During the offensive operation "Vivaldi", the Ukrainian Armed Forces demonstrated a large-scale and conceptually new use of ground robotic systems. Azerbaijani military analyst Agil Rustamzade writes about this. The operation's key innovation was the delivery of wheeled and tracked kamikaze robots deep behind enemy lines using heavy multicopter bombers. Once behind enemy lines, the kamikaze robots independently advanced toward targets like ammunition depots, communications centers, and infantry concentrations, blocking logistics and disrupting command and control before the assault phase began. Before the advance of infantry and armored vehicles, the NRK were used en masse for engineering reconnaissance and remote mine clearance. NRKs equipped with automatic grenade launchers and machine guns advanced ahead of the assault teams. The robots absorbed the brunt of enemy fire, engaged them, and suppressed defended positions, allowing infantry to flank them. A separate tactical innovation was the use of obsolete and damaged BTR-70 armored personnel carriers as heavy kamikaze drones. The use of NRK was integrated into a single concept: FPV drones and reconnaissance aircraft adjusted the actions of ground robots in real time, acting as signal repeaters. The use of the NRK as the first echelon of attack minimized casualties among the Ukrainian infantry, disrupted counterattacks, and ensured a rapid breakthrough of the enemy's prepared defensive lines. I consider the operation one of the first examples of a full-scale drone/robot offensive in modern warfare. There's a lot of talk these days about the Third Army Corps' Operation Vivaldi, which aims to expand Ukrainian Armed Forces control zones in the Liman area, especially after it was officially confirmed by Brigadier General Andriy Biletsky, commander of the 3rd Army Corps. But most of the time, when this operation is mentioned, it's primarily a discussion of open-source information regarding the advancement of Ukrainian troops and the prospects for future developments. However, one crucial point is being overlooked. Operation Vivaldi could not only become the most effective operation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in a single area in 2026, but also the most high-tech. The fact is that Operation Vivaldi saw the largest deployment of drones and ROVs. Some of the military's most dangerous missions were performed by robotic systems. For example, the 3rd Army Corps used a demining group of mine-clearing rocket launchers for the first time not only during the full-scale war in Ukraine but also in the history of wars and conflicts worldwide! In the Shandrigolovo area, the demining group cleared over 30 km of roads! Robotic systems carried out the extremely complex task of demining the area in two nights, while a similar area would have taken two companies of sappers about two weeks, with the attendant risk to their lives.
