Multiple people injured in shooting at Oregon elementary school, suspect fatally shot: Police

This is an ABC News special report. Now reporting, David Muir. Good evening. We're coming on the air a little bit earlier than normal because there has been just a news conference our team has been listening in concerning this elementary school shooting in Bend, Oregon. These are some of the images we have at this hour. Police have responded to reports of an active shooter at the Silver Rail Elementary School again in Bend, Oregon. We're told multiple children are among the injured. There's no word on their conditions, but we wanted to play just a short piece of what police said just moments ago. This is Sheila Miller of the Bend Oregon Police Department. Let's listen. We received the first report at 1259 of a shooter outside of the building shooting into a car, and within about a minute, we were receiving multiple 911 calls from within the school. Our officers were on scene at 1:02, and the shooter was down seconds later. The school was placed on lockdown for a time. Of course, a familiar scene we have seen play out across this country as parents rushed to get their children. At this hour, all we've been told by the Bend, Oregon Police Department is that shooter is now down, taken down potentially by a bystander, and that there were multiple children injured. Again, no word on their conditions. We're working on this for World News Tonight, but in the meantime, I want to bring in our chief investigative correspondent, Aaron Kutsurisky. Aaron, what more have you learned? I know you were listening in. What do we know? It was only about three minutes that this lasted, David, but in that time, The police in Bend, Oregon say there were multiple victims, among them children. At least two people were transported to the hospital. Their conditions are not yet known. This all started just before 1 p.m. this afternoon Pacific time when police said they were called to the Silver Rail Elementary School there in Bend for reports of a shot fired into a car outside the school. From there, though, the 911 dispatchers were lit up with calls from inside the schools. suggesting the shooter made it inside the building. That's where he was found dead, and police said it's possible officers killed him, but also possible bystanders shot and killed the shooter. We don't know how many shots the shooter was able to get off in those three minutes, but the police did say there were multiple victims, including children. The conditions are not yet known, but the shooter is down. There are about 450 students at Silver Rail Elementary School, about 40 staff members, The police are now going room by room to clear it and telling parents to catch up at a reunification center. Just want to underscore how quickly police were on the scene here. Stay with us as we look at these pictures, Aaron. We know that the call came in at 12:59 about a shot fired into a car. Aaron mentioned that officers were on the scene by 102. And during that small window of time, calls began to come in about shots fired at that school, in fact, inside the school building. And again, those reports now. Multiple children injured, but Aaron, they've given no condition on the children other than the fact that two have been taken to the hospital? All we know are two of the victims were taken to the hospital. In what condition, we don't know, and whether they were both children, the police have not said yet, but with about 500 people inside that building that you see there on the screen, David, it is going to take some time to go room by room, clear it all, and get everybody out safely.
