?
Well, yeah, that's what happens.
Well, there, that's why she went on the date.
She went there, but- This is why I'm like, why don't people
just go meet at Starbucks?
Just like, hey, I'll meet you in 10 minutes at-
Meet me in 10 minutes at Starbucks.
On the corner.
That's not a date.
On the corner.
Can we just go on a proper date for a second?
Like can we just go on a proper date?
Before investing the time in the date,
see if there's a track, if there's chemistry.
I'm always like you do a FaceTime date.
Right, right.
You don't have to meet up at a Starbucks.
Yeah.
Do a FaceTime date.
Make sure that person's a real person.
Not catfishing.
To see if you have chemistry
when you're actually talking face to face, right?
And then if you wanna meet up, meet up.
I mean, people aren't like, I don't know,
are they their natural selves on a-
On a first date, is anybody their natural selves
on a first date or a video or anything
like that?
You gotta work through-
Starbucks.
the FaceTime first date does,
it shows you how that person's living,
what their background is.
You know what I'm saying?
They could be anywhere, though.
Just a drink, like a quick happy hour drink.
Like in the middle of the day, right?
Like after work, after work.
Let's meet, like in New York,
you'd go after work.
Yeah, that's easy to do.
Yeah, I don't see why not.
Meet for a quick drink.
A sit-down dinner is something
completely different.
You say hello, you're like, okay.
That in and of itself is a commitment.
First date, right?
Wouldn't you say that's
The proper first date.
That's a proper first date.
But there should be like a free first date.
Do you know what I mean?
Like a little meet up before the actual meet up.
Right.
Which would be like, let's go grab a cocktail for happy hour somewhere.
Yes, exactly.
And some appetizers.
For coffee or a FaceTime.
Yeah, something small like that.
And work your way up to the actual proper sit down dinner.
My friend though, she was single.
And she was meeting up with a guy that she had met online.
And had never done the FaceTime or the pre-date or anything like that.
And she saw him driving into the parking lot.
And she called me.
She was like, he does not look a thing like...
I know it's him, but he doesn't look
a thing like he did in his profile picture.
What do I do?
And I'm like, run.
Oh, God.
And she left.
But did she at least message him?
Like, hey, sorry.
I mean, I don't know how she handled it, but she left.
She didn't...
Maybe when he actually got out of the car, he looked better.
I doubt it.
Or maybe worse.
maybe worse that's right i told you about
that person that used to work in the newsroom here
would go for coffee down the street
and she'd meet her oh yeah that's right oh yeah she's very
efficient with her time wait like during work hours
on her lunch break would go on the lunch
break how'd it go well the one time she went out
there she went out she came back i said how'd it
go. She's like, I walk in and the guy's like, wow, you're short.
I said, well, what did
you say? She said, you're short.
I don't know who you're talking about, but
I like her. She's very efficient. Yeah, efficient.
That's right. You get it done. Move them through.
Be right back. That's what you got to do.
But a green card of work. It's right, right, right, right, right.
She's working it. Yeah. Welcome back. The horse-drawn carriages
were once an iconic part of Central Park,
but New York City could soon be banning them.
They've been they've been talking about this for years. Oh my gosh.
Yeah. Yeah. The city's mayor and the city council speaker have reached
an agreement on legislation that will phase out
and ban horse carriages citywide. According to City Hall,
the bill will potentially include job placement training,
career counseling and financial compensation for the drivers
as well as stronger protection for the horses themselves.
The union that represents the carriage driver says it will sue
the city if this bill passes.
The carriages have been an attraction for more than 160 years.
I do always feel bad for the horses,
especially on like a hot day in New York.
And they have those buckets of water and the food.
If you ever talk to them, they will tell you that this is their side.
Right.
They say that these horses are cared for and taken care
of more than any other horse that you would imagine.
Like, they really love their horses.
I would also imagine it's a different kind of horse because you have
to, like, these horses have to get used to all the noise.
True.
And the traffic.
True.
And they have to be calm while all this is happening.
So they're used to the ambient, you know, frenetic energy of the city.
Right.
They have those blinders on.
I don't know what they're called.
Yeah, I know what you're talking about.
Over their eyes?
Mm-hmm.
Well, now they've gone from the horse carriages to the e-bike pedicabs.
