Almost seven o'clock on this Tuesday. Thanks for being with us. It's july the 21st. I'm Bobby Castro
and I'm Jen Lammers. Happy Tuesday everybody. Let's go over to Maria for a check on this
forecast. It's a little humid this morning walking out the door. Absolutely. I did not need
the sweater this morning. I had a tank top on. It was actually really refreshing and comfortable.
We have some clouds outside kind of a mixture of some high mid-level clouds and some sunshine.
Most of the wet weather is now to our east so depending just some really subtle changes on
the position of that ridge of high pressure we're going to pick up some of that moisture.
If not we have to wait until later this afternoon perhaps a little convective activity
in the mountains and deserts. Otherwise there's also some moisture streaming up from the south
here across parts of the bay area and the central valley and northern California. So bottom line
unless you're right there at the beach on the coast feeling a little bit of the effects of
that sea breeze you're going to feel the heat as you head farther inland. 73 in Santa Clarita
currently. 73 in Ontario. 69 in Corona. It's 60 in Big Bear but a little humid. 87 same thing in
Palm Springs. Eventually it's going to get to those triple digits again in the low desert.
108 Palm Springs. 98 in the high desert areas. I think a little drier today. 80 degrees in the
mountains but we're still going to feel the humidity. 88 in downtown LA. Well above the
average. About 100 in the valleys and the Inland Empire to the upper 70s at the coast. Remember
the high surf and the strong rope currents if you are headed to the coast. More on my forecast in
just a few moments but first let's get more from Stu up in Sky Fox and see what we can get here
with the traffic conditions outside. Hey Stu. Hey Maria. Good morning. Yeah we are definitely
bracing for that heat. Thank you for all that information. Indeed. Good morning to everybody.
We're going to talk a little bit of traffic. That's going to be the 605. Avocado Heights
is where we are. If you don't know where Avocado Heights is well we're gonna we're gonna put you
in the know. It is 605 right at the 60. Avocado Heights is very close to the El Monte area and
it is actually looking like a pretty decent drive southbound. Now we see this all the time. The more
south you go the slower the ride becomes and that's actually what's happening today as well.
Give yourself extra time on that southbound 605. No crashes just a lot of slow and go. Northbound
looking a little bit better. The reason why you're seeing some bunching up right there is
there is a transition to the 60 that might be causing some of that slowing but the northbound
looking a little bit better than the southbound lanes in the Avocado Heights Whittier area.
Sending it back to you all in the studio. Good morning. Good morning to Avocado Heights. All right
thank you Stu. Happening today the preliminary hearing set to begin for singer David. Prosecutors
will present their case in the brutal killing of 14 year old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. We have
Mario Ramirez live in downtown LA with more on what we can expect this morning. Mario. Yeah Jen
Bob we're expecting to learn new details about this case and evidence that's being presented here.
Witness testimony as well and what prosecutors will be doing today in court is trying to prove
that there's enough evidence and probable cause to move this case forward. The murder case against
the singer David to a jury trial. Now take a look you can see the 21 year old appearing for his
initial arraignment. This was back in mid-April just after his arrest. David Anthony Burke known
professionally as David pleading not guilty to charges including first degree murder,
sexual abuse of a child, and the mutilation of human remains. He's been held without bail since
his arrest and prosecutors allege the singer and Celeste began a sexual relationship in 2023
when he was 18 and she was 13. They claim she threatened to expose the relationship if he
refused to be exclusive. Investigators say her remains were found months later inside two body
bags in the front trunk of Burke's Tesla and prosecutors also say surveillance video shows
he was the last person driving that vehicle. Jurors could eventually hear about text messages
between the two that referenced sex, pregnancy, abortion, and plan b and prosecutors also say
they've gathered digital and physical evidence they believe supports their case. A former federal
prosecutor I spoke with says some of the alleged purchases could be especially damaging for the
defense here. There are reportedly purchases that David made for Postmates and Amazon under a fake
name for an inflatable tub, chainsaws, a shovel, body bag, and even a burn cage which implicate
the singer in the cover-up after the alleged murder. Ramani says the defense could try to
blame someone else but he believes that'll be a difficult argument given the prosecution's
motive that Celeste threatened to expose the relationship and damage his music career.
