The Brandywine Valley SPCA is caring for dozens of dogs that they say were rescued from a Delaware County home on Friday night.
Sara Smith, the senior director of communications for the Brandywine Valley SPCA, said they got a call from Marple Township Police on Friday about dogs possibly being left in a home on 1st Ave in Broomall.
Authorities and the Brandywine Valley SPCA rescued 44 dogs and puppies from a \"house of horrors\" in Delaware County. The animals were found living in filthy, unsanitary conditions without electricity. The homeowner, 67-year-old Mary Lacey, faces over 200 charges, including neglect and cruelty. The rescued dogs are now receiving medical care and will be available for adoption.
New at 11, a major animal rescue in Delaware County. Nearly 50 dogs and puppies taken from
a filthy, unsanitary home by workers with the Brandywine SPCA. Well tonight, the owner of
what neighbors called a house of horrors is facing charges. Actually, reporter Caroline
Gonnigan has the story tonight from Westchester. I don't think anybody realized what they were
walking into. 44 animals found living in squalor in this Delaware County home. Neighbors call it
a house of horrors. They watched on Friday night as dozens of dogs were pulled from the property
on First Avenue in Brewmall. And they were just evacuating animals by, you know, the armload.
The Brandywine Valley SPCA says they got a call from Marble Township Police on Friday
about dogs possibly being left in this home. When one of their humane law enforcement officers went
to check it out, he was immediately alarmed by the conditions. See little eyes peering up at him
and the smell that was pretty noticeable. Once they secured a search warrant, the SPCA worked
with local police and fire crews to rescue the 44 dogs and puppies, some of them only days and
weeks old. Honestly, we've heard the dogs barking and stuff before and never seen them outside. So
it was kind of a relief to see that they were actually getting the dogs out.
Sarah Smith with the SPCA says the home was filthy. There was no electricity and the air
quality was poor. When we visited the neighborhood today, there was a noticeable odor by the house
and flies swarming the front porch. The woman who lives here, 67 year old Mary Lacey,
is now facing charges. We filed over 200 charges in this case, pulting charges,
neglect charges. As the investigation continues, the animals, all small breed dogs,
are either in foster care or being cared for at the SPCA. Just know they're safe,
they're being taken care of, they're being treated. Huge relief for everybody on the block.
We are told that all the dogs and puppies will have to be spayed or neutered. They'll need their
vaccines and they'll need to be groomed before they can be put up for adoption. If you would
like to adopt, foster, or support these pups, just head to our website, 6abc.com.
