A Northwest ISD middle school is facing making changes after
another dislodged bullet was found on its tennis court.
The brand new middle school is not far from a gun range,
and this isn't the first time something like this has happened.
Fox 4's Lori Brown joins us to explain
the action the district is taking.
Lori.
Clarice, the superintendent told parents
that all outdoor activities at the back of the school
will be temporarily relocated.
Buses will also drop students off on a different side of the
building and outdoor activities will take place
in the front of the school or inside. But this
is not easing the concern for many parents. I don't need any parent.
Should have to drop the child off
at school wondering whether a stray bullet's gonna come
on campus or not. Nick Court's seventh grade
son attends Barksdale Middle School where a
coach found a third stray bullet Wednesday.
According to a court petition, a construction
crew saw the first bullet hit
the school's brick exterior May 9th at around 3.10 PM.
The second bullet busted the window of the press box
at the football stadium around July 28th.
The school is about one mile north
of Quail Creek gun range in business since 1980.
The 50-yard and 100-yard rifle range is pointed directly at the school.
Court says he is a gun owner and supports responsible gun ownership.
He says he and his son regularly shoot at Quail Creek Gun Range.
He says one of the fundamental firearm safety rules
is to know what's beyond your target.
Somebody made the decision to build
a school near Gun Range. It's been operating
We're in Cincinnati, Connecticut.
Who approved it? What safety studies were done
and why can nobody find them?
I reached out to Northwest ISD to ask what
if any studies were done before the district
chose the site for the school.
I also asked what dates the school board discussed any
potential dangers associated with the site.
A spokesperson wrote that they can't comment
due to active litigation.
In August, a judge granted a restraining order restricting certain
types of firearms and bullets at the gun range.
Even a .22 caliber with the right trajectory
Can reach.
1.2 miles easily. To me,
they spent $115 million to build a school and can't produce any kind of
surveys that show a safe to do zone.
And moving from the back of the school,
obviously they're acknowledging the problem.
In a court document, the district says
the owner of the gun range agreed that it
was possible for an individual to
elevate a firearm sufficiently to fire a bullet over the existing bird.
I don't care how much money they spent building the school.
I don't care how difficult it would
be to move the students.
Those are adult problems that can be figured out. But my son's life,
or any child's life for that matter,
is not worth gambling. We shouldn't have to
wait until the child gets shot before somebody takes us seriously.
An attorney for the gun range told me
in an emailed statement we're in full compliance with
state law and guidelines.
We look forward to the opportunity to examine what was found,
where it was found, when it was found and where it came from.
A temporary injunction hearing is set for next Thursday.