David's attorney again maintaining his innocence and that preliminary hearing
expected to get underway here at 9 30 this morning it could last anywhere from three to seven days
and the first court hearing proceedings getting underway shortly so we'll bring it to you for now
that's the latest here downtown and just outside the criminal courts building we'll send it back
to you. So Mario this preliminary hearing was actually delayed three times why did it take
so long to get to where we are? Yeah you'll remember it was first set this preliminary hearing
in late April it was then postponed to May, June, and now July so we're finally here and initially
the defense team David's defense was asking for a hearing as quickly as possible then they asked
the judge for more time here after mounting I should say a massive amount of evidence newly
collected evidence in the case they were clearly not as prepared as they were for that evidence
and we're talking about 40 terabytes of digital evidence phone records as well as forensic
evidence that'll be presented here so they wanted to get their ducks in a row review all of that
before the preliminary hearing got underway. Yeah so it's possible in this preliminary hearing we
could actually be seeing some new evidence that prosecutors will present as they build this case
and also do we know Mario if David is going to be in court for this hearing? Yes we are expecting
David to appear in court but a few things we should mention there are no cameras allowed
inside the courtroom we do know we have Mona Edwards a sketch artist inside the courtroom
Cristina Gonzalez will also be inside and they're about to undergo a lottery take place here for
some of the public seats they only have 10 public seats available inside not including the media so
it'll be interesting to see some of the participants here people who come out to try and
get a seat inside the courtroom. And coming up later on the show we're going to be speaking with
celebrity criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos as well as TMZ's Charles Lotsaboudier to give us
some more color on the situation Mario thank you so much. Thank you Mario. This morning crews will
begin preparing to backfill the massive sinkhole on Sunset Boulevard where that 36-inch water main
break broke last week. The LA Department of Water and Power says all the leaks around the ruptured
line have been plugged and a critical repair to the transmission line has been completed so the
focus is on that sinkhole today crews are dumping 30 truckloads of concrete and they're backfilling
that sinkhole of course it's shut down Sunset Boulevard one of the city's busiest streets next
up will be restoring the asphalt testing the quality of the water and the repaired pipeline
will also begin we'll keep an eye on that situation they're happening today the new head of the LA
Unified School District will lay out his vision for the upcoming school year Superintendent Andres
Chait is set to deliver his first opening of the school's address at Garfield High School this
morning Chait is a longtime district leader he's also a former teacher and he was appointed to the
job last month as you recall after former Superintendent Alberto Carvalho resigned
following an FBI investigation today in Altadena another family will take a step towards coming
home the San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity will break ground on its 15th rebuilt home
in the Eaton fire zone the project will kick off at 4 30 this afternoon on McNally Avenue
and it will give two fire survivors and their families a new home debt free also happening
today entertainment industry leaders will gather to tackle LA's growing runaway production crisis
local political candidates and working crew members are set to take part in a town hall
in Hollywood tonight the goal is to come up with concrete ideas to keep film and tv production
here in Southern California event organizers say local bureaucracy and strict city permitting have
turned parts of LA into some of the hardest places to shoot in the country tonight's event has been
dubbed the film here work here town hall local candidates producers directors and writers will
take part in the discussion it gets underway at 6 p.m at the lot on Formosa in Hollywood
take a short break be right back welcome back all eyes will be on the criminal court building
downtown this morning as singer David Burke returns to court in the murder case of 14
year old Celeste Rivas Hernandez as we have been reporting all morning he's accused of killing the
teenage girl whose dismembered body was found in the trunk of his car last year prosecutors
alleged the two had a romantic relationship that she had threatened to reveal Burke has pleaded
not guilty here to talk about some of the details on this case is TMZ executive producer Charles
Lotsaboudier Charles thank you for being here this morning hey Charles hey good morning Bob
Jen how you doing good good um so TMZ you guys have been all over the story since David's Tesla
was found back in September of last year have you heard anything new leading up to today's
preliminary hearing yeah this is going to be a very big day for prosecutors because
you know they have laid out the details a lot of the details that they say they have at this point
but now for this preliminary hearing they've got to produce that witnesses produce witnesses and
evidence to convince the judge to go forward and and have David stand trial for Celeste's murder
one of the first things to look for today when David arrives in court is whether or not he's in
handcuffs his attorney Blair Burke had filed a motion yesterday um requesting that he not have
handcuffs on obviously um she thinks it's not she it said in the motion she does not feel it's
necessary he's had five hearings already he has never uh in the time since he's been arrested
ever attempted to escape uh she just feels it's unnecessary and it's obviously a bad look for him
uh the judge has not ruled on that yet so that's probably something the judge will
