So, uh, we'll get into that later on in the show Uh, but first, how did we end up back? talking about benedict mathurin Because late last night the story started trending on social media and now has been trending all day on x and other platforms That the pelicans and benedict mathurin have been in talks for a possible sign and trade situation And if you recall if you've been a subscriber to this channel, you know, we talked about this back before the trade deadline in january Uh when mathurin was was apparently, uh an option then And I think I think we did a good job showing y'all and explaining to y'all why this was a bad This wasn't the mood to make But apparently here we are again and according to mark stein who Let's be clear here. There's a lot of conflicting reports on this And it's coming from mark stein within his own people So I'll break this down for y'all real quick so we can get a clear understanding on this Uh mark stein reported last night that he learned that there have been recent new recent negotiations Between the pelicans and restricted free agent benedict mathurin new orleans and a second unnamed suitor sources Say have shown interest in the clippers restricted free agent And one of those suitors occurring to several reports is the dallas mavericks Um another one I believe was the memphis grizzlies that I saw somewhere but i'm not sure But I did see dallas being mentioned as one of the names And I don't know that involves a three-way trade or just them trying to go get mathurin on their own Um, but then again, here's the other funny part about this situation Jake fisher who also works with mark stein Conflicted mark stein's report and then mark stein came back and said no fisher is wrong Does that make sense let me show you what I mean this was written on the style line's website, uh, Last night and then was updated. Uh within minutes of his being reporting It says that there's been little in terms of fresh rumbles regarding mathurin situation Sources say that the pelicans showed the strongest trade interest in mathurin during the season Back when indiana was exploring mathurin's market before february's trade deadline until the deal until the deal that with the pelican clippers that ultimately made zubak a pacer But i'm told that new orleans has been involved To date in mathurin's restrictive free agency Oh, should I say but i'm told that new orleans has not been involved In mathurin's reserve free agency, then you notice right there in that little paragraph that editor's note Of last night that mark stein jumped in and say hey, hold on. Hold on After the publication of this story the Steinlein heard from two sources That our intel needed to be updated because the pelicans as they did before the trade deadline Have indeed shown a recent interest in mathurin as well as an unnamed second suitor League sources relate that there has been recent dialogue between new orleans and mathurin's camp Okay So so i'm gonna let me put that back up there for you to read just in case you didn't get to read At first they would say fisher was saying No, ain't nobody been talking to mathurin about anything But then mark stein comes back and said, yeah, they have been talking about him and everything Which tells me that this this is probably I don't know if there's any smoke there and for real But again, this is something we talked about back in january Mathurin, it doesn't really fit what the pelicans have you already got a glut of three so-called three and d players And and of course the deal that that a lot of people are proposing and think is going to happen for this Is to give a signing trade To land mathurin according to chris lambert a signing trade will be the most likely route And some have proposed a herb jones for mathurin swap, which would be a disaster for the pelicans, which I agree with Because No matter how you feel about herb jones. I know a lot of y'all believe that herb jones is falling off He got his money now. He done fell off the clip and I see what y'all saying and there's a lot of people that they want to get rid of herb jones and think that that While his defense is needed the offense isn't where we thought it would be by now It hasn't taken the leap a lot of people hope But the reason why chris lambert and others including shabbat duar saying that this will be a disaster for the pelicans Is a lot of reasons and one of them is analytically mathurin is worse than uh herb jones According to uh shabbat duar on his ex account He says in a hypothetical mathurin signing trade that sends herb to the clippers The pelicans will be severely downgrading in terms of guys who impact actual winning her three-year realized, uh Uh, I forgot what that is is realized apm is plus 3.2 Mathurins is minus 2.9, which means whenever 100 possessions Her wins his matchups and also overall brings more wins to the team than mathurin did in his time The difference equal to adding a star So, you know analytically Mathurin brings you down If you're the pelicans Especially you're going to swap them up straight but down for herb jones To pay a guy like a mathurin 14 to 20 million dollars a year to be another ball stopping score first wing Who isn't a cat to shoot three-point shooter would be such a poor mistake? And again, I agree with this. This is something that we talked about back in january If you won't go see the video it's up there. It's back there. You can scroll back Because also that's the fact that and of course There are some who argue that mathurin Shoots a better three-point shot than has a better three-point percentage and has better spacing which will allow zion and others to get busy in the paint There are some folks who make that argument But did you pay attention to how he worked out with the clippers at towards the end of the season? In his 26 appearances with la he shot 20 from three and it put a massive spotlight on how bad he was off the ball He also shot 35 From three on catch and shoot threes according to nba.com Now, you know herb jones numbers ain't that much better But still I mean it makes no sense to to make a swap like this in my opinion That and then and there's a lot of people who seem to agree with my thought process on this um Again, I don't think mathurin is a terrible player. I don't think it's a bad player I just don't see how he fits Into this lineup and as especially you're running it back with this team next season I don't see how he fits into this lineup and where his slot is. I just don't If you're going to trade for herb jones, or if you're going to trade herb jones for mathurin You need a return on one of three things A starting center a high volume three-point shooter or a middle tier 3d player mathurin is none of those things So if you go get rid of herb jones, you gotta at least improve somewhere else Or find a player that's going to make up in those departments that you're going to start losing it So I I just can't see this. I just can't see this again. The math ain't mathurin And the fact that we're back on this, uh is crazy Now some who have proposed that you that you go get uh, maybe a siddique bay situation with an expiring contract that he has Don't get me wrong mathurin is a strong off the bench six man type But new orleans already has the perfect player for that role already. It's a deep bay on the great contract So it's really being redundant picking him up Picking him up and at least moving one of your players for him. One of these guys swore him now Shout to dylan mcneely uh who on x proposed that It would be great to have if you could find a way of finagle a way to get mathurin and jones together Trading herb for mathurin shouldn't even be the conversation Now i'd like to see both of them on the same team And I agree with this herb had a 116 and ben had a 117 defensive rating last year Ben actually had a better rating than herb in 24 25 by 0.1 Then isn't a slouch on defense when it's demanded Okay So if you're, you know, jamal mosley whose emphasis is going to possibly be on defense Will be on defense going into the next season. I I would like to see if you can finagle that kind of situation If you could get herb and mathurin together on the team and you have a uh defensive force, especially on the second unit And you put on with bay, you know that that could be a nasty nobody scoring situation Nasty if it goes like that, but what would the office come? I don't know But as far as the second unit, I mean that could be a nasty combination to have mathurin and herb jones Or defense and I think that would make mosley super happy and make it make him want to coach this team And also demand better defense from out of everybody else on that squad so, you know again the math ain't mattering for me, but Uh, if they can finagle a situation where you can get both of them, then maybe i'm interested If you can keep her jones and bring it mathurin then i'm interested, but that's a lot of money at 14 to 20 million dollars and of course, um The pelicans do have their uh mid-level exception that they can use to absorb mathurin Uh, if you're thinking about the money, but here's the other issue as well If you do use that mid-level exception for mathurin you're hitting the first apron you're going over that first apron luxury tax territory And you already know this team ain't doing that This team ain't doing that Unless they figure out a way to dump a little bit more salary than that Maybe the jordan hawkins you move to jordan hawkins situation and name something else. But other than that I really don't see this deal happening. I don't think this is a good deal for the pelicans uh, um unless you can finagle a way to get Mathurin and jones together and still keep jones And still keep bang me, you know But we'll see we'll keep you posted with details about that.
