The investigation into the threat
of the subsequent shooting Wednesday at the Citibank
campus in Tampa just now getting underway
and the shooter Jacob Pearson first threatened Citibank
lawyers then drove from Orlando to Tampa
to take revenge all over a $2,500 bill that was sent for
collections. After he got there he shot
and killed 41 year old Leanne Selman right when he arrived
in that courtyard area. So many questions still about
the hours in between that initial call and
And of course, the shooting.
FOX 13's Evan Axelbank is live at the Hillsborough County Sheriff's
Office to show us how this investigation is proceeding now.
So Evan, what more did you find out today about the response?
Well, the initial threat was made to the lawyer's office
that was handling the collection claim.
He had made the threat at about 9 a.m. on Wednesday and said that he
had an hour to drive to get from Orlando to the Citibank campus.
The credit lawyers called Orlando police.
They checked the home and found him gone in Orlando, but his wife said
that he left angry and didn't know where he was headed.
Well, HCSO was called at about 1155,
16 minutes before the first shots were fired.
The sheriff and Citibank officials say they
were coordinating a response to the threat
at the moment that he drove through the property.
If it's an employee or somebody associated with the organization,
they can perform what's called a behavioral threat assessment,
and they can identify key risk factors and prevent these events.
But the outsider lone attacker is very difficult to identify,
and this is something that we need to work on at the regional
and the community level because there are individuals out there like
this individual, and they are not well-intentioned.
They probably have.
Mental illness, whether it's diagnosed or undiagnosed, and they can
be very dangerous and they're hard to stop if they're determined.
Now that security analyst expects detailed investigations
from HCSO that would involve
also Orlando police and then an investigation
at Citibank to evaluate its threat response.
He also says that Citibank is going to have
to look closely at its property and to make sure
that all entry points are blocked from traffic.
The shooter was taken out by a member of their
staff there within just one minute from the time
that the gate was breached. Back to you.
All right, Evan, thank you.