will make a ruling on right before the hearing starts so that will be one thing to look for but
then uh the prosecutor Beth Silverman has her work cut out because at least from what they have
released up to this point um they seem to have a lot of information they have a lot of text messages
between David and Celeste that's why they believe that Celeste was threatening uh to release uh the
details of their romantic relationship which uh the prosecutors say started when Celeste was just
13 um obviously at the time of her death uh in April last year uh David was about to release
an album and so he was in the middle of promotion and the prosecutors believe that that's why
uh he killed her the evidence that they laid out though has everything leading up to Celeste
arriving at his house they say that David ordered uh an Uber to bring her uh to his home on April
23rd and that she entered the home and the way prosecutors lay it out is that he was lying in
wait and that he uh murdered her almost immediately after she entered the home we don't know how they
know that we don't know what if they have evidence that actually proves that and that's going to be
a big thing um certainly she vanished after that was not seen and there's plenty of evidence as
they've laid out at least prosecutors have said there's plenty of evidence that there that her
body was dismembered um and that the dismemberment happened at least in part at David's homes
but they don't have that moment uh as far as we know the moment that he murdered her so this could
this could take a couple of days uh as you said there's like a there's like an avalanche of
evidence there and it's possible Charles that we could see more evidence presented at this case
walk us through some of the other details the evidence that they have because there's DNA
evidence right there's also surveillance video a lot of DNA evidence uh that show of in particular
at his home um there is a um basically like a kiddie pool that had been purchased they have
all these amazon purchases of the kiddie pool they have an amazon purchase of uh also not an
amazon it was a hardware store where he bought a shovel um there were uh burn boxes that were
purchased um so all of these things and and that pool there were bits of it the according to the
medical examiner there were bits of it uh included in the body parts that were found in David's Tesla
so they believe what happened is that he dismembered her and put um the remains in this
kiddie pool in his garage to prevent the blood from getting all over uh the garage but they found
evidence of that in the uh in the remains so that is a very strong piece of evidence they also found
you know there's this whole thing about David taking a trip the night uh after he allegedly
murdered her taking a trip to Santa Barbara County a very remote part of Santa Barbara County
some of Celeste's belongings were found there including a passport that was found uh up there
and police believe that the reason he drove up there was to uh to throw away a lot of her
belongings and maybe intended to leave the body there but you know apparently did not since
the remains were found in that bag in his car there's also a ton of text messages
back and forth between the two of them and prosecutors are alleging that Celeste was only
13 years old when she started this relationship with David that he met her when she was only 11
TMZ you guys talked to her family did they know about this relationship or how much of
it did they know yeah we had spoken very early on before the remains were identified
and spoken to uh on a tip spoke to Celeste's mother she did mention to us uh that there was
a boy that she was uh that she was friends with that she was perhaps dating some and said that
his name was David um and it seems like the family was aware of David whether or not they knew
that it was a romantic relationship uh we just don't know at this point
but you know the prosecutors have said that David was well aware of her age because they
informed him that she was underage and he told them according to prosecutors he told police that
he had no idea that she was underage he didn't know her um and claimed he hadn't seen her in some
quite some time so uh that was uh you know at a point where clearly if they had told him that
David would have had an opportunity to end whatever relationship he had with uh Celeste
knowing her age uh but clearly that according to prosecutors did not happen and that's why
you have him last April ordering this uber uh that brought her to his home and prosecutors say
that was her final day and you also talked to some other people who were in this social circle
so to speak a former friend of David who confronted him about his relationship with
Celeste and she wanted to know this friend wanted to know is is Celeste underage yeah um there were
certainly people uh this friend said that it certainly appeared to them that she was underage
and and confirmed said that you know they wanted to know what how old is she the friend says that
look she is of age um that she is over 18 and you know whether or not that's going to be another
thing if David actually had uh either her fake id or one that he had actually um purchased for her
that's going to be another damning piece of evidence but we will see if prosecutors did
not mention that um in their brief that they released on you know uh several months ago
so maybe they have that evidence maybe they don't and maybe that's something that they were
holding on to for this preliminary hearing all right well no cameras inside the courtroom for
today's preliminary hearing but we will have as i'm sure you will as well a team of reporters
inside the court charles thank you thank you charles all right thank you guys over to maria
now for a check on the forecast yeah let's uh let's talk about the very active uh hurricane
season that we have right now we're watching three systems really one is just leftovers now
post-tropical elita the moisture is getting sent up with that flow out of the south into northern