The pedicabs.
Right.
Have you ever been in a pedicab before?
I did that on New Year's Eve.
And they're all lit up with all that.
$174.
What?
To go 20 blocks, $174.
Was it an e-peddy bike?
You didn't haggle enough.
I didn't haggle, but you know what?
It was honestly, they played Sinatra.
We were going by Central Park.
It was honestly, we were giggling.
Was he pedaling or was it an e-bike?
I forget.
I think he was pedaling, actually.
Okay, so he was working for his money.
Yeah, it took a while.
It took a while.
It took a while to get home.
That's part of it.
You see the sights.
That's right.
But still, $174.
Yeah, well, back then it was illegal when I lived there.
It was what?
It was illegal, so it wasn't like everywhere.
Oh, yeah.
Like it is now, apparently.
Now it's like all Fifth Avenue.
And now it'll be probably in Central Park
if the horses are gone, right?
All right, well, mental health experts say helicopter grandparents
are becoming a familiar challenge for some moms and dads.
So who are we talking about here?
Those grandparents who frequently weigh in on parenting decisions
or stay heavily involved in day-to-day family life.
While that support can ease stress
and strengthen bonds with the grandkids,
it can lead to tension when the adults are in the room.
Especially experts say you can avoid some
of this by setting clear boundaries early on.
Another helpful tip,
stay calm during conversations and do it away from the children.
it's hard to argue with grandparents
who are helping you out you know it is yeah because
if you have family who lives far away
and they can't always be there like when you really need
them it is it is greatly appreciated
but when they are there yeah how are you gonna how are
you gonna set those boundaries right
that's it's really appreciate your help but but yeah but see
that's the thing i know say
and and yeah two things can be true at the same time your help
and stay out of my business consideration yeah my own business
stay in your lane i don't need your help yeah
but i do today but yeah but not in this area right yeah
okay next tuesday i will need your help yeah
that's right can you drive a little better um
Anyway, okay, that was my-
That's your own personal, but no.
Coming up, we're going to check in with Stu in Skybox.
It's time to spot our Stu,
and there he is.
Good morning, Stu.
Good morning, ladies and Bob.
You know, I got to tell you, I wanted to talk about my hair
and the fact that you guys didn't notice it.
And, you know, this is a big thing with ladies, because if you don't
notice their hair and say something about their hair, it's a problem.
But I thought you might not have said anything.
Yeah. You can't even say it.
What?
Yeah, but I thought maybe it was just because you guys were like,
well, maybe I'm embarrassed by it or something, but I'm definitely not.
You got a whole look going on.
Anyways, but- Wait, turn around.
Can you turn your head?
Let's see, does this come with like a scented oil and-
Wow.
My God.
What inspired this?
No scented oil, no scented oil.
What inspired this?
a conversation about how i used to have cornrows
and would i get cornrows and it
went from that to well i can hook you up
and then i got cornrows so that's the reason why i got them
again it's like and you know i you know i know bob
i know bob you're there but uh it i'm i'm doing
the uh i'm doing the grand marshal thing uh on the zoo the days
which was probably going to be
another starting stew but i probably won't have the cornrows for it
and i feel bad about that
because he's probably going to go for more than a couple of weeks.
That's more like a summer look, right?
Like Bo Derek.
It is Bo Derek.
You know, it's not inspired by Bo Derek.
I asked for the beads.
I said, could I get some beads on there?
And they're like, no, we're drawing the line there.
But anyways, look, I got something really cool for spotting, Stu,
and it's very timely.
And I think somebody's going to roll the tape.
And we're going out to the Barton Heliport.
Stu, what is Barton Heliport?
