San Salvador English girl exploring El Salvador & gives honest review!
Hi guys, I've just arrived in El Salvador and I'm spending a couple of days exploring the capital
San Salvador. Now I know that if you google it it's got a bit of a bad reputation but on first
impressions everyone's been very friendly and very welcoming and I've got a big long list of
things I want to do here so I'm pretty excited to get exploring. There's a lot of markets,
there's some lovely botanic gardens, lots of nice buildings as well. The cathedral
seems to dominate the skyline so I'm going to head there as well
and hopefully meet some people and see what the city's all about. So I'm walking up towards the
cathedral now and it's an incredibly busy street as you can see there's market sellers on either
side of me. There's lots of fruit and vegetables, lots of clothes, all sorts going on and it seems
to be quite a popular place. I haven't really seen any other tourists here yet so it's mainly locals.
So a coconut, completely gutted for the juice, let all the flesh, it's only a dollar.
That is pretty good. I think we're blocking the road here though.
It's about 10 or 15 minutes and I've finally come to the cathedral, you can see it behind me.
It's absolutely huge, completely dominated the skyline, the National Palace on one side,
the National Theatre on the other. I've never seen so many people wearing cowboy hats, there seems to
be quite a big gathering at the centre there. I'm not quite sure when they take down Christmas
decorations in Central America, it's now mid-January and they're still up in full force.
It's absolutely scalding hot today, definitely getting burned, the sun's so strong here.
Lots of little food stalls that actually look like somebody's kitchen
and a lot of people have their families here cooking with them as well so it's proper home
just in a market. I love this chicken rice tea which is like a con. So tasty.
So I'm trying to find a bus to get to an area called Zona Rosa which is apparently quite a
cool area with lots of bars and cafes and I've just come across all of these crazy pinatas.
It's actually quite hard to find a bus here, even the bus drivers don't really seem to know
which bus I should get but I'm having fun exploring anyway
and lots of people are trying to help out with directions which is good.
So it's pretty hard to navigate the buses around here so I've just jumped on one of the ones that
was going in the right direction and now I'm following my GPS on my phone to see when I need
to jump off. But there's not a lot going on and it's now about half 30 and it's starting to get
quite popular, there's a lot of cool bars around here. Zona Rosa seems like a really good area to
visit, it seems very friendly, fairly safe, I've been enjoying it so far. So one of the top things
to do in Zona Rosa is to come to the micro brewery here. So I've come to try some beers,
to be honest I'm not an expert but Luis here is. I'm going to try and explain some of the flavours
and taste. We're going to start with the Amber Ale, this is called Roja here in El Salvador.
This beer has 5.3 alcohol degrees, it's quite strong, it's very strong.
Okay perfect, it's a balanced flavour between hops and malts and it's nice, it has many
fruity flavours, you just need to try it. I can try this one. Okay perfect. Okay, cheers.
Oh that's good, really nice. It's quite as strong as I was expecting. It's balanced.
The next beer you can try is, I think this is a colch beer.
And what's the difference between these? The difference is we use a
make a beer, the flavour and the taste like a white wine and we use a higher carbonation
to bring it so it tastes like a mimosa. It smells completely different as well.
They've all got really distinct flavours don't they? All the beers are different
kind of styles and have different flavours and we have like a 51 kind of flavours.
Why should we visit San Francisco?
So my final location for this evening is a bar called Republic and this is Zona Rosa again
and it's clearly very popular. It's about to get pretty busy. Everybody's been incredibly
friendly to me in the past couple of days as you can see and I'd definitely come back.