california we have hurricane fausto which was upgraded yesterday now with winds of 80 miles
an hour in the east pacific moving northwest at 12 miles per hour watching this one closely
it is expected to stay a strong storm and could get very close to the hawaiian islands as we get
part of this weekend and into next week also tropical storm bertha now the second named storm
in the gulf with winds of over 50 miles per hour so watch that closely of course these storms here
in the pacific continuing to generate some swells for us so we do have a high surf advisory that
continues in effect and we'll see more of these swells coming out of these storms from the south
we've got an area of high pressure that is in control of our weather it's been there for the
better part of this month of july it's going to continue to just make subtle movements over the
four corners and the south and is pulling up all of that moisture and humidity from the south and
southeast as well as some instability so there's a chance for some showers still over the mountains
and deserts i think a little less of that today however depending on how that high moves a little
bit closer to us by midweek wednesday thursday and friday we're going to pick up more humidity
as well as instability and the heat so we have heat advisories that are in effect for the potential
for heat related illnesses this is a widespread across socal and then that extreme heat watch
which will continue uh the heat risk giving us some major heat risks as we get into the weekend
and into early next week so that just means that our body is going to experience some stress if
it's going to spend a lot of time outdoors so we want to caution you about limiting your outdoor
activities outdoors over the next several days find a cooling center if you don't have air
conditioning particularly as we get into wednesday thursday and friday 109 in india today 83 in
englewood 82 out in um in uh huntington beach area newport beach we're talking about upper 70s
here and as we get to the woodland hills uh 106 there by thursday we're going to continue the
triple digits all the way into early next week all right let's uh check in on should i send it
back to you check in okay let's check in with stew up in sky fox get another look at our freeway
hey stew hey maria good morning whatever you got i had the same thing just a moment ago this
traffic report brought to us by my home soul take a look at that 10 drive right there now they did
have a problem out here in the west covina area it was right at grand it was in the fast lane but
quick work from california highway patrol moved it out of the way and the backup well it's getting
a little bit better i'm going to show you the westbound lanes right there so those taillights
cars going away from us that's going to be westbound coming off the kellogg hill out to the
605 drive through the covina west and the regular one it's actually looking good but by the time
you hit ballroom park you're gonna be on the brakes right about the 605 it does open up after
that 605 if you're headed eastbound bring your shades that sunrise is amazing let's take a look
at some other traffic hot spots hi i'm adrian with my home soul and we want to buy your house
we buy any house in any condition no commissions no closing costs and no repairs
go to myhomesold.com for a free same day cash offer that's myhomesold.com
on camera police in irvine asking for help identifying a man accused of vandalizing
several teslas in a parking garage here's a video right here investigators say the suspect
spray painted one vehicle and damaged three others saturday night near michelson drive
and carlston avenue looks like he's filming himself a wild scene in texas after a plane
crash lands on top of a house video from above shows the yellow aircraft hanging off the home's
roof outside of houston police say the plane was trying to land at a nearby airstrip when the
aircraft crashed the pilot was hospitalized but only for minor injuries it's not clear if anybody
was inside the home though when it happened so this next story may give you a good reason to not
walk backwards and look at your phone a fedex delivery driver cooled off in an unexpected way
while dropping off a package at a home in georgia take a look
i needed that yeah i like that that was a great reaction wow that was a great reaction oh but the
phone got wet oh no i feel bad for this guy he's just doing his job i actually think he really did
need that yeah but he didn't need his phone how hot is it in georgia right now is it in georgia
i'm sure it's pretty hot i'm sure it's pretty hot it's hotlanta wherever yeah if you didn't
catch that he said i needed that the homeowner quickly went to check on him he was a good sport
the video has gone viral many people had a laugh with this although not the fedex driver
no word if his phone recovered after getting wet you know he took it out immediately right
it wasn't there for like a long time so they should go find me and get him a phone
i think it's okay put some rice on it put some rice in it
break
good morning welcome to good day la it is 7 30 on this tuesday how we live and how we feel and
remember what what beware of greeks even bearing gifts was it helen of troy that launched a
thousand ships yes the face that launched a thousand ships right that was another yeah i
that we are familiar with uh we're talking about odyssey of course i got tickets soon
uh bobby's still trying to get those tickets it's the talk of the town do a matinee we keep on
telling that that was the way to go uh for the big one anyway the 70 mm like imax yes yeah yeah
that's the way to see him uh all right good morning to you a movie theater is a good idea
to get out of the heat we have another heat wave that is building and that means hot days
warm nights translating to these heat alerts that are going to go into effect starting tomorrow
we've got some heat dangers out there and it's going to peak sometime wednesday through not just
the weekend but into early next week we even have some humidity it's going to be pretty warm up into