Well, you know what?
we got the winds coming and we also we're always in fire season
and so let's talk about LA County
fire helicopters yes you know what those machines
are amazing they're awesome and LA County Fire
look i love you LA City but when it comes to wildfires
and putting them out with aircraft
LA County those are the guys
and gals to turn to so Barton Heliport where is it you know what it
is tucked away right by Whiteman Airport in the city
of Pacoima it's been there since 1978 that's
when it all started and it has its own identifier
so it actually isn't Whiteman it has it's it's it's
it's one more it's it's its own airport and it's
so it has its own identifier it is its own airport
and it is the base for where the LA County Fire has
their helicopters they do training there and
they have the three things that they do the best search
and rescue aerial firefighting no doubt
about that and medical transport they train there they keep
their machines there they also do a lot
of search and rescue tactics
and training there as well now LA County Fire Department they've got
five helicopter five Firehawks but they
also have five 412s Barton is the main spot where they keep
them but they also have them up at Camp Nine Camp Eight out
in Malibu bracket that's out by lake
put out by Puddingstone
and then they have another base up in Palmdale that would be a fire
station 129 you know this all started Elliott
County Fire Department got their first helicopter
in 1957 single pilot Bell 47 it's
a small helicopter 100 gallons of water today they've
got 10 aircraft total five of them firehawks five
of them 412s these helicopters the firehawks at
least can carry a thousand gallons
and fill themselves up on their own in less than a minute
that is pretty impressive they have crews they have
the uh they have two pilots and also a um
oh what's the guy called well they have a third guy
in there as well an engineer the engineer is
in there as well it is amazing stuff
and you got to give it hats off to the LA County Fire Department
these guys when it comes to aerial stuff
and fighting fires they are the go-to guys and gals
and of course we also do some contract stuff we might
do a spotting stew on that one as well
but you know what LA County Fire they're amazing right there
by Whiteman tucked away i bet you a
lot of people don't even know it's there
and again hats off to those crews and hopefully they won't
be too busy this weekend i was gonna say yeah
they're brave they're cavalier and hopefully we
We won't need them for the next couple of days, right?
Just to know that they're there.
They're prepared.
All right, Stu.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Okay, so what happens
to kids' Halloween costumes the morning after?
The candy's the focus, right?
The costumes, not so much.
The waste that comes with Halloween helped inspire
our next guest's program called the Ultimate Halloween Swap.
such a great idea since costumes are made out of synthetic
or other materials that
are tough to recycle sustainable fashion advocate
Lexi Silverstein came up with the ultimate
Halloween swap. Such a good idea, it lets families
drop off costumes they're done with and then pick
out new to them once for free. Lexi's here now
to talk all about it. What a great idea
I think about this every single year, I'm like we have
these new Halloween costumes we wear
for like a couple of hours, literally a few hours,
a picture, and then we're done.
Okay. So, so this was your idea, right?
How long ago and where'd it come from?
Yeah. Well, I love Halloween. First of all, it's so much fun.
You get to dress up and eat candy.
What's better than that.
But I found two main issues with it, how expensive it was, how much,
like outrageous amounts of money we're spending on it.
And then the amount of environmental waste
that it causes. So about 20 years ago,
people were spending like $50 on Halloween. And nowadays,
we're spending more than double than that.
And that's real money at a time where everything
is so expensive from our gas to our groceries
to our Halloween costumes. And then not only that,
but we're wearing it, we're buying it,
and then we're wearing it once and we're getting rid of it.
So it's unsustainable for the environment
and unsustainable for our bank accounts.
And so I came up with the ultimate Halloween swap.
I started it last year, and this year we've grown to bigger and better.
And, yeah, you can drop off any previous Halloween costumes
you might have sitting around in your house, in your closet.
And then you can go and also pick some up for free.
So really tackling those two issues.
That's a great idea.
Do you do it before Halloween?
Because, you know, people are looking for their new costumes now.
When can they go out and go and swap stuff?
Or what if you have nothing to swap,
can they go out and then see what you've got in storage?
Yeah, completely.
So it's all throughout the month of October and then a week after.
And so if you are looking for a Halloween costume,
totally feel free to stop by any of our partner locations,
which is Heal the Bay Aquarium under the Santa Monica Pier,
the Opera Santa Barbara, Occidental College, and Girls Inc. Los Angeles
that has two participating elementary schools.
and you can drop off your costumes and pick them up for free
and you do not have to drop off a costume.
So you don't have to necessarily swap it if you don't.
Totally feel free to stop by and pick them up for free.
Honestly, I have like a mound of Halloween costumes under my bed.
Yeah.
I don't know why I saved them, but maybe for that reason,
just in case anybody else might want to wear them.
So you can go and essentially just give
this place your Halloween costume,
but maybe not take a costume of your own, right?
Yeah, you don't have to.
