From Fox 5 New York, this is Good Day Weekend.
Good morning and welcome to Good Day Weekend.
Today is Saturday, October 24th.
I'm Kelly Kennedy in the Fox 5 Newsroom.
Thanks for joining us live on the Fox local app.
We begin now with a chaotic scene in Queens
that ended with a police-involved shooting.
Now, this all unfolded just before 10
o'clock last night in South Ozone Park.
Detectives say they were called to a home invasion
and a stabbing at a residence on 149th Street.
Now, once on the scene,
police say no one answered the front or the back doors.
That's when two men appeared at a second floor window.
One of them had visible injuries.
He told officers he'd been stabbed by his uncle and he couldn't come
downstairs to open the door because that's where the uncle was.
Now, according to police, when the officers arrived, then police say
a woman appeared at a third-floor window saying she couldn't let them
in either, but she did throw down a set of keys to officers.
Cops then entered the home, and that's when they heard screams.
They then found two males and a female in a third-floor bedroom,
and according to detectives,
the officers then demanded to see their hands.
Those men complied, but the women did not.
Officers say that she moved towards them with a knife in her hand.
The still did not comply and moved in the direction
of the officers with a knife in her hand.
She was within several feet of the officers
when an officer discharged his firearm, striking her.
She fell to the ground.
An officer deployed his taser and another officer recovered the knife.
Police say that woman is in stable condition and that she
and the three men were all stabbed and taken to local hospitals.
Now, according to authorities, all four knew each other,
but right now their exact relationship is unclear.
Well, a federal judge has denied the request to release Oscar Belgal,
the man who was shot and detained by ICE agents in Marble Hill.
The Legal Aid Society was working on his release,
citing medical conditions, including a bullet still lodged in his neck.
The judge says the 28-year-old is receiving adequate medical attention
while he's detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
Well, early voting kicks off today in New York and New Jersey
as we're now less than two weeks away from the midterm elections.
Mayor Mamdani expected to cast his ballot
at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Now, that's just one of several polling locations in the city.
Those locations are open from 9 to 5 this weekend.
Early voting lasts until Monday, November 1st,
and Election Day is the next day.
And with early voting underway, a new voting machine recently made
its debut in some Long Island counties.
Fox 5's Jody Goldberg gives us a look at the new tech
and explains how it works.
The machines have changed.
The technology has evolved.
And now in Suffolk County, voting is right at your fingertips.
It's so user-friendly.
No more filling in bubbles here.
are going to place their ballot.
The ballot card identifies a person's district so the right races
appear on the screen and from there choose your language,
text size and tap to vote. A voter will
select their candidate and should they change their mind
and want to vote on a different party
line they have to deselect to reselect.
I forgot the proposal and I hit print and review. It tells
your additional choices are available.
And once you're done, the machine prints your completed
ballot on your card to review your choices before officially casting
your vote. And just like in the
past, election inspectors aren't allowed inside the voting booth,
but there's this help button
here if you need guidance.
And there's also a designated area where they could stand to give
you instructions without compromising the integrity of your vote.
And over in Nassau County, voters
will see some changes there too, including a double-sided ballot.
One side of the ballot will
have the governor to our county legislator,
and the flip side will have the judicial races.
Nassau Board of Election officials say this means more room
for candidates' names and bigger bubbles
to fill in. After 16 years, Nassau's
also replacing its voting machines. The machines now are newer,
they're more efficient and lighter.
And changes won't just be noticeable at the polls,
but also after they close the inspectors would bring
the results to the local police precinct
and then the police would bring it here
to Mineola what we're going to do now is dispatch
board of elections personnel to the police precincts
so we can get the results and put
them in the computer right there
so whether it's casting a ballot or counting the votes
election officials are hoping these changes make
the process smoother from start to finish
On Long Island, Jody Goldberg, Fox 5 News.
Jody, thank you.
And let's take a look now at your weekend weather.
Today is mostly sunny with temperatures in the low 60s.
Tonight, we drop to around 40 degrees, a little bit chilly.
Tomorrow, looking like another sunny day with temps in the mid 60s.
Well, in health news, scientists say
a new experimental cancer vaccine for melanoma
could be a breakthrough in fighting cancer.