the mountains as well some of our lakes we have some instabilities so desert and mountain shower
chances will continue as well and we've got some hazards along the coast if you try to get away
from the heat and get to the beach we do have a high surf advisory in effect for some higher
surf that are going to be rolling in those wave heights pretty big actually four to seven feet
it was 91 degrees yesterday you can see a majority of the month a lot of red boxes here
we have had above average high temperatures and we're going to continue that trend
into this week a high of 88 expected today that's well above the average of 83 in our sunset time
it's going to be a beautiful one at 802 this evening when i come back i'll show you the
seven-day forecast plus your pictures and today's tv shout outs but first let's go to stew up in
get another look at our traffic conditions down below hey stew
are you in santa monica hey everybody yeah cyfox is actually in the air right now we're actually
going to be picking up a pursuit i see it every now and then popping on the 101 it's going to
pop out right here this is going to be that's probably him right there uh it is going to be a
wanted suspect from the santa monica area la pd ups la pd and also the uh
santa monica p and california highway patrol all in pursuit of this vehicle right now
just give me one second here and i'll be right back with you i just need to find this uh this
this pursuit again one more second we just saw it a moment ago i think that okay there they are
that's them sorry about that sorry sorry sorry it's just sometimes when you lose a car like that
it becomes very difficult that's the range rover that they're chasing right there this they started
this chase out in the valley area now santa monica pd the original uh vehicle the originals oh my
gosh what is with me today is that was the original agency that was behind this uh car
now attempted murder possible murder this is a very dangerous suspect that they are chasing right
now clearly having santa monica pd in the valley trying to pull this vehicle over that kind of
shows you there was some undercover activity going on once they tried to light them up that means the
lights and sirens that pursuit was on california highway patrol got involved because it was on the
freeways this is happening right now in that heavy traffic that we always talk about on the 101
right by vermont now california highway patrol they are in the lead right now sorry about that
and also they have lapd they have a helicopter in the air working with them but as far as santa
monica pd is still in trail because this is their suspect that they're saying is a possible homicide
suspect inside that vehicle oh uh where are you exactly right now where what are where are we
overhead yeah you see you mentioned uh was it the 405 to the 101 or or what what freeway are we
looking at right now it's all good we are on the southbound 101 just coming up on vermont right now
i'm gonna push some buttons here and hopefully we'll have some magic happen for the screen
and you guys can actually see what is going on with us sorry about that yeah and uh there you
go so you guys can cut you guys can follow along but uh but this vehicle driving very recklessly
we're just kind of getting in it we're we're falling into our into our spot up here in skybox
but you're now getting off on vermont this is also going to be a very busy area where
this vehicle is heading to clearly this person does not know the traffic patterns out here
in in the california up in the hollywood area that uh california highway patrol vehicle very
very close behind it and because this is such a dangerous suspect i wonder if they is this
going to make them want to pit this person or use that pit maybe a little bit more aggressively or
less aggressively because this is a homicide suspect this could be a person that is armed
and dangerous we've talked about this in the past if they do that pit maneuver that vehicle spins
around that would basically put the officer in a bad spot if that person behind the wheel is armed
making a little bit of that u-turn right there you can see all that traffic he cannot get back
onto the free well he can if he gets over to that uh left lane right there but definitely
some decision making going on right there the decision really should be pull over go into custody
and let's have this end peacefully right now though still kind of working his way through
traffic hasn't made contact we haven't seen any paint swap or anything like that so far
but i can tell you a lot of folks out there getting very dangerously close to a dangerous suspect
yeah you can see he can't he had a number of close calls on the freeway and some people were pulling
over to make sure that he was getting getting where he was going and you have a number of
officers behind him this is this can be potentially pretty dangerous he's been going the wrong way
uh crossing the double lines high speeds right now he's going about 83 miles per hour through
surface streets on surface streets and through intersections not paying attention and there's
a pedestrian that was just crossing um this is a really busy time of morning definitely super busy
time of the morning vermont always a busy area whoa that was a close one again oh my like you said
there's a lot of pedestrians out there as well they get running through these lights a lot of
them are green but you know what we have not seen this person slow down at all look at those speeds
those numbers now california highway patrol they're going to be a little bit more cautious
they definitely have the lapd helicopter they are talking to each other we can clearly hear that
so they might be able to back down just a little bit but does that help the public that is the big
question i always wonder to myself especially when if somebody that's driving against traffic
on a busy morning or any time that you know when there's a lot of other cars on the roadway
you always have to wonder what's the call i would never want to have that weight on my shoulder