Essentially donate, right?
Go donate, I will be sorting them at the end of the year.
And if they are able to be reused,
they will be donated for years to come.
Yeah.
So that hopefully that Halloween costume can be worn for
two Halloweens or three Halloweens or 20 Halloweens.
I can't wait to see somebody walking around
in one of those gas station wacky
waiver balloons cuz I have one of those.
My gosh.
It depends on where you get them from, but they're expensive.
They're so, so, so expensive.
And most of these Halloween costumes,
like 80% of them are made up of polyester or plastic.
And so when you get rid of them,
they're going to haunt our landfills for centuries to come.
So this is a great way of keeping it in circulation,
making sure you're getting as much use of it as possible,
while also making it more accessible to everybody
because Halloween's so fun.
I see this after the West Hollywood Carnival
because I live in that neighborhood.
After the carnival, like literally the morning after,
there are just costumes all over the streets.
I can't believe that people are just wearing it
and they're like, I'm done.
I'm just going to throw this off.
And that's why I can't believe it.
What are we doing?
What's happening?
I also can't believe that you said you sort all this stuff yourself.
Like a one person operation or like you've got to have,
it's impossible to go through all of this stuff.
I go through all the costumes myself.
We were very lucky to have the Los Angeles Clippers drop
off some costumes like January, February of this year.
and I sorted through all of them.
We got some really amazing donations
and then I've put them all in the boxes
so that some of those are available for pickup
at the donation places.
And I got to see firsthand
some of the kids going through.
It's really amazing.
You can see the joy on their face
and they're like,
Mom, Dad, can I take this home?
And they're like, how much is it?
And I'm like, girl, it's free.
And then on top of that,
I've had parents that have said
that they were really worried
about having to spend money for Halloween
And so that this has been a really helpful and amazing.
I feel like Halloween is more.
It's just getting more and more popular every year.
Trick or treat's huge.
But then Halloween itself is like, you know, you're talking
about summerween, like you're creeping into other seasons.
It's just become like a huge business.
Yeah.
Especially like right now, like you
were saying, gas prices are so high.
People just do not have the money
for these expensive Halloween costumes.
And that's what we're really trying to expand to.
So I really want this to be more than just for Halloween.
And when you think of the times of years where there's all
these items that we use once like
graduation gowns or just items that we're spending a lot of money.
So back to school season, back to work season,
winter coat season, prom.
So my goal is to grow this and have,
first of all, have drop off locations all around
America or even the world if I'm getting really out
that you got to get those are goals.
But yeah, I think that we're trying to make it bigger and better.
And if you want to partner totally,
feel free to reach out to me on my Instagram.
Excellent.
Lexi, thank you.
And by the way, right here on your screen,
this is where you can check out the ultimate Halloween swap.
Heal the Bay Aquarium, Opera Santa Barbara,
Occidental College, Girls Inc.
L.A., Knox Elementary and 93rd Street Elementary.
And the hour is right there on your screen.
The program lasts long after Halloween.
Swap days now through November the 6th.
Drop off boxes will be available through select locations.
And again, there's her Instagram, well, here's a website, first of all,
lexysilverstein.com, and then her Instagram is lexysilverstein.
What are some of the cute costumes you're seeing this year
that you've seen dropped off, anything really unique?
We saw a huge blow-up pumpkin at Heal the Bay Aquarium, and I was like,
oh my gosh, I really hope someone bags that, that would be really fun.
We saw a lot of Star Wars costumes.
Oh, of course.
Timeless.
So many options, yeah.
Yep, a lot of timeless costumes.
Well, it's our story.
Great idea.
Thank you.
In addition, three-foot-wide takeout bag,
large enough to hold an entire tuba.
The 170-liter big, big-back bag.
Big, blank bag.
Rhymes with class.
Big class bag was launched to promote the chain's group family meals.
Chipotle Rewards members can enter sweepstakes by purchasing-
Now I want this bag.
You just have to buy one family meal
through the app or the website
through November 10th.
See, now that's a bag
that you can actually fit something in.
That's for utility.
Those tiny Trader Joe's bags
you guys are going crazy over.
You guys!
You're the one who picks it up for us.
Hey, are the Halloween ones out?
My daughter wants them.
They were out like two weeks ago.
