Tonight, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper
is recovering in the hospital after a pickup
truck slammed directly into his park cruiser on State Road 429.
Troopers say his emergency
lights were flashing in an active work zone.
Larissa Leone is live in the alert center
tonight. Larissa, this is really scary,
but troopers are not the only ones who face this
type of situation. Yeah, Luann, that's right.
From tow truck drivers to first responders,
they all share the same message.
There are things you can do on the road to ensure they
make it home to their families safely.
The FHP trooper flown to the hospital with serious
injuries. This is the wreckage of that car
and troopers say his patrol car was hit by the driver
of a pickup truck that did not move over for an active work zone.
The driver of that truck also
rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.
According to Florida law, drivers must move over
for vehicles on the side of the road.
If you cannot move over safely, you must slow down to
20 miles per hour below the speed limit.
Unfortunately, experts say not moving over is
becoming a big problem.
Last year, FHP says there were 215 crashes involving
drivers who did not move over
and more than 17,000 tickets were written along
with plenty of close calls. Sometimes I got
to jump on the bed because you know
they get real close especially
on the on the 417 as well you know they drive
crazy up there too. Tow truck operator
Kevin Ross says drivers routinely don't
change lanes and don't give them enough room.
It gets pretty dangerous for us and
you know we should matter a little more than just
a guy on the side of the road.
His co-worker, Scott Marvin,
says the message is simple and life-saving.
You can't move over, just slow down.
None of us cut it short on lights.
You can't tell me you don't see the trucks on the side of the road.
It's just, you know, we all got families at home waiting on us.
FHP says charges remain pending against the driver
of the pickup truck that hit the trooper.
