This video describes a historical military confrontation between Hungarian forces and the Ottoman Empire. It details the strategic positioning of the armies, the role of light cavalry, the progression of the battle, and the catastrophic outcome for the Hungarian side, culminating in the death of King Louis II and significant losses of nobility and clergy.
The cavalry comes from behind, the infantry follows, charge!
The time will come.
A sudden call of hunger gathers someone together.
Forest, shrubland, and hills by the water nowhere interrupted.
Only a short distance lay between the mentioned place and the Danube.
A dense mat of reeds grows in the marshy, stagnant water.
A long, sloping hill stretched out in front of us, shaped like a theater's seating area.
Beyond which the Turks' emperor pitched his camp.
A small village nestled down from the dome, perhaps with a church.
Its name is a fortress. There, the enemy's artillery was positioned.
Midday skirmishes
Smaller skirmishes took place during the day.
In terms of manpower and equipment, the Hungarian army surpassed the European armies of its time.
The Turks had a multiple superiority in numbers.
Heavy cavalry was significant on both sides.
At this time, it began to gain increasing ground.
The primary strength of the Hungarian hussars and the Turkish akıncıs was their speed and mobility.
The enemy attacks the ranks, disrupting their formation.
The constant border patrols and smaller skirmishes along the Hungarian-Turkish frontier precisely favored such swift, mobile cavalry.
Their characteristic weapons are the sword, shield, lance, or hand bow and quiver.
The chancellor leads the king around.
The chancellor led the king forward and escorted him along the entire army.
An enemy column quietly advanced, revealed only by the tips of the spears.
Therefore, the leader of the Komoripár reasoned that these forces had come either to attack our camp or to surround us, which was indeed true.
Riding forward to the king, he ordered Ráskai Gáspár and the other two, who had been assigned as the king's bodyguards,
How to get them to leave, what plans do those people have, and if possible, force them to return.
A tremendous force of enemy troops, slowly descending from the hill opposite us, and the Turkish emperor himself was there.
Then they placed the helmet on the king's head, and at that very moment, the battle began.
The battle raged much more fiercely than our side had anticipated.
There are more of the enemy than of our own, and finally, they attacked with terrible force, causing the enemy to retreat.
Either overwhelmed by our assault, or so that he may lure us to the cannon's mouth.
András, the bold knight, is already at the king's side, urging him to turn the enemy's back.
The victory is ours, the advance is underway, and to support our forces who are driving back the destroyed enemy.
The rout was complete when, due to the overwhelming force of the firearms, the Hungarians, along with the rebels, repeatedly turned and fled.
Leaving behind approximately 80 of their cannons, their supply wagons, and their highly valuable carts, tents, and other equipment.
Even worse, their poor infantrymen were slaughtered by the advancing hordes, who were determined to conquer from all sides.
The Turks broke through our infantry's resistance. Most of us fell on the battlefield.
Sixteen barons, five bishops, and the two archbishops also died on the battlefield.
The greatest loss was the death of King Louis XVII and the uncertainty of the following days after the battle.
The Ottoman campaign did not end here. After the battle, the Ottomans executed around two thousand prisoners, then marched toward Buda, laying waste to the central regions of the country.
Under the beating of the national heart, we shall defend our homeland.
Happy is the servant, old great provider.
Defend with great hardship, thus calls the Better Hungary.