According to a study by drug makers Moderna and Merck,
the vaccine treatment, along with surgery, reduced the risk
of melanoma reappearing two years after surgery by 42 percent.
Now, experts say the vaccine uses the same highly prized
mRNA technology that's in some COVID-19 vaccines.
Cancer vaccines are designed to teach the immune system how
or to re-teach the immune system, re-educate it,
re-engage it so that it can attack the cancer.
Scientists are studying similar vaccines for other forms
of cancer like pancreatic and some brain cancer.
Well, this year is flying by, isn't it?
And believe it or not, the holidays are right around the corner.
And the National Retail Federation says Americans will
be spending big this year.
It predicts people will spend more than $1 trillion
between November 1st through December 31st this year.
But it says much of that increase will
be driven by higher prices due to inflation.
Business experts say many consumers no longer wait
for Black Friday deals to start their holiday shopping.
Plus, there's a new trend this year.
There's a lot of nostalgic kind of backlash to technology
in some sense, like Polaroid cameras made a comeback.
record players, CD players, even I love that I've actually
been looking to get my hands on a retro
TV, you know the ones that can actually play VHS
tapes, they're pretty pricey though. Also a quick
warning to those who are hunting
for deals online, make sure you look out for scams. Experts say the
percentage overall for online info that's fake is 50
and about 30% of reviews are fake too, so you've
got to be careful. Well, it was a big moment
in the tech world as Apple's first ever foldable phone
officially hit stores. Wow, that really brings back some memories.
I miss my flip phone. And
people from all over the world lined up to be among
the very first people to get their hands
on it. Antoine Lewis spoke with some of them
at Apple's flagship store over in Midtown. The lines
formed early outside of Apple's flagship store in Midtown
and not just New Yorkers. We're from
Australia. We just came last night
and on a whim we said let's go see the queue. We weren't actually
expecting it to line up
but it was so exciting that we just we convinced each other to stay and
join in. Joining others ready to get their hands
on Apple's new iPhone Duo. I got it right here so
very very excited, so I've yet to actually play around with it
but I'm in awe of a phone that can
open now. The phone marks new territory for Apple.
It's the company's first foldable phone.
It opens to an impressive 7.6-inch display screen,
which some liken to a mini iPad. The
company says it has a more advanced camera,
a new iOS operating system, and is the thinnest iPhone
ever made. I'm excited. Very excited.
I think I'm the first person for the iPhone Duo. Rival
companies like Samsung actually beat Apple
to the foldable phone market, which put a lot of
pressure on Apple to up the ante as far as bells and whistles go.
The company's reputation as the
leader in the smartphone game helped online
pre-orders sell out almost instantly ahead of
Friday's official release.
Mark Goulier actually got in line just after midnight Thursday to pick
up his. I've never had a foldable
and I've been waiting for this for more than a year
so this day means a lot to me and I wanted to make it memorable
and I wanted to make sure I'm
number one, which is why I came as early as I did.
Omar Niazi came from Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.
I've had this iPhone 15.
I love it too, but you know, this is a new product
from Apple and I'm always trying new stuff.
I'm usually an early adopter of interesting things,
so I figured I'd give it a shot.
I'm in tech too, so it kind of made sense.
So you're picking it up for your friend?
Yeah.
Is he at work?
Where's your friend?
In South Africa.
You gonna mail it?
I'm gonna take it back.
I'm here on holiday.
All right, so we have to talk about the price tag.
It starts at $1,900 and can go as much
as $3,000 depending upon the storage capacity that you select.
Reporting from Midtown, Antoine Lewis, Fox 5 News.
Well, an apple a day, how about 55 different varieties of apples?
Grow NYC is celebrating apple season
with its annual Cider Village at the Union Square Green Market.
Visitors enjoyed cooking demonstrations
and even took part in an apple cider donut eating contest.
Sounds yummy.
Organizers say New York's cider industry has grown
more than 2,400 percent over the past decade.
Well, don't go away. We'll be right back.
But first, here's a look at the seven-day forecast and your week ahead.
Looks like a gorgeous week of fall weather.
Lots of sunshine, but it's looking
a little cooler towards the end of the week.
Stay with us.