Now they're out.
Oh, they're out.
The Christmas ones are out now.
The little ones?
Yeah, the Halloween one.
Yeah, they're out, Al.
You missed out.
We did the whole story on everything.
What do you mean?
They're all, like, they're drained?
Like, they're gone?
That's it?
Well, they're going to be gone within,
like, three days if you don't go get them.
Okay, go get them.
Yeah.
They're gone.
We'll go try to find a Chipotle bag.
But you're our plug.
Bob, what are we going to do now?
Tell me which one she wants.
Okay.
I have the hookup.
A woman's cake order is going viral.
Here it is.
She posted her Carvel cake.
I love Carvel.
Oh, the whale cakes, yeah.
Saying, what I asked them to write
on my husband's birthday cake versus what we got.
Okay.
The receipt of what she reads.
Oh, run.
Big.
Wants, reads, notes.
All caps, creepy.
Can you please explain this to me?
Okay.
So she wanted whoever was decorating this cake to do run in all caps,
creepy font if possible, with pink inscription.
Yeah.
But instead they did.
They wrote all the directions.
I got you kind of like if we read prompter
be like tossed to break. Yeah
You know
Hilarious
I like it. Um, why did she want to say run maybe
that's not running a marathon or run run away from me
Well in creepy lettering. Yeah
Bestie just sent me a pic. She's tagged of my initial reaction
other people started sharing
their cake fails this woman wrote
look yellow is her favorite color thank you
she said i turned 19 on a semester at sea it
was truly the most special experience of my life
my mom had bought me this cake
and i had no idea safe to say all my friends and i were perplexed
when it came out, truly the best memory ever.
That's great, that's funny.
That's hilarious.
Then there's this one that says,
this is the cake we got for our son's-
induction into the
National Honor Society-
Congrats, Nick.
And then what?
And why can't we read it?
Like they can't, you had one job, wait.
What does it say?
National Honor Society.
Congrats, Nick.
What does the bottom word say?
What is that?
NHS is National Honor Society.
National Honor Society and I can't read the rest oh
my gosh mother no I don't know but why is it so
illegible gosh and it's bleeding over into the the other right
the decorations too anyway the ones that
do have nice penmanship I'm always impressed
and then you have to like calligraphy right right then
you have to fit it within like make sure that you the right size
so that you don't go past the right
Yeah. That would freak me out.
You know what the smart bakers do?
They put it on like a little chocolate card
and then put the chocolate on to the cake.
So if they mess up, they could just get another
little chocolate little platter thingy, right?
Yeah, that's right.
That's the best way to go. Just stick a little card in.
An edible card.
All right, buying in bulk at stores like Costco
is becoming more popular,
but unloading all of those heavy groceries can be a hassle.
So now some homeowners are finding a clever shortcut here.
They're building tiny openings called Costco doors
that connect their garage right to their kitchen or pantry.
So the idea is that instead of making multiple trips carrying
heavy boxes and giant bags of food through the house,
shoppers can pass bulk items straight out
of their cars and into their homes.
Home builders say it's a hot request for new homes right now.
I'm sure among burglars it's also a hot request.
It's like a speakeasy for your groceries.
This is happening in states like Texas because
who has the space to build a little storage?
That's right.
Like a specialty door.
Right.
Area where you go through.
I mean, you know.
And the money to do so.
In Texas when you have like these giant homes or whatever.
Literally the sky's the limit.
And space is no limit.
Right.
Right.
Everything's bigger in Texas.
It's not happening here.
Hey, don't forget.
Game three.
NLCS.
Tonight.
5 p.m.
We've got to bring home a win this time, all right?
You can see the game on FS1.
Let's go, Dodgers.
We'll have post-game coverage all throughout the night here on Fox 11.
Let's go, Dodgers.
Let's go, Dodgers.
Why are you not clapping?
Where's your pom-poms?
Get the spirits.
Where are my pom-poms?
Get her pom-poms.
I need my poms.
We got them.
We got them.
All for nothing.
All for nothing.
Yay!
All right, Bob.
Come on.
Come on.
Let's do it.
Get you one.
There you go.
Sandra gets you one, be in the spirit.
Come on, let's go Dodgers.
What a hype guy you are, look at that, I know.
