Good afternoon from Cebu in the Philippines and what is actually our last day here.
This originally wasn't supposed to be our last day but the airlines changed our flight.
So we're flying out first thing tomorrow morning and before we leave there's something we have to
try. Something I've been dreading, I'm not gonna lie, since we got here but Julia's been really
excited about and she's been wanting to do it, wanting to do it, wanting to do it. We're here
on the last day. We need to go out of a bang. Let's try this Filipino delicacy. Let's go out on the streets.
Way to try Balut. Balut is a fertilized duck egg and it's a massive part of Filipino culture.
So it's been brought over here from China about 200 years ago and basically from what I've been
reading is that people were trying to prolong the life shelf of an egg and that's how it
came about. So now it's basically a staple here and when I was researching everything about Balut
I've been reading so many Filipinos saying like this is the first thing I try when I come back
home from you know being abroad and this that's the thing I miss the most and it's just I guess
the thing to say that if you're vegetarian or vegan or you're easily grossed out it's probably
best not to watch this video but we are incredibly excited to try it because I know it's all about
experiencing different things and for me I've been extremely excited about it because I think
it's one of the most unusual and freaky things I've ever seen and I feel like if we didn't try it
we would miss out a lot so let's go and do it. So we're on Karon street which is supposed to be the
street food center of Cebu city and apparently the Balut place has come out after five.
It's ten past five now so let's hopefully try and find one.
Hi, what is this?
Oh wow!
30 for one? Yes. Perfect.
18 days and 15 days you choose. Can I have 16 days? Okay.
The small one? Yeah. Let's start small. This is my first Balut. It's so yummy it's
really delicious here in Philippines. That's what I've heard. That's why I was so excited to try it.
And peel it off.
Then you taste the soup. Yeah. Be careful it's very hot.
Salt and vinegar. Okay. A little bit. Yes but you have to peel it off.
Peel it off. Half of it. Half of it. Okay. Put it here. Put it here.
Are you strong enough to eat that? We'll see. You're strong enough. I've been waiting for so
long to eat it. So do you know how many days it actually hatches?
21.
Okay perfect. We'll go get a beer.
Okay like that.
Obviously as you can see it tastes, it looks a bit how it looks. You know it's a bit
off-putting shall we say. But it just tastes a very strong flavor of an egg. I've actually chosen
to have 16 day old one. You can have them I think 18 days as well. And some of them I think you can
have them even up to 21 days. I think I've heard. I could be lying. But some of them you can taste
like the feathers and the beak. In this one it is quite a soft texture. There is nothing else like
oil going on. It's a bit soft. It's a really strong like eggy flavor. It looks very creamy.
It is very. It is very creamy. And this is the most popular snack here. Yes.
That's an exotic. Exotic yeah.
And you always always with salt and vinegar. Always.
Very spicy yeah. Oh good.
Yep. There's a little chick inside. Yep you've tried the chick haven't you?
Just be careful. It's very hot. You have to sip first the soup. Cheers.
Now vinegar and soup. Yeah.
The liquid tastes just like broth doesn't it? Like chicken broth.
Let's go for the main part. One looks less beaky than yours. It's a bit of a cop out isn't it?
Try that it's soft that you didn't go for the hard part.
We shall find out. That's actually really nice. It's really really creamy.
Really creamy. It's just like it's almost like you're eating a hard boiled egg. Just the yolk
you know. And then with the vinegar and the salt in there that just just adds to the flavor. That's
really really nice. And the vinegar is slightly spicy yeah. Beautiful. Nothing at all like I
expected to be honest. Is it way better than you expected? Again one of the things that it like
looks off-putting but it actually tastes good. I mean I knew it was going to be good because
it's so popular here and it's so popular all over Southeast Asia. And so many people like
eat it here every day and as I said they're like looking forward to eating it and miss it a lot so.
Yeah see why it really is like you're eating the yolk of a hard-boiled egg.
Really really nice. Really good.
Thank you so much for your help and everything. It's been lovely meeting you.
So that was actually really really tasty and really really interesting. It's such a big part
of Filipino culture and to be honest it was nothing like I was expecting. Really really
incredible and I don't know why I built it up so much. So thanks for thanks for getting me to try it.
So we are actually off to taste one more thing here in the Philippines that we haven't had yet.
Not quite as let's say exotic but equally if not more tasty. So we'll see you there.
To try something called lechon. We were actually planning to make a full video on it but because
we're leaving early we ran out of time. However we couldn't leave without trying a proper famous
lechon and apparently Cebu is the place for it. So we're right here which is apparently the fourth
best shop for lechon here in Cebu. So let's head in and try it.
Right so this is lechon which is basically suckling pig. The pig's spit roasted and roasted for hours
on a fire is doused in a sauce which makes the skin go really really crispy and yeah we've been
dying to try this for ages to be honest. But we were saving it for a video we were going to do
here in Cebu because Cebu lechon as Julia said is supposed to be the best. We're gonna dig in.
The reason we've come to this place which as Julia said is the fourth best in Cebu is because it's
actually right opposite the apartments we're staying in so it was pretty convenient.
Okay so the first thing I'm going to do I think is dig into this skin.
It's crispy skin look at it. It's absolutely amazing. Feel the crunch.
Is it the best crackling you ever had? It's so good. So the inside of the skin here is really fatty
so the fat's soaked in a lot of the oil and the outside because it's been roasted over that
open flame I guess over the barbecue has got really really crispy. Look at that you can't break it.
I broke it. That is so so good. So succulent and it's soaked in all the flavour.
Right now let's dig into the meat and this is lechon sauce it comes with apparently
which we have no idea what it is but it's amazing. Not what it is but it's amazing.
It's like a really spicy meat bouillon like a meat broth with chilli in there possibly some garlic.
Really really good and just goes with the meat perfectly and the meat itself
I say all the time but just falls apart. It's so so good.
And of course let's finish off our last meal in the Philippines with a red horse beer. When you
come to the Philippines have red horse. That is top top beer. Cheers. We are back in our apartment
and we better get on with packing. So our time in the Philippines has been absolutely great.
We've met some amazing people. People have been so welcoming. We've explored two out of over 7,000
islands so we'll definitely be back sometime soon. Cannot wait. That's 100%. We're forever grateful
for if anyone's watching from the Philippines that people are truly incredibly welcoming here
and we've been kind of overwhelmed with how... 100%. Just how people are and yeah can't wait
to be back. So thanks for watching this video and see you in the next one.