because do you continue the pursuit do you use the lights and sirens does this person slow down
maybe because there are no lights and sirens behind him right now though that suspect still
driving very aggressively wrong side of the road seems to be his lane of choice as it would be
continuing up now we're going to wind up over towards uh las feliz boulevard and it is going
to just get more crowded as we get closer and that sharp bend that's going to be a blind bend coming
up as well hopefully we don't see any type of collision nobody injured not even that suspect
wow this there's just there's no rules with this guy the only rule is to just get away
as quickly as possible and it doesn't matter how many cars are around him uh well the shot
just froze there for a second clearly clearly a dangerous situation on multiple levels here
the fact that that this person is just driving so recklessly and at a faster speed those look
like some pedestrians students with backpacks or something i yeah they're crossing crossing
the street there on vermont which is obviously nearby here really busy there on vermont avenue
this is this is next to all of those merchants there that sometimes camp alongside uh vermont
avenue um not to mention that this is a 187 suspect wanted for murder so you don't know
whether or not the person inside is armed at all uh that's that's another situation that they
might have to deal with here too sue how far back are officers right now i'm going to take a peek
for you right now but you can kind of see that another heavy intersection right there and it
definitely seems to be just continuing northbound which is also interesting like they have an
agenda there is a california highway patrol just going through that last intersection right there
now again we only report facts and i have to be very clear about this as we were listening earlier
on about who this person is and they are talking about uh possibly this is all unconfirmed a
homicide that might have been oh my goodness that was so close okay uh this might be that
homicide that we were talking about by the pier uh but i believe yesterday we were uh
talking about it in the morning news in the parking lot do not have that
okay we're just getting information santa monica pd saying not that same one
so santa monica must be a busy place for possible uh for attempted murder suspects at any rate the
vehicle still very high speed swerving around a vehicle just stop probably to make a turn
whenever they get those side lanes right there this is what i always worry about
you've got pedestrians you've got kids out there getting ready to go to school
and just because they're on the sidewalk that doesn't mean that vehicle can't fear get into
some kind of accident and slide these are all very very dangerous and this is all what the
california highway patrol has to deal with on all of these types of situations gonna stay a bit
wider now because i did not see it pop out the other side and uh we've we've seen this in the
past whoop there goes the california highway patrol and what oh they are getting onto the
freeway okay so back onto the 10 onto the 10 freeway now onto the 10 freeway uh i was wondering
if as they were going south on vermont at some point they would they would run into he'd run
into the 10 freeway whether or not gets back off the surface streets and now onto the 10 freeway
so off the 101 down vermont now onto the 10 um and uh the driver somewhere in that in that mix
over there yeah have we lost sight definitely oh there's definitely lost sight sorry about that
guys and gals but uh we will definitely find it especially if he's on the 10 there he goes
is that him yeah that's got to be him so yeah there we go again so now on the 10 another freeway
very very busy out there yeah and climbing the 90s
yep so now we're heading closer to really starting to pick up those speeds indeed
starting to get into the downtown area uh as it goes uh eastbound um definitely eastbound on the
10 freeway and we're getting into that area where we're getting close to the east la interchange
when we get over there definitely gonna have a lot of choices uh maybe do you got the we got
interchange but again look at all that traffic the the maneuvers getting a little bit more
desperate and you also have to think that driver possibly you know got a lot of adrenaline right
now but that adrenaline will wear off and you do start to get a little bit fatigued and that those
are all things that they train when they talk about these pursuits the why i bring that all up
errors and decisions maybe getting a little too close to a vehicle and at those speeds even in
that big suv we chose to get off the freeway so we're going to be in the downtown area right now
but even in those uh with that suv a slight bump at 80 90 miles an hour could create a
catastrophic event for that vehicle back onto the freeway so i don't know does he know where he's
going or is he just grabbing every chance he can get just to make a difference but i can tell you
the helicopter above not just us that's going to be lapd they are definitely making the calls
and keeping an eye on this vehicle well the driver is definitely not stopping here seemingly
regardless of whether or not it's being pursued by these black and whites and we've seen these
speeds here now on the freeway he only seems to be increasing his speed we saw speeds upwards of 110
miles per hour so i this person's really stepping on the gas here and weaving through cars as it
goes here on the eastbound 10 continuing to go in the eastbound direction um boy and in situations
like this you really hope that everybody else is is doing what they need to do and just driving
defensively and paying attention to to this guy because he's coming up on them pretty quickly
and has no problem weaving in and out of traffic and cutting it really close with some of these
cars as he just did with that one very close a lot of close calls no paint swaps yet which is a plus
for everybody involved a lot of folks down there probably have no clue probably just going to see
