What's happening today, if you're looking
for a family-friendly Halloween event,
the Berkeley Art Club is hosting a Halloween market this evening.
They'll have everything from music and food to tarot card readings,
and they're also helping to raise money for the dogs
and cats at Berkeley Humane Society.
Here to tell us about the event
is Berkeley Art Club organizer Janet Stevenson.
Thanks for being here this morning.
Hi, good morning. Thanks so much
for having me on to talk about the market.
Of course. So tell us about this Halloween market.
What can people expect when they go there,
and how did you all get the idea for this?
Well, basically, the market is happening today from 5
to 9 p.m. at Donkey and Goat Winery in West Berkeley.
The event is free to attend,
and we have an amazing lineup of 20-plus local artists,
two musical performances,
food vendors serving tamales and Korean fusion,
and poetry readings later on in the evening.
And as you said, the market is also a fundraiser for Berkeley Humane.
100% of our vendor fees are being donated
to help support our community's cats and dogs.
And several, I mean, most of our vendors are also donating
a portion of their proceeds from this event to Berkeley Humane.
So we're super excited about it.
How did the idea come about to partner with Berkeley Humane?
Is this a personal cause for you
or where did the inspiration for that come from?
Well, Berkeley is my hometown,
so I was born and raised here and I'm the organizer of the club.
So basically, I came up with the idea because I was looking
at local organizations and I really care about this one.
I actually got my first cats when I was four
or five years old from Berkeley Humane.
So I was just really excited to work with them.
And they've been so great to work with.
Tell us a little bit about the Berkeley Art Club. Who is it?
Who's involved? How did it get started? What do you all do?
So Berkeley Art Club, I started it this year in January.
I basically organize monthly events.
I do drink and draws, like the picture you're seeing here,
all around at different establishments in Berkeley.
I also organize figure drawing events,
and now we just started markets as well.
Where can people find out more about the Berkeley Art Club?
Because it sounds like a fantastic resource for all
those creatives out there who maybe want to get involved
with some sort of art project but don't know how to get started.
Is that the goal behind it?
It's just to build creative community.
The goal is to bring people together through art
and then give back to the community events like this.
So the best place to find out more information would
be out on our Instagram at Berkeley Art Club.
It's just one word, no dots or anything.
That's the best place to find out about us.
All right.
And the Halloween Market is another way people can find out about it
and learn about it and also help the Berkeley Humane Society.
We want to thank you so much for coming to talk to us about this.
Halloween Market is at Donkey and Goat Winery on 5th Street
in Berkeley between Gilman and Camellia Streets.
Admission is free, as you heard, and open to all ages.
Coming in costume is highly encouraged.
Janet Stevenson, thank you again
for telling us about all this, and good luck tonight.
Hope you have a great turnout.
Thank you so much. Thanks for having me on.
Of course.
