And there are new details in the deadly Bronx fire
that took the life of a young boy
and left four of his family members in serious condition.
So the blaze shines light on the alarming rise
of fires caused by lithium-ion batteries.
Jessica Formoso, what's going on this morning?
Good morning, Rosanna and Dan.
So that 10-year-old boy named Zion has died in this e-bike fire,
and his family remains in critical condition this morning.
So according to fire officials,
the fire started after a lithium-ion battery sparked
an intense fire inside the family's apartment, trapping them inside.
So it happened at NYCHA's
Patterson Houses in Mott Haven at around one
o'clock in the morning yesterday. The FDNY says
the family had an e-bike charging in the kitchen close
to the entrance of the apartment when the
battery burst into flames,
quickly spreading throughout the entire apartment. So according
to FDNY data, lithium ion batteries have caused more than 400 fires
in the city this year,
killing six, injuring more than 70.
Those numbers have jumped at an alarming rate since last year
when there were 292 fires,
51 people were injured, and one person killed.
Mayor Mamdani was joined by other officials
warning of the life-threatening dangers
of uncertified lithium-ion batteries.
Today is a horrific reminder of the danger
that lithium-ion battery fires can pose
and why it is so critically important
that New Yorkers store any micromobility devices outside
rather than inside their homes.
We know that lithium-ion battery fires can start quickly
and spread incredibly rapidly.
I want to make this exceptionally clear that these
lithium-ion battery fires can kill you.
They can kill your family. City officials say you should
not charge these batteries while you are sleeping.
Do not charge them in the entryway and do not use
uncertified batteries. Dan. All right, Jessica, thank you very much.