this guy just whipping by them and just thinking it's just another su black suv and uh in los
angeles traffic california highway patrol they are still nearby lights and sirens the helicopter
they have been basically rendered with the task to keep an eye on them but right now still very
high speeds very close calls indeed and of course santa monica pd they want to talk to this person
they don't just want to talk to this person they want to put cuffs on this person and after seeing
all this kind of driving i kind of agree with them even if there is other reasons involved so many
close calls this morning and again a lot of innocent people just going to work you don't want
to see anybody get hurt down there but take a look at some of that traffic that probably was not the
right choice for the freeways right now i'm going to get a little bit wider emergency lane isn't
because of that freeway that he chose california highway patrol look at that slow and slow and
steady wins the race even with all those crazy high speeds the california highway patrol back
again back right behind that vehicle i'm sure those reds and blues are flashing in that rear
view mirror and those sirens at least starting to warn some of the folks around this vehicle
that something is going on so at least they're perking up their ears are perking up and they're
keeping a better eye on what's going on much slower driving which is maybe this driver starting
to make some decisions here on where he can go but the traffic really thick a lot of these people
down there just on their way to do the morning whatever and now they have to deal with this
pursuit it's probably a lot of dangerous close calls we've been watching that look at that car
hitting the brakes but the california highway patrol they're on them they are bright on his
super busy part of the 10 freeway there we're kind of locked in here we get to the east la
boyle heights area passing cesar chavez avenue um into that interchange where as stew was saying
he's got to make some decisions here to get on the five stay on the 10 um weaving in and out of
of cars there and at some point looked like he was a boxed in but now uh taking uh looks like
yep definitely staying on the 10 looks like we're going to be a solid transition right there
so this one again we just looked at it through san gabriel eastbound 10 get pretty wide open
he's going to be able to get those some of those higher speeds out there that not that that's a
good thing at all and there's a lot of other folks and like i said this guy just barreling
through traffic high speeds no regard for anybody somebody might just be making a lane change you
look in your mirror you might see that car way back there but who's thinking this guy's going 100
miles an hour so you just make your lane change that could be catastrophic this vehicle right now
into the triple digits in the morning traffic getting through the alhambra area and again
california highway patrol tasked to keep the public safe this guy the driver that vehicle also
in safe i've said that in the past law enforcement their plan is to keep everybody safe and to do
their job in this case they want to take that person into custody without any kind of incident
or injury but take a look at that wide open starting to move really well because he has
nothing around him 110 i would you know i'm not that good with the range rover but that actually
might be a limiter that's keeping him just about probably 120 is going to max out on that card
probably will not let him go any faster but right now we're we're in those solid in the triple
digits at least we're seeing some brakes and that high swerve oh that stuff always scares me
yeah yes just continues on this is a wanted suspect when you when you consider stew like
how heavy a range rover is now especially top heavy a range rover is he he really can't afford
to make many errors here and neither can anybody else that nobody else around him that's for sure
because those people are completely innocent about what's going on range rover i'm not going to do a
commercial for them but i can tell you there's a lot of tech in those vehicles and they can really
perform well but you know the the problem is the driver is the one that creates all those everything
that goes on in that car so if he does something or there's a reaction where it is too steep or too
too quick that vehicle is going to react just like anything else the safety protocols will kick in but
that car will roll like you said right now slowing down not even slowing down we're still in triple
digits in that carpool lane moving along at a good clip i'm going to get a little wider to see
if the california highway patrol yep there they are there's two of them right there i'm going to
take that chance show you where they are they've got a car in between them which is interesting in
itself but that vehicle still moving along lapd helicopter above giving information to the officers
on the ground just in case they lose sight of them and of course other agencies in the area
getting that information at that same moment just in case this guy gets off the freeway so that
wherever we might be if it's the sheriff's area monty whatever city we might be in those officers
will know about this and be ready to assist if need be all right this is now in the southwest
san gabriel valley uh near the alhambra area on the 10 freeway eastbound traffic there uh this
driver continues to travel at a very high rate of speed look at that 117 miles per hour um if
you're just joining us right now this is a pursuit that started uh about 7 15 this morning in the san
fernando valley it was santa monica police that was investigating what we believe to be a suspect
in a murder investigation and this person in this black range rover got in this vehicle and then
there was a pursuit the pursuit was on the 405 the 101 dumped onto surface streets near the
downtown area through vermont and then koreatown then dumping onto the 10 freeway eastbound lanes
and ever since this suspect has been on the 10 freeway the eastbound lanes continuing to drive
and go in that eastbound direction now passing the alhambra area into rosemead we've seen him
pull some pretty dangerous maneuvers as well crossing lanes
going through red lights now of course driving 100 plus miles an hour on the freeway nearly
missing vehicles i have to say another sharp turn sharp sharp sharp tremendous job at keeping up
with him i can't imagine the adrenaline that's pumping right now so he so he dumped out of the
freeway the driver that of the officers that just got off the freeway but those speeds really not
slowing down much you get we're about half right now but we're on surface streets take a look at
that really starting to move along san gabriel valley is where we are but you can see the
officers they have to follow a little bit more rules and of course they are trained to drive at
high speeds i venture to say the driver behind that range rover got a uh not a true not trained
at this at all that because he seems to know how to work that gas pedal that's the only thing i
can really say against traffic one more time back in that center lane and just you know that's his
personal lane it seems to be i just don't want to see anybody 90 miles an hour on surface streets
right now look at this almost look at that almost getting to 100 every now and then but i can tell
you those speeds way too fast for any surface street california highway patrol they are still
behind them and they're going to stay behind them but of course in this case we have other people
that are keeping an eye on uh on like in the area but look at that california highway patrol
they have basically upped the ante lights and sirens right behind that vehicle basically
alerting the public okay this is on san gabriel boulevard uh the driver going uh 80 plus miles
per hour uh in the southbound direction off the 10 freeway uh very shortly uh this driver will start
to try to figure out some decisions here whether or not we're going to stay on san gabriel boulevard
and head on to the 60 freeway because that is also coming up very quickly there too but we see
so many different vehicles oh my goodness through those intersections did he hit yeah oh yes he
definitely definitely he definitely made contact definitely made contact california highway patrol
that situation up against it look at these officers not our weapons out doors doors are
going on in there as well up close and personal come on out there sir let's take a look at you
there we go that's it onto the ground you go is the driver of the vehicle that is not the passenger
they're doing that uh pummel technique or they basically just get more officers on top of them
to keep that suspect subdued and also his hands in place so he does not reach for anything when
he's on the ground boy that was a that was quick and efficient i i was saying i love california
highway patrol these guys worked so fast and efficiently especially they saw that opening
and they took advantage of it immediately and teamwork that was amazing so right now you got
the suspect on the ground thank goodness no injuries to anybody involved there was something
over there at that intersection look how far away that was but i think it was just he swerved to
avoid it lost control for a little bit went up those rocks on that center in that center lane
montebello got to give them props for having them there that probably helped bring that vehicle to
a stop the california highway patrol they're the ones that stopped it suspect tremendous tremendous
work by the california highway patrol there keeping up with him going 100 plus miles an
hour making sure the public was safe as well and on those surface streets lights and sirens going
making sure that everybody in that area knew what was going on and then that takedown was so fast
i was a little i was a little nervous at that point stew because you know in situations like
this especially when you know that this is a 187 suspect a potential uh suspect in a murder
investigation and just opening the door not knowing if this person was armed to storm into the
vehicle like that that was uh certainly quite a risk uh that they took there just opening the
door and pulling someone someone out but um i would think that they had known already that
maybe he wasn't armed or they may they may have some had some other information about him but
it was uh i was i was a little nervous i think the quick quick acting quick acting for sure and
talking about quick acting got to give a shout out to our assignment desk melissa i'm not sure
freddie was involved as well but the assignment desk for sure melissa gave me the information
santa monica pd did get back to us said he is not involved in that murder that we talked about
at the pier but he was involved in a road rage incident where he definitely had a weapon at that
time that's the reason why they were calling him a possible 187 suspect but for sure california
highway patrol fast acting fast thinking and boy they just made that move took that guy down
nobody's in nobody's been hurt that suspect in custody and of course what a job indeed and uh
now santa monica pd they can talk to this guy about that road rage incident all coming to an
end here in the montebello area this is actually not too far from the 60 freeway if you know the
60 freeway it's near the shops of montebello they're very close to the freeway but this is a
suspect wanted in some sort of a murder investigation started in the san fernando
valley poured on to the 101 the 405 onto surface streets there near the downtown area near koreatown
onto the 10 freeway onto the 10 eastbound lanes and then coming to a stop here as the driver lost
control on san gabriel boulevard and um jumped a median and uh chp officers quickly moved in but
quite a dangerous dangerous pursuit that took place uh for over a half hour and a few near
misses there but luckily nobody was hurt in this pursuit coming to an end right there all right
we'll continue to watch the situation here but this is the code four they do have the
suspect in custody we'll have more good daylight after the break
